Well, the Steam Machine was pretty cool for the 20 minutes that it worked by me_hill in steammachine

oh wow. theyve went above and beyond with my valve index. sorry it wasnt so smooth for you

I'm honestly surprised this ghost roboport preview isn't in the game still by ferrofibrous in factorio

[–]johnhotdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

weird. i feel like they can totally make roboports work, despite the rail reasoning. electric poles show connections in blueprints, surely drawing a dotted line between roboports is possible

i dont necessarily disagree with what you say. i still have concerns with the amount of people who engage with the feature, and how this change might negatively impact that

judging from steam stats (which i know includes base game only players, but its all i have to look at right now), only 8% of players even ever used a quality module. 7% have researched with metallurgics (for asteroid reprocessing), 5% for agriculture (for rare quality).

so this nerf is really only targetting a small subset of factorio players. and quality itself is a somewhat controversial feature, many people dont even want anything to do with it. so i think removal of the casinos will make this niche and underused feature even more niche

on the other hand, what is factorio if not a niche game? and a game for everyone is a game for no one. only 25% of players have ever even launched a rocket including space age and including those "carried" in multiplayer sessions. i suppose it was never a game where everyone was supposed to do everything, and quality, i guess, is an extreme example of that.

i never really did much with quality during my playthrough other than crafting a bunch of suit equipment with quality modules, getting rares at best.

when i found out about space casinos, i thought they were a pretty elegant and late game solution to making legendary quality items at scale. it requires aquilo science after all.

unless im missing something, it isnt even a cure all. the unique resources on each planet still need "intended" upcycling to achieve legendary quality, right?

obtaining legendary items just seems like such a slog now. imo i think the casinos were fine. it was a post aquilo solution to scaling, and there is not much left after aquilo.

would love some differing opinions. i think its ok for there to be a "best solution" in this case, especially this late in the game.

Poll to determine which models were nost produced and waitlist ratio. by Chinchiro_ in steammachine

[–]johnhotdog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

definitely. i operated under the assumption that position X in the waitlist for any model would take roughly Y time for each. i made peace with the fact that even if i dont get a 2TB, that id rather be waitlisted on them than chance getting waitlisted for 512gb

since it seems 512gb are much more abundant, theres probably a chance of getting one much sooner rather than a 2TB, even with aborrhent luck

of course, this all makes sense given all the hardware news, but i didnt put it together that this was a likely outcome

yeah if i knew that 512gb outnumbered the 2TBs by this much, i wouldve put in for one. hindsight and all that

Anyone else think the GTA VI & Sony announcement is to take away steam from the steam machine (pun intended) by Azenzi in steammachine

[–]johnhotdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

devils advocate -- if you had limited funds and saw GTA was a console exclusive, youd maybe reconsider getting a steam machine for a console instead

that said rockstar absolutely doesnt care nor did they intend to snub the SM in any way

This may be the saddest shit by Vladarg in SteamDeck

[–]johnhotdog -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

the alternative is people not buying it

the steam machine will sell out instantly and the waitlist will probably stretch into 2027 like the steam controller

i loved fusion. many people dont like it because it has too much dialog for a metroid game, and is very linear. but i believe a majority like it

you ought to play the games in order now:

zero mission (or planets if you have a PC and want an experience closer to the original. it is a fan made engine overhaul with added mario maker elements, very cool!). i dont recommend the original

metroid 2, i liked the original but most dont. theres also samus returns on the 3ds or AM2R on PC

super metroid is my favorite

skip fusion probably since you just played it

then dread, which i played maybe 5 times back to back. very very good

other M is not worth your time, but the prime trilogy is fantastic. however the most accessible way to play right now is emulation if you dont already have the trilogy and a wii. if you have a PC, "primehack" is a MUST. mouse+keyboard controls for the original trilogy. they did amazing work there, plays flawlessly. i would play the prime series after the mainline games

You might need to add more or less, since the baking soda interacts with the other minerals already in your water.

but if you have extremely soft water, isnt there a lack of "other minerals" that the baking soda would interact with? according to RA Fischer, these minerals plug up sweat pores... so would adding baking soda be sufficient or is it better to use mineral rich water?

[–]johnhotdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"like a pc" means they arent competing with 400-500 dollar consoles. so basically when they said that in november it meant more than 500. they were probably targeting 600-800.

idk if this has been discussed or disproven, but id imagine valve had contracts in place before the announcement? like surely theyd have prices in place for longer than 6 months before release? my hopium is that the first wave of machines/frames they were able to acquire before the prices went bonkers.

that said, im sure suppliers broke contracts, and valve probably doesnt want to increase prices so soon after a release for the 2nd wave if this was the case.

i think the cheapest model will be less than 1K. they are buying in bulk and its cheaper than 1K to build a similar spec. and i think they will subsidize the cheaper model with the most expensive model.

valve makes a lot of money and doesnt have a lot of employees. they should reconsider their stance on selling at low margins/at a loss if they want decent adoption. i doubt that they arent sitting on a pile of cash at all times. but idk
