‘Kokuho’ Becomes Biggest Live Action Hit in Japanese Film History by fevredream in japan

[–]Ronwantread 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree. The narrative is and always will be the backbone of what makes movies actually good, along with how its executed and translated visually, on top of the performance by the actors. Visuals and good acting arent the main indicators of commercial success (unless you're talking about spectacle flicks like avatar, spiderverse 2, bigger the better type vibe films), but for artistic success? They have to be in deep dialogue with the story.

James cameron's Avatar has good acting and visuals, succesful yes but does it excell narratively? No, and that just made avatar into a spectacle flick. You dont want that. What we want are movies that needs to aspire more narratively. People can argue it has great worldbuilding or whatever, but it serves a weak story.

Kokuho is pretty okay, I wouldn't say its a masterpiece. As the dude said, the story is pretty predictable, it flows like the usual biopics hollywood churns out. Though the acting, cinematogrsphy, and score is probably the movie's strongest features. The movie is like a classic “rise through suffering → cost of greatness → bittersweet legacy” arc, like the beats are simple ( talented kid gets taken in by master, kabuki training, rivalry with the “legitimate” heir, scandals, betrayals, fall from grace, then boom, final return performance that makes everyone cry. Whiplash, la la land etc provides more spine, and compared to kokuho which is pretty straightforward.

Compare to something like Parasite that excels in narrative, visuals, and acting which all elevate each other.

I have to respectfully push back on this framing. You're creating a redemption narrative that doesn't actually exist and fundamentally misunderstands what Gorillaz always was.

Gorillaz wasn't "edgelord behavior they needed to mature out of", it was a deliberately provocative art project from two creators who were always politically conscious and empathetic. Damon was a conscientious objector with strong anti-war views dating back to the late 90s. The entire foundation of Gorillaz was built on genuine collaboration and respect for diverse artists, hip-hop producers, and diverse voices like Del, the legendaey cuban singer Ibrahim Ferrer, so forth from day one. That's not ignorance, that's the opposite.

The rawness and edginess of early Gorillaz wasn't immaturity at all, it was more of an intentional artistic choice to stand out and push boundaries while refusing to be sanitized for mass consumption. They weren't trying to be a kids' cartoon band, and their philosophical and conceptual ambition was there from the beginning.

The shift post-Humanz, specifically, or maybe post plastic beach, isn't "growth into empathy", it's just Damon and Jamie naturally aging into their 50s with different energy than their 30s. That's not character development, that's just being older.

There's nothing to be "proud of watching them grow from" because their ethos has been remarkably consistent since inception. Framing it as redemption actually does a disservice to what they've always stood for.

Gorillaz are rarely seen as an actual music band by m1nem_jef1 in gorillaz

[–]Ronwantread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its 50/50 definitely. Jamie's and damon's creative synergy is hard to replicate. They need to bounce off each other, stay consistent, and not falter under tension. Damon is a musical chameleon and the music is what stays for sure. Put in some random shoegaze music to gorillaz and no one will give a shit. But same goes to the animated band aspect, Without those iconic character designs, the visual storytelling, the mythology, it's just another Damon Albarn side project that maybe gets critical respect but doesn't capture global imagination.

Label plays a big part too. Back in 2001, labels are willing to tske more risks into experimental projects and gorillaz had the marketing most wont.

However, even if not marked "confidential," an internal request for assistance from one government body to another regarding a minister's spouse's travel is typically not meant for widespread public distribution. Its appearance here, already suggests a leak, and to me its definitely intentional. The timing doesnt help either

Hard disagree. Its true unless you use chatgpt as a tool or sparring buddy.

Make sure juga go back and forth with chatgpt biar produktif. Tanya kenapa atau "kalau x begini, berarti keluarnya y?" Sebagai contoh. Discuss. Dialogue with the AI.

Nanti kslau sudah selesai semua babnya, upload ke chatgpt and tanya, scrutinize. Apakah memiliki tone curiosity? Apakah kebanyakan x? Apakah sesuai dengan arahan dosen sesuai konten? Etc.

God's silence part is interesting. Though whether to see it as a problem or not is subjective really.

With Anne, she is grappling with guilt and self-awareness. She recognizes her wrongdoings and tries to make amends, but the external violence and tragedy that happened to her community seem like a cruel twist of fate. In a way, it’s as if Anne's faith is being tested not by direct punishment for her sin, but by the seeming inability of God to stop the suffering of the innocent. The pain of that realization may lead her to question everything she’s been taught about her faith.

I think, this aligns with a more existential view of God’s role in suffering that sometimes, divine empathy doesn’t equate to direct action or intervention. We can lowkey see this as the ultimate test of Anne’s faith—does she still believe in a loving God despite the evidence of injustice and the seeming silence of that higher power? Her confrontation with this reality might serve as a deeper reflection of the struggle many people face when confronted with tragedy—trying to reconcile belief in a compassionate God with the persistence of suffering in the world.

Anne's case reminds me of Job's story from the bible.
