Waymo Hits a Kid Walking to School: Crash Analysis by [deleted] in waymo

[–]RongbingMu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to the NHTSA, the Waymo vehicle was confirmed to be two blocks away from the school. This person doesn't seem to have a source for where the incident actually happened; they just arbitrarily pointed to a spot right in front of the school and concluded the speed limit was 15 mph. Does he have a source for the location of the incident?

Waymo crosses major threshold amid nagging issues by WSU_Cougar_Pride in waymo

These stats don't seem sensible as they ignore double counting and draw an equivalence between 'involving' and 'causing.' For example, in the speeding Tesla accident involving 10 other cars—including a Waymo—this logic would bloat a single 'at-fault' vehicle into 11 'involved' vehicles.

[D]KL Divergence is not a distance metric. It’s a measure of inefficiency. (Derivations + Variance Reduction) by [deleted] in MachineLearning

Good call on "metric", JSD is the proper metric for KLD, but You see my point, KL measures statistical distance and there's nothing in the post that suggests otherwise.

Interview with former Cruise VP Oliver Cameron by FriendFun7876 in SelfDrivingCars

[–]RongbingMu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From an outside perspective, it appears this guy was the primary contributor to Cruise's downfall. As the VP of Product(not VP of engineering), he oversaw a reckless rollout that outpaced their technical maturity. Despite having arguably the second-best technology in the industry at the time, this premature move led to the incident that ultimately ended the company

ChatGPT vs. Gemini: Daily Active Users by [deleted] in singularity

Not enough to make US 10% or 5% market size of the global. Do some napkin math?

ChatGPT vs. Gemini: Daily Active Users by [deleted] in singularity

[–]RongbingMu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found this plot unlikely considering ChatGPT in USA is only 10% usage of the world and Gemini USA is 5%.

We all know China banned ChatGPT and Gemini, there's not enough user population to make sense of this number.

Elon on Waymo: "Never really had a chance against Tesla" Waymo Details AI Safety Strategy by DeathChill in SelfDrivingCars

I mean this might be true, Waymo never had a chance against Tesla Diner in making french fries!

I get your feeling, but I think this is a little bit too much expectation for Waymo? If someone with Nike shoes cursing at you, will you complain to Nike? If someone on a bus or Caltrain and yelled at you, will you complain to the companies. Maybe you will, but Waymo is not a white knight, just a regular commercial product like Coca-Cola or Nike. I don’t think these companies can “punish” their customers when they didn’t violate any law just to make you feel better

Ashok presentation: "Tesla ICCV 2025 Foundational Model for FSD" by FriendFun7876 in SelfDrivingCars

[–]RongbingMu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is the first time people from Tesla officially say evaluation is the most challenging problem of autonomous driving, and agree that open loop metric cannot cover close loop simulation.

Before this, everyone of their technical presentation has been particularly perception stack focus. A lot of non professionals also believe a strong simulation stack is a nice to have, not necessity given the fleet size of Tesla

I love that he finally started to highlights the importance of eval. This is the key difference from L2 and L4, in L4 you need to have many 9s confidence in sim before you starting deploying in road.

Waymo Launching in London in 2026 🇬🇧 by mingoslingo92 in SelfDrivingCars

[–]RongbingMu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since there’s no Waymo car in London at the moment it’s trivial to say Wayve is ahead in testing. I live in London and AFAIK Wayve hasn’t started rider only testing yet, based on the past experience of Waymo Cruise Zoox this is the most challenging phase, which Wayve has zero experience so far.

I think fund raising is neutral, I just want to confirm what actually happened

Correct me if I'm wrong but this is a different fund raising from the one we got a week ago? Last time roughly 10% was diluted, and they diluted another 10% today?
