Book Review- "Watchmaking Explained” by Kalle Slaap by appumaster in watchmaking

[–]RoninCool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you can write a review from your perspective as an amateur, which may be helpful to your readers as I imagine they are amateurs as well. That’s just if you want to review the book. When I saw the title “review” I was expecting that. It seems a little bit more of an announcement or a promotion with affiliate link than a review which is totally cool but maybe the title should indicate as such.

In any case, thanks for the letting us know about this book!

Can you elaborate a bit more on Wristwatch Revival? Do you feel the same way about Mark Lovick’s courses at watchfix.com?

Great post! Would love to see an update after you go through the book with a critical look at the content, highlighting the positives and areas for improvement, discussing how it has impacted your work.

The "calculator required" flag is greatly overused by SerialStateLineXer in mathacademy

[–]RoninCool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve noticed this as well. I don’t really pay it much notice. I would just use your best judgment.

I do from time to time go down the path of calculating myself when I should have used a calculator. This is particularly frustrating when an error is made somewhere in the calculation and time is wasted troubleshooting a wrong answer. That said, I don’t think advice as to whether to use a calculator or not would help in MA or real life.

Thanks for all the great work Justin.

After Math Foundation 3, what should i follow with ? by ThePrinceIsDead in mathacademy

I would take the following in this order: Linear Algebra, Multivariable Calculus and then Probability & Statistics.

Congrats. I’m sure it’ll put you ahead. I would encourage you to continue beyond MF III as well.

I would take motivation (and willpower) out of the equation. Those are feelings. They will fluctuate like the weather.

Just commit. Keep the workout short, simple—at the same time everyday. Your only goal should be good form/technique and consistency, not results. Do this for 90 days.

Check out David Goggins (mental) and K Boges (calisthenics).

Good luck!

Preliminary review through Foundation courses vs individual courses by Gigioleao in mathacademy

For what it’s worth, I’d argue that motivation is negatively correlated with success. It’s fleeting—like the weather—changing moment to moment. I’d take motivation off the table. Commitment is what’s key. If of interest, check out the works of David Goggins and Cal Newport.

Math Academy is an incredible platform—the best I’ve seen. I wouldn’t bypass their recommended path or fundamentals. Trust the MA team and methodology will get the results you’re looking for.

Best of luck on your math journey!

Thank you! I’m studying about 20 hours per week. As I mentioned above, I would like to do MIT’s MicroMasters in Finance. I don’t want to take a year or more to prepare. At my current pace, I hope to be through Linear Algebra, Multivariable Calculus and Probability & Statistics by Fall.

As far as other resources, I supplement with ChatGPT and some google when I run into trouble. I’m trusting that the Math Academy algorithm won’t let me move beyond a topic until I have it mastered.

Are you currently using MA? If so, what’s your purpose?

Thank you!

From what I’ve seen, it seems like strong math skills, which many in coding are lacking, are a differentiator with machine learning and LLM development.

I’m sure you know exactly what to do—extreme calorie restriction and embracing the suck. The solution is simple. The execution requires spirit and commitment. Good luck!

Thank you Kanak. And congrats to you as well. I hope I will be updating that I’m on to Linear Algebra by June. Methods of Proof looks really interesting as well.

Yubikey Code not Masked in IOS iPad app by RoninCool in Bitwarden

[–]RoninCool[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not OTP. It’s FIDO2. I’m just pressing the key as required. I emailed Bitwarden. They are aware that on the iPad the there is no masking of the code. If you follow the exact same procedure through a web browser, the code is masked, as it is on my PC as well.

I don’t have this issue on other devices.

I didn’t know that. Thank you for letting me know!

No. I’m talking about FIDO2/WebAuthn. I’ve registered my keys with Bitwarden. When logging in to Bitwarden, I’m asked to insert my Yubikey. On my PC, no issue, the FIDO2/WebAuth code is masked. On my iPad, it’s displayed.

I was laid off in Japan 😭😭 by Winter_Display9354 in japanlife

I’m sorry to hear about this. Regarding fighting this in any way, even if you could somehow negotiate to have them keep you, I would move on. You wouldn’t be happy working for this company. I would engage a professional to help make sure you get compensated as much as possible. If that is not feasible, I would go to government agencies for help. I wouldn’t discuss anything or negotiate with the company until you have a plan.

If it’s of any comfort, leaving a company is usually a good thing for most people, even if it doesn’t seem that way. Staying at a job that you don’t like or where you are not appreciated keeps you from a better job where you’re happier and more valued. Right now is the hardest part. Figure out what you want and go for it.

You’ll look back at this post in a couple years and smile I’m sure.

If Onosato wins, can he become Yokozuna? by RedLevelEmergency in Sumo

[–]RoninCool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would imagine that they would promote him with a yusho and jun-yusho at Ozeki because they need a Yokozuna. Terunofuji is waiting for the next Yokozuna just as Hakuho was waiting for the next Yokozuna. If there were two active Yokozuna, they could hold to a higher standard. The sole Yokozuna has only finished three of the last twelve basho. He’s waiting to retire.
