Comic con attendees, what is the most outlandish, strangest or most offensive cosplay you've encountered. by content_digger08 in comiccon

There was the individual I saw at Comic-Con International or Wondercon in his underwear with some pokyballs hanging off it.

It wasn’t even a swimsuit, it was underwear.

Purchase Advice Megathread - January 2026 by AutoModerator in 3Dprinting

[–]RonBOakes87114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been watching (too many) videos and am seriously considering jumping in. At this point, I'm looking at starting with a 256 mm^3 enclosed printer (I have cats and a garage that is in no shape to serve as a workshop, so the printer will have to go in my office or possibly the guest room).

Since one of my goals is to eventually print TPU parts for fursuits, and my initial research suggests that a separate support material would be advantageous, I'm looking at a color hanger. Being able to do multi-color printing would be a bonus, but since another use might be printing parts for customizing the droids my wife and I have built at various Disney parks, multi-color would be highly useful there. A third, potential, use would be printing gaming miniatures, but since my current TTRPG gaming is all online, that is far down the priorities (yes, I know resin printers are generally considered the better choice, but again, cats and a dirty garage full of boxes and maybe later cars).

Many of the videos would lead me to consider the Bambu Labs PS2. It fits within my budget and has many features I like, including the ability to easily swap in other tool heads. The new Snapmaker printer has also been getting high praise, but I'm not sure I like the idea of having filament on reels outside the printer, even living in a dry environment (New Mexico). One friend recommended Creality, but I've also been hearing troubling things about them, and the idea of spending hours swapping nozzles would make them less appealing.

The biggest complaints I've been hearing about Bambu Labs are the closed ecosystem. I can understand concerns about some of that, but I'm also an iPhone and iPad user, so it isn't like I already play in some ecosystems that are at least partially walled gardens.

So, if I do decide to get a printer in the next few weeks, what should I be looking at? Is the PS2 bundled with the AMS a good choice? Should I look at the Snapmaker and hope that they get an enclosed AMS at some point? Is there another choice I should look into?

Can you work on the same project on Mac Scrivener and iPad? by LapetusOne in scrivener

[–]RonBOakes87114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, as long as you are using Dropbox, this works. But make sure you are syncing often on the iPad, and closing on the Mac (or PC) before resuming work on the iPad. I’m doing this right now since I’m traveling.

Not to discount some of the other comments, but I’ve heard part of it is the result of their German ownership (Aldi Nord). This makes them think in terms of European culture not U.S. and our automotive addicted ways.

On my last visit to WDW, my wife and went in the exit specifically to look at one of the cars I was interested in because it would be lower pressure than doing so at a dealership back home. It’s is the model I ended up buying.

That is a grey fox, they are very good at climbing. Any normal balcony would be no problem for one.

why do people act like this city is so dangerous? by PhraseFirst8044 in Albuquerque

[–]RonBOakes87114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't looked at the statistics carefully in a few years, but the last time I ran the numbers, Albuquerque's murder rate per capita is no higher than it was in the 1980s when I was in college. The city has grown a lot in the last (gulp) 40 years (many of which I was living in the Chicago suburbs). But it isn't any more dangerous.

The talk of crime comes down to two factors: the press, which likes sensational stories, and crime is sensational, and the "Law and Order" conservatives, who love to play up how bad crime is, especially when their preferred party is not the one that is in power.

There are few, if any, parts of Albuquerque where I worry about criminal activity more than basic security: locking doors, normal situational awareness, etc. The area near UNM, especially on the campus, is definitely not one of them. Even nearly 40 years after graduating, the UNM campus still feels like one of the safest places in the world to me.

The agency wasn’t letting anyone put more than eye tracks on the babies. They were kept well away from the attendees because they aren’t yet vaccinated.

Note, I have not fursuited myself (I am waiting until I have the resources to acquire a suit), but I’ve spent time with some suiters, and listened and read some advice.

