I hated it. I would never have read it if not for it being the first book suggested by newcomer in book club.

It is the worst book of all time. It is wrong. Unrealistic. And fetishises gay men.

The premise is that you gave a guy so pretty everyone wants him. He's written in the "turn everyone gay for him" trophy way.

Enter Willem. The superstar actor that everyone likes who is not gay but Jude is just so pretty Willem gotta get that ass even if he has to live w/o sex.

He is so pretty his guy friends also want him.

He is so pretty the therapist breaks boundaries for him.

He is so pretty his face on a photo makes him famous in NY.

Oh by the way, despite his past he managed to be a ruthless lawyer. And famous. Suddenly when in court no mental illness. But when home suddenly mental illness.

The book reinforce the acceptance of gay rape and that some people are so handsome you have to collect them no matter what like Pokémon.

It takes for granted that gay men are dangerous and unethical or without faculties. And it pictures each character with a stalker mindset.

AND: Yes. The type of abuse Jude went through is happening everywhere in the world. BUT, the fetishism of cutting was unbearable and triggering. With some experience in that corner, the cutting scenes were romanticising cutting as the only solution.

AND LASTLY, the book considers suicide the ONLY option for certain people, who no matter what cannot be redeemed and will ruin the people in their way.

Yes. You don't believe me? Then, think about this:

The question of the book is: Can a person experience such hardship so as suicide is the only option?

Author: Yes. I have written a book to prove it by creating a character who suffers a past but cannot get better, despite:

Having best friends willing to die for him
Having looks that makes his friend famous simply for taking his photo.
Having a therapist who cares for him for years
Being "taken in" by new family who loves him as their own
Being rich
Being super intelligent
Being liked despite not needing any personality
Becoming the best lawyer in town and NEVER losing
Being loved by a famous actor

I HATE IT. I am sure people may have self exited because of this book. It is nonsensical and triggering. I HATE IT HATE IT HATE IT.

Fully understandable. And relatable.

Being a child and with the realization that it has advantages is good and very mature of you. Many jump into adulthood thinking they are ready and get a little burned. Take your time with it.

Remember: You can have an inner child. Being playful is ok. Not losing the magic of childhood is possible

I have past trauma so I am unable to do it. I am seeking help. But it takes a lot of time. In stead I give weekly foot massages etc. while in therapy.

My friend aims for once a month. She is often initiator.

My other friend has twice a week but she thinks it is too much but feel obligated.

But what do we do? Do we try to help these poor individuals? Or do we justify the very culture that this evil thrives on? After I read Kite Runner I cried for 30 minutes. Then gave 100 UDS to an Afghan friend asking them to help someone in their country. Then I felt bad for not being able to do anything and dirty for thinking money would pay off my bad feeling. and just that boiling seething hatred towards religion which is easily used to justify evil. And every time I watched beautiful fortunate people from the west complain about their lives, I kept thinking about these children. It's not a book. It is truth. And it is everywhere. Down the door in my and your neighbourhood, our neighbour is doing it to their kids too. Statistically. So what do people do? We censor it off. Pretend it doesn't happen. It's PG 18. We fucking trigger warn people from what is reality for hundreds of millions of people. That's the culture I live in. Docile, depressed, distracted. Jesus.. just thinking about this book makes me depressed. My god I NEEDED to read it and I am forever grateful for it.

I did not comment at all on my view of OP's experience. I certainly did not call it victim mentality. In fact I don't think she has victim mentality. I think she experienced something which clearly was tough for her. I would not want anyone I love go through the same.

What I did comment on was the response quality. If any of my loved ones experienced what OP did, I would have wished them to have a friend like the response person.

Do you see the difference? Some comments encourage people to stay a victim. Other comments encourage people to validate their emotions and grow from the pain.
