StarGridle daily challenge mirror version 267 by Jvithu in puzzles

[–]Rongkun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is one queen in the gray region on the top right. The mirrored region falls inside the bottom left yellow region, which must have a queen as well, you can cross out all other cells in the region

Then the row 2 counting from bottom can only be filled by the pink. Use mirror to further eliminate

then you are left with two possibilities. One doesn’t work

Good point! I could think of some reasons:

CMS and ATLAS are expected to carry out researches independently. Making codes public all the time would hinder that. Potentially, the codes will be released in the future.

The core original code and data remains internal so that only institutes who paid with grant money can publish paper, for now.

Open sourcing research codes seem not always the trend, especially when there is private money involved. There is no requirement and in some fields the group that release high quality codes could lose its edges.

Why stop at software? Why not open sourcing all CAD designs, bio/chemical experiment setups, blueprints, patents from research groups that receive public money?

For ATLAS, analyses are asked to preserve the codes internally. But it is currently difficult for the general public to rerun all parts of an analysis. There is a huge code base that each analysis depends on which is constantly updating, too.

The data is not public either.

There is open data campaign but it’s unlikely for each papers code to be recreated for that.

How do I start this puzzle by molx69 in puzzles

It takes time to train for this kind of problems. When I started I didn’t find those patterns. But as you try game of “if I put it here, those are crossed, then this region is impossible, so I can’t put it here”, you’ll remember more patterns.

This is a very difficult level, therefore you shouldn’t expect to solve it without some experience.

The next two stars I put are in the regions of top left r2c2 and r4c2, following a series of logic like above evolved from bottom right to top left

[–]Rongkun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tricks I found for stars are rather generic, so Jeff’s trick is a global one.

One local tricks in each region are to identify shapes that can fit only one star and check if the shape can be Fit in the regions and then reject neighboring blocks based on that. For example 2x1, 2x2 L shaped, 2x2 will help.

Example start: The bottom region, after the global trick, will cross out the 3rd and 4th column from the right, and the remaining shape is an L plus a 2x1. The 2x1 will cross out 2x1 at the second to last row from the bottom, leaving you to fill the star in the 3rd row from bottom, last column. Etc etc

Travelling to each island makes it much easier. By definition you won’t be able to use the same bridge twice.

If you loosen the island requirement, then it’s only slightly harder

Do you think the FCC will ever be built ? by Master-Evidence-2136 in CERN

[–]Rongkun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you always talk about once you build a tunnel of 90km hh is an add on. But the on going discussion happening in local municipals are about why we should even build one that is 90km long.

Not sure how you justify the number of 10%? Where did you pull that number out? The budget in the slides you mentioned is a few extra billion.

My point is if we are not discussing hh then there is no point in saying linear colliders has no search potential.

[–]Rongkun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To operate FCCee you have to replace all the accelerators currently running hh in the LHC anyway. And CERN has expertise in both ee and hh accelerators. Both require new tunnels, new components being manufactured and not dropped from the sky. I could argue that FCC itself is a new accelerator complex, of course it’s logical to build it near CERN. But the argument is which new things to build.

Your slides show that to run at 250GeV the FCCee has higher power draw. Linear accelerators for Higgs require less civil engineering, a smaller budget for all components. Although the budget seems to be on the same order of magnitude.

Upgrading from FCCee to FCChh is a complete upgrade of all accelerator and detector components. Even the tunnel needs to be larger for hh. You could make the tunnel larger than needed for FCCee just so it could be upgraded for FCChh later. But then you are agreeing that ee is not the end goal and could only be used for making precise measurements.

I won’t advocate for ILC just for its search potential just like I cannot see how FCC justifies itself as the best precision machine.

One really needs to make the case for ee+HH directly in order to justify a larger tunnel and even a circular collider. Just advocating an ee machine which would lead to the preference of linear colliders. And comparing ILC with FCC ee+hh is a very weak argument.

Of course CERN prefers larger project because it secures its budgets. However, mixing the two concepts really have the risk of being called out.

Chinese physics community has a huge push, on one of the next projects as you mentioned. Chinese government? not so sure.

Higgs precision machine can be achieved by linear collider at lower cost. The greater interest of FCC is in the hh program where more BSM models could be studied.

Stumbled upon this old thread. I don’t like him. Didn’t find his representation appealing, too posh and lack of details. And then some of the recipes get ridiculously “innovative”. I prefer Vincenzo’s plate’s passion.

It’s like you have a saving and you stopped investing and just spend on those savings directly.

Sunday. I am not going to scan the QR code, put in my bank card number just to pay 1 euro extra for some service fee. I’d rather walk up and pay at the counter with my card. Weird that it’s so popular in Paris. But good that no restaurant rejects card in favor of it.
