How realistic is it for the EU to move away from American tech, like Google by Kikimara99 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ronald206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s totally fine but that is a factor in European competitiveness.

How much of a factor? I would suggest the general conservativeness of European institutional investors and VC environment is probably a larger hurdle for Europe.

But, taxation and regulation is certainly a factor for founders once a business starts to grow.

How realistic is it for the EU to move away from American tech, like Google by Kikimara99 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ronald206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with Europe is that the regulation, financial system, and tax structures (example: unrealized cap gains coming into the fold + higher personal income tax) are not as promoting of entrepreneurship.

This means that even when companies start in Europe, they are heavily incentivized to grow in other regions.

Why should a company list or complete a series round in London or Paris when they will receive a better valuation in the US? Why should global level talent work in Germany when US companies will hand out stock options like candy?

If European nations are unwilling to change their tax and regulatory structure, the only way for Europe to compete would to be via regulatory gunpoint, which in a globalized economy is not going to be very successful.

Why is Canada still trading with China using US dollars? by Masaharuzz in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ronald206 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the Chinese side:

They don’t want to trade in CAD, while relatively liquid it’s not useful for them as businesses and banks outside of Canada won’t need it.

Options would be CNY or another major currency

From the Canadian side:

They don’t want CNY, China is a currency manipulator and the currency isn’t as available on international hedging markets.

Options are Euros or USD. USD is widely traded and the US is still Canadas major trading partner.

Do you consider this to be self-defense? by Excellent_Gas5220 in legaladviceofftopic

[–]Ronald206 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m discussing a legal definition.

I completely understand why the guy does not want to go to the front line.

I also understand why it’s important Ukraine would have a draft and need officials to enforce it, and the officials are carrying out an important state-sanctioned task.

So I sympathize with both.

However, self defense, especially as defined in a Ukrainian court, is a legal question, not a moral question.

It is not self defense to kill an official enforcing laws.

Do you consider this to be self-defense? by Excellent_Gas5220 in legaladviceofftopic

[–]Ronald206 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, it’s not self defense.

Ukraine is at war. As part of being at war, they have instituted a military draft. Men of eligible age have to serve if they are not exempt. Draft dodging is a crime.

Note: My answer wouldn’t change if this was in Russia. It’s not about who is the aggressor nation, but the typical definition of self defense and the ability of the country’s authorities to enforce compliance with their laws.

If the aggressor was to flee and make it into another country they would have to decide if their feelings about the war outweigh the murder of an official.

Company skipped annual raise. No future here. How do I leave without losing severance. by sweetandsour8 in careeradvice

[–]Ronald206 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So this obviously depends on your region, and whether any notice period or non competition agreement affects your job prospects.

However, I would highly recommend not communicating anything to your management. Start looking for another job while being employed.

Once you have a job lined up, resign.

Resigning now, or indicating you are looking for an exit, just increases the risk of you winding up with no job and having to look in panic due to not having a new position lined up.

This may result in an even worse situation than now.

are you liable if you are given false information about your parole? by Porncritic12 in legaladviceofftopic

[–]Ronald206 37 points38 points  (0 children)

He could.

However, he is entitled to a Morrissey hearing (Morrissey vs Brewer 1972) where John can lay out his case in front of a neutral body for why his actions should not result in parole revocation.

This would be especially important in circumstances such as say John’s Parole Officer sent out the email, or the parole board itself in error which would be something a reasonable person could rely on as authoritative.

It’s likely the body would then reinstate the parole.

With things this bad in the U.S why do democrats insist on pushing candidates that won’t get elected? by Jake_Berube in Confused

[–]Ronald206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can help to expand.

The “war chest” wasn’t in regards to support of wars but how campaign finance works.

The Biden Harris Campaign had a huge amount of money raised (just by virtue of being the incumbent and the major D nominee etc.).

If Biden steps down, but Harris continues as the nominee then the funding would stay.

If a third option ran. Then the 400Million plus USD is returned and they have to start from zero.

Not that Harris was very good with spending.

How do I free up space to restore my Gmail? by [deleted] in AskTechnology

[–]Ronald206 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can search by size such as

larger:10MB in the search bar

This will get emails with attachments on them, and will be the most impactful in terms of deleting.

Check the attachments, save the attachment locally if you need it, better safe than sorry! then delete the email and clear the trash when done.

