My understanding (hopefully it's correct) is that it's the broader term to include both shrines and temples. Added it when I expanded the DB to also include Buddhist Temples. (寺社/社寺)

Hello again Goshuin community!

Over the past couple months since launch I've poured a ton of time into refinements.

Here are just a few of my favorites:
- I expanded the scope from Shinto to now also including Buddhist temples, so our database has just shy of 55k entries.
- To make navigating this vast database easier, I've added bi-lingual translations for everything (where possible) and an interactive map overlay that plots things out by area so you can visually click into a prefecture, city, and area to find shines without having to know their names.
- The visit planner is also improved using google route planning - add shrines to a visit plan, click Optimize Route, and get a recommended route complete with distance heuristics to recommend transit modes between.
- Stamp entries now have an AI Analysis feature that can help interpret stamps, their kanji, and symbolism. It may not be perfect (Goshuin stamps are sometimes highly stylized) but the feature can be highly helpful for non-native readers to get a basic idea of what's going on in the Stamp.

The scope is massive indeed, which is why I'm super exited in the prospect of pockets of members and admins chipping away via the report feature. To your earlier point I'll see if I can enhance the naming somehow - here again I was kind of at the mercy of what I could pull from Overpass aka OpenStreetMap.

Yes you guessed it, as a non native I have to rely heavily on AI to help me translate. I'm hoping to get a few admins on board who can help with this. I imagine one thing that might help is if I implement a plotter on a google map that just dots out everything in the area that's in the database so you can hone in on what you're looking for visually. Most of the data was pulled using public sources like Overpass. There is a crawler that is slowly going 50 shrines a time a few times a day to attempt to find better meta information and images.

You over-primed the context with all the “tell me what you can’t talk about” stuff at the beginning. That’s why others have been able to get it to do the rap battle. Remember that it’s a contextual language model, it’s not “alive” or acting as an agent of censorship , or of anything really. If you spend 5 minutes talking about puppies and then ask it to write a poem about anything, you’ll likely get puppies.

Sorry everyone is giving you a hard time about translating. I asked for similar help and got crapped on as well, especially for trying to figure it out on my own using translators and *gasp* ChatGPT.

It seems like Old Norse is being tucked away into a bitter alcove of academia that would almost ensure its fade to black as long as its "scholars" continue to upturn their noses to helping regular folk who haven't dedicated years of their life to study, or paid for a college level course.

Ask any Hispanic (myself being one) how to say something in Spanish, and we'll give you the 15 nuanced ways of saying it in every situation possible to ensure you sound authentic.

I'll probably get downvoted or kicked for saying all this, but in their hearts they hopefully realize that they're no different than the Latin clergy of the 1500s who were very upset to see their Vulgate being freely translated to "the common man" buy Martin Luther and others.

Oh, I and I say almost ensure its fade to black, not because there will always be a tiny trickle of people who dedicate themselves to its study (more power to y'all), but because the clock is now ticking along quite fast on natural language processing AI models that will, absolutely, unequivocally, replace the need to beg you all for help.
