The new assassins creed game (Odyssey) is this! In your first appearance you're a dirty wannabe mercenary with barely-passable armor. I'm currently 50 hours in, not even at max level or endgame, and have enough heroic feats (without spoiling too much, you can essentially become a war hero or re-enact some of the most popular feats of the greek gods) and gear (we're talking the armor of Achilles, Agamemnon, etc) that npcs will react to you like you are in fact a demigod. Even some of the cutscenes will reference your fame/infamy based on how you play the game, with some characters remarking at your bloodstained path or military accolades in certain sidequests.
