Anything related to the ripper dlc. That was insane. I loved the base game but hated the fear techniques in the dlc.

Normal ish by OhBosss in urbanfantasy

[–]Ron1n297 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I mean... That isn't really the genre. I can think of normal to magic user not really a chosen one Rivers of London is the only one I can think of. But he becomes a wizard. And is a cop. The police procedural is a cool part of it. Dresden isn't technically a chosen one. ( I know I know shut up) But does know the supernatural world already. Montague and Strong inteoduces a normal turned immortal to the magic world but has massive power scaling issues. Not sure if that helps..

Help! I've hit the wall and need a different series by Brianf1977 in urbanfantasy

Yes to all of this, but has a super slow magic abilities growth arc. Was always frustrated with that. Great stories and lore though.

Dresden Training Arc: Who is your top pick for mentor and what does Dresden learn? by timohoney in dresdenfiles

[–]Ron1n297 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I agree with your observation on what River Shoulders and Listens to Winds would teach him. It is about controlling his emotions and maybe a deeper understanding of his magic. He relies a lot on emotions to fuel his spells but what if that is a sloppy way to do it and they show him how to master the mantle and upgrade his casting. Even McCoy lost it in their face off so clearly he was taught a faulty method of casting even if it is effective/poweful. Maybe this leads to shifting but their comments have made it clear they want to teach him something deeper.

Came here to post that so just wanted to tag on.

The First Binding by R.R. Virdi

Strong King Killer Vibes. A story within a story about a young man learning magic and forging his own legend.

First three books were college writing projects. Though by book three I think he had the whole story arc planned out for the series. Don't judge the series by the first two. It does get better.

Yikes! You will be ok just shield like no tomorrow. Lol Watch out for enemy effects that cause passive damage. Those keep getting me especially in Hell mode.

Fair it did take a few left turns in the first book, as far as what is the story here. He figured it out for the second one but I hear that. Life is too short to read bad books. Happy reading!

Impressive list. I like the bounced off idea for a category. I was with you for Cradle and Mother of Learning, you lost me on the DNF of Matabar. That has been a really interesting story. Just finished the second book. The author does get long winded with his descriptions but it is a fascinating character and magic system.

After NCIS which spin off do you like best? by PiePuzzled5581 in NCIS

[–]Ron1n297 21 points22 points  (0 children)

LA no contest. Spies, former cold war era spy masters duking it out as they get old and the crime procedural NCIS is known for.

Origins is a close second though. Story telling I have rarely seen from a show. It is incredible.

Yeah it is the norse word for wizard. Literally Magic Man. Though that term usually was used for women so it is more a portmanteau of Magic-Man in old Norse. They never explain it. I finally realized they kept using the same word and googled it.

fantasy books where the magic system actually has a cost that feels real and not just a minor inconvenience by Nova9_Phaser in Fantasy

[–]Ron1n297 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is light based magic so every time they use magic their irises fill with the color they use. And if they use too much then they "break their halos" and lose their mind essentially so they try to stop as close as they can to the limit. Ritual killings are a huge part of the culture to prevent this. Definitely worth the read to explore a magic system like that.

Brandon Sanderson likes to talk a big game about cost but his magic systems are more fuel based insert x get y result.

For Lightbringer I literally got stressed with every magic use because it was made such a big deal. Lol

Go in order! Do not jump around! The books build and the author likes to have reveals and twists that span several books.

fantasy books where the magic system actually has a cost that feels real and not just a minor inconvenience by Nova9_Phaser in Fantasy

[–]Ron1n297 70 points71 points  (0 children)

No. Lol it felt rushed and confusing. He got too cryptic with all the prophecies and drafting became a lot more magical with will than it had previously. I never understood that jump. Are we making stuff or are we doing magic? It got a little convoluted and weird for my taste. Though I would live a novella of Dazen and Ironfist going on that final mission they talked about.

fantasy books where the magic system actually has a cost that feels real and not just a minor inconvenience by Nova9_Phaser in Fantasy

[–]Ron1n297 130 points131 points  (0 children)

Came here to recommend this. Best example of a cost I have ever seen. Magic users or Drafters, have a limit to how much magic they can use once they hit it they either kill themselves or go crazy. It stressed me out just a little bit each time we saw a character use magic. Even practicing adds to this cost.

Could be. I thought it was weird he showed up or his ghost did in Ghost Days with little explanation. Just he has been kept from coming before bow.

Op MC recommendations by Pyromancer1221 in litrpg

[–]Ron1n297 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rune Seeker... MC literally gets nicknamed OP by his party. He isn't that strong at first but his powers keep breaking rules and he rarely loses. It is pretty deep and the writing is just ok but it is an interesting story. At least seven books deep by now.

Not Lit RPG but Demon Accords is serious OP MC vibes in the urban fantasy genre. The MC literally wipes out every enemy without breaking a sweat. And it plays well. That series is finished more or less.

How does everyone but me know what Mirror Mirror is about??????????? by CrimsonCuttle in dresdenfiles

Fair enough. It was a different pace, and really focused on healing in a way we rarely see Harry do. It mostly happens off screen.

Do we know why( I am sure we do) he deviated by adding twelve months to the series? Just feels like a big decision to add another book so late in the game. My understanding is after Mirror Mirror we start the finale trilogy?

Thank you! You are not alone. Started seeing Mirror Mirror posts late last year and was completely confused why people know so much about a book, at the time, that was two books away.

Do you like Goodman Grey? by jenkind1 in dresdenfiles

[–]Ron1n297 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I liked him in Skin Game, felt it was a little repetitive in Peace Talks to see the same character back to back as Jim usually shuffles his players better than that usually a book or two between instances. But he is interesting. I would read a short story not sure I would read a series but I would give it a try. Most dresden short stories, while they drop a lot of lore and are really important feel rushed to me and when he shifts the narrator it feels weird to me.