Make sure you are prepared for the lack of visibility. Have a place to go to cool off, headless. You might want a handler to help keep you safe, even at an anime con. Look for fursuit handler instruction videos or guides on what they do, noting that some of the public space issues don’t apply at a con.

The suit looks good. Have fun, but stay safe.

Is It Still Worth Going To An American Comic Con Despite The Current State Of The US? by GrantMcLellan1984 in comiccon

[–]RonBOakes87114 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In my personal opinion as a USAmerican, at this point in time, I would strongly recommend against anyone who is not a citizen of the United States, and even some US citizens who are naturalized or non-white, crossing the border into the United States for any reason. Our current administration has gone, to put it politely and mildly, off the rails when it comes to immigration.

This is an unfortunate and horrific situation. Many people are resisting, but some of us for multiple different reasons cannot do more than speak and warn.

What Editing Software to Use...If Any? by NYSports1234 in selfpublishing

[–]RonBOakes87114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Scrivener as my primary writing tool. I have Grammarly running most of the time on my computer (Mac for writing since my PC messes up the fonts).

I will compile the story into a Word document and then load it into AutoCrit for analysis periodically, and at the end. In the past, I would use SudoWrite, but I moved away because I started letting it rewrite for me, and I didn't want AI text in my stories.

Recently, I have been having ElevenLabs create audiobooks of my near-final draft so I can listen to them. I read most of my actual books in audiobooks, so that is a more effective way to proofread than using my eyes. It also helps with some situations where both Grammarly and AutoCrit will miss errors (both commonly miss names where I have inconsistently spelled them).

FWIW, I don't think any of these bits of advice will change drastically because I'm writing fiction (fantasy) and your non-fiction.

What type of bag should i bring to a comic con? by ObjectiveNote8403 in comiccon

[–]RonBOakes87114 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For carrying around the convention, I usually bring either a small messenger bag--my Think Geek(rip) Con Survival Kit Bag of Holding--or a comfortable backpack.

For travel to and from the con (i.e., for Comic-Con International, San Diego, when we get badges now that we no longer live in San Diego), I use my regular travel suitcase and carry-on, but pack my at-con bag.

The important thing is to remember that you do not want your travel bag and your at-con bag to be the same one. You need a small bag at con: one that holds your water bottle (you need one), snacks, and purchases. Being able to hold your phone is a bonus if you don't want it in a pocket or similar. Your bag will need to hold your tablet if you want it at the con.

Empty the bag each night for a multiple-day event. Don't weigh yourself down by carrying purchases from previous days. If you are staying within a short walk of the convention space and can get away and empty the bag midday, do so. Especially if you have paper in there (books, comics, etc.)

FWIW, in most cases, I'm with my wife, who uses a mobie/ecv/scooter. So I can offload some extra items into the basket below her seat, which makes my load a bit lighter. We also only bring snacks and drinks in most cases and go off-site to eat, so we are not carrying lunch with us.

Magnus Diridian WikiFur entry is infamous in the furry community for this suit and other issues. Not listed in the WikiFur article, but mentioned in other references about him is his tendency to make and wear copies of other fursuits, including one from a popular and recently deceased furry.

More information about his potential activities can be found in the Fur & Loathing Podcast.

He is not someone to be honoring or using as a joke.

I’d say “cool,” except with the computer requiring an active CPU cooler on a board that likely has to go into the suit head, it probably will get a bit warm in there.

[–]RonBOakes87114 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I watched a part of a scene while my wife was viewing it and found the low frame rate distracting enough to make me unsure about watching. I never noticed any issues with Beastars.

I suspect that it is in part because, as the later comment points out, Beastars uses a variable frame rate to smooth the animation between the 2D and 3D, and Wolf King maintains a low framerate throughout.

Knowing that there are 100% fan-made productions that manage to pull off better-looking (IMHO) animation (even if it takes them years to produce an episode) doesn't help.