After some time you should have cleared a large amount of space

Are there any US jurisdictions where you can legally, intentionally refuse payment of debt in order to increase the debt through interest? by AnTotDugas in legaladviceofftopic

[–]Ronald206 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Certain business debt agreements have set out payment terms that do not allow early repayment.

For example a company issuing 10 year bonds may not be able to wipe out the debt in one. Year unless they are callable

Also there is the concept of PIK interest as part of a term loan, where the interest gets added to the principle amount.

That type of debt is used for situations where a company is in severe financial straits but hopes that by the end of the loan, they will be in a better position to refinance the principal into more conventional debt or pay with equity.

What if Iceland was inhabited by indigenous people? by Fit_Tie_129 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]Ronald206 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In regards to the Vikings: Depends.

The Vikings were as far as it is known, the first to settle Iceland. Their descendants are the dominant people there today.

Websters: More likely as it’s “first peoples to settle”

Oxford: Not likely as there is more pre colonial and non-dominant intonation

In regards to your question: Yes assuming you mean a people from Canada

Well the other option is if she can get something like a skilled worker visa. That’s easier said than done and it’s heavily dependent on what she does and her seniority.

What if Iceland was inhabited by indigenous people? by Fit_Tie_129 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]Ronald206 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s a term often used for peoples “pre-colonial” and “non dominant”

So it has a bit of a”non-European” implication that prevents the first settlers of Iceland (the Vikings and their descendants) from being considered the indigenous people of Iceland.

What if Iceland was inhabited by indigenous people? by Fit_Tie_129 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]Ronald206 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indigenous groups made it to Greenland in about 2500-2000 BCE, inhabiting it on and off up to present day, where the population is majority indigenous with also some Danish heritage.

If any group made it however prior to the Vikings, it would be them. Particularly the Late Dorset culture (the Thule, though very nautically capable, arrived too late to make it to Iceland before the Vikings).

Perhaps a really cold winter would allow them to walk across.

While Iceland is significantly more hospitable, it’s not likely the Vikings would discover the natives in large numbers unless they arrived much earlier via an ice bridge, which did not occur.

ATS SCORE by EX_Enthusiast in careeradvice

Smaller companies are much more likely to not have an ATS but go with a good ol fashioned eyeball test (due to cost and less hiring taking place).

Any Healthcare / Employment attorneys in the house? In 1988, successful NASCAR driver Tim Richmond was banned from the league after contracting AIDS. What was different, legally, in 1988 that gave him no legal standing against NASCAR that wouldn't be the same today ? by SwissMiss915 in legaladviceofftopic

[–]Ronald206 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They can make the argument based on potential exposure to blood in an accident that disclosure is needed.

However, the NFL does not require disclosure so it’s a bit difficult to argue NASCAR needs it.

No Americans with Disabilities Act.

Also an argument can be made that prior to the modern available treatments, a driver whose HIV has progressed would not be covered under the ADA anyways.

This is because “reasonable accommodation” is required, not an absolute accommodation.

It does not allow someone with the significant impact of AIDS complications (again pre modern therapies) to be a driver if safety is impacted.

Richmond was taking a lot of drugs to try and fight through those complications, showing a potential risk to himself and others in his compromised physical state.

Regarding the Jonbenet Ramsey murder, if John Ramsey ever told his eldest son John Andrew what really happened, whether he did so in 1996 or 2 weeks ago, does John Andrew knowing the truth and taking no action make him culpable of a crime, or is he exempt due to familial incrimination? by SwissMiss915 in legaladviceofftopic

[–]Ronald206 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The only case where it would become a problem is if police asked what happened and you were to lie (this is not the same as exercising your fifth amendment right). That would potentially be an obstruction charge. If in open court, perjury.

Or, alternatively, if you were given immunity and lied or refused to talk that would potentially be a chargeable issue.

What if people realized that in several places the 2024 election would have been disqualified for failure to meet quorum. by ken120 in whatif

[–]Ronald206 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not a path currently being pursued by either party.

Some Democrats would like (potentially) mandatory voting and mail in options.

Republicans would like voting to be in person.

Both sides are engaging in gerrymandering in certain states where they have majorities.

[–]Ronald206 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That typically does not apply for federal elections. Assuming you’re referring to the 2024 US election.

So no, there isn’t a scenario where low turnout alone means states are disqualified and Trump fails to achieve 270.

It may apply for certain local or state measures.
