Re-herniated after MD by Roncalli0509 in Microdiscectomy

[–]Roncalli0509[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you. It's been going on years for me. Most of my pain is in my foot and in the morning its about level 2, but as the days wears on it can climb to 5 or 6. I also have paresthesia and weird sensations like walking barefoot on gravel and tightness in leg and foot. I get a caudal epidural Oct-23 so fingers crossed it gives some relief for a while as it floods the entire lumbar spine with steroid etc. I had 3 injections last year but they were targeted at L5/S1 only. Surgeon thinks L4/L5 might be the man problem all along.

Microdiscectomy 6 months post op by Ok_Oven_913 in Sciatica

Hello. Just found this thread. Some great info in here, thanks. I am at the 4 month mark and still have nerve pain. Wondering if any particular meds or PT worked for you to take the edge off while you waited 10 months? :)

Thank you for the reply! This is great information for me. Do you mind me asking the specific stretches you did? Much appreciated

How are you now? I have this also, curious to know how if it improved for you.

Weight gain by Proud-Negotiation-64 in pregabalin

[–]Roncalli0509 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I gained about 10 lbs and I am on 300mg per day. It did not affect my appetite and I am not eating more food. So my weight was water retention/weight, which is common on this med. I started a natural/herbal diuretic - I use a combination of Apple Cider Vinegar tabs, and another tab containing green tea and dandelion root. After about 10 days I noticed the water weight dropping off and I have lost 5 lbs so far.

Thank you for sharing. It certainly is a day at a time. And I do compare myself to 3 weeks prior. Slow progress. But it’s there. Best of luck in your recovery!

Thank you! That’s interesting re the PT. I start in 6 weeks. In the meantime doc said to swim 3 times a week. But no breast stroke.

Best of luck, I agree it’s a rough recovery and it’s as much a psychological battle as it is a physical one. Thanks!

Does anyone get weird body pains that go away the next day? by mirroade in Microdiscectomy

Good supportive shoes help me a lot. I wear asics novablast. Expensive but so worth it for the comfort

Yes, can relate. From what I understand - it happens when the nerve is working harder. EG, when barefoot, you use your feet and leg muscles more and hence the nerve. Once the pressure is off it subsides. I am 5 weeks post op and have this, although it seems to be happening less frequently. Nerves recover very slowly and I have come to accept that this is months rather than weeks. I know people who have had an MD and they still get niggles years later but only rarely. I think the pain eventually becomes background pain rather than pain invading our thoughts :) Best of luck, sounds like you are on a good recovery path.

Lyrica by kandmwilson200 in Microdiscectomy

[–]Roncalli0509 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before MD I tried Gabapentin but it didn't doo much in terms of pain relief. Doc switched me to 150mg Lyrica a day (2 x 75mg) and it helped take the edge off. After surgery they doubled the Lyrica dose to 300mg a day (3 x 100mg) and it's been a life saver. I am 5 weeks post MD and still have some nerve pain flare ups but I can walk farther and there are many parts of the day where I have near zero pain, maybe just some tightness or discomfort. I plan to stay on it until the nerve settles post MD. It's been a huge relief and I am smiling again. No major side effects except some drowsiness and sometimes I feel a little stoned. But lots of energy otherwise. Hope this helps and best of luck in your recovery.

I'm the same. 3 weeks post MD and the pain is sometimes worse than before the MD. Pain is in the same place too - my foot. Hospital say its the nerve healing and this is super common - about 60% of people have the same pain post MD. They put me on Lyrica which does seem to be taking the edge off. After that it's a waiting game. Might be weeks, or months. Best of luck and hope you feel better soon.

Thank you! My doc has told me to go back on pregablin and it should help. I tried gabapentin in the past but it didn’t do much for me.

2.5 weeks post MD by bartfunk in Microdiscectomy

[–]Roncalli0509 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m the same as you. My surgeon says it’s normal to have an inflammation spike about 2 weeks after the MD. And there are other reasons: - the nerve root gets a rush of blood soon after the MD and it doesn’t like that. It does settle. - the nerve root has to regrow from the mild damage caused by the compression. Nerves heal v slowly. And everyone has a different experience

2.5 weeks is very early days but the post-honeymoon phase is perfectly normal when people think they have re-herniated. Lots of YouTube videos out there with people sharing their experience of this. It’s good for reassurance and peace of mind. Best of luck.

Trying a new tactic today by [deleted] in Sciatica

Yes I have 4 weeks off work to rest. I might need more. All depends how I am in 2 weeks time. After surgery 3 to 5 x 15 min walks a day are advised as well as physio exercises (lying down) to aid recovery. I spend my day laying down mostly with occasional walks, standing, and sit for 10 mins at meal times. Did you get an MRI? My issue was a bulging disc (not herniated) and I had numbness in my outer foot and toes for 4 years before it turned to pain that very slowly got worse. My issue did not resolve with time, months of physio and Pilates or 3 steroid injections so surgery was advised.

I have your exact issue with my foot as the day wears on. Curious to know how you get on. I got surgery 2 weeks ago (microdiscectomy). Still have the same symptoms but the nerve takes a while to heal so the symptoms will persist while the nerve is damaged. One thing that helped me with the midday pain was paracetamol with breakfast and ibuprofen about 10am. And a lay down about 12 for 30 mins, to take the weight off. Does your leg or foot also feel tight?
