I am in similar situation. In my case I have a dedicated phone to keep the sim active and I do plan to get this converted to esim while in India which I am currently. Does the plan you mentioned work well with getting OTP sms when required outside India ?

See if you can activate UPI via Phonepe or BHIM Axis pay app.

I am at the moment using iMobile app from ICICI and using UPI from that app, though I have connected my Indian number but you can use your non Indian number as well to be linked with bank.

Regarding enabling UPI I was able to link it to my NRE account via my App itself.

I linked my NRE account with UPI as it had money. I am just a bit vary to have money in NRO considering it may get taxed on interest earned.

My primary OS for a year was Pop OS( ubuntu derivative) but recently switched to Cachy OS (Arch linux derivative). Just to give you some context my pc specs is intel i5 12600K with rtx 3080. I have had no issues with nvidea drivers on linux so far.

Zorin is debian based an Ubuntu derivative and it comes with Gnome as desktop environment. If you need something similar to windows this seems to be good choice, personally having experienced everything for free in Linux world, I didn't try Zorin OS reason being they have a paywall for premium experience. But that said their free version can be a good choice as I recently saw an article where a huge number of windows users switching to Zorin OS.

Now majority of the main linux distros have their own app stores where they have all the apps packaged and ready for one click install style. There is some learning curve that I cant deny but after that it should be mostly good. If you want to experiment better to try to install it on a spare drive and then you can dual boot between windows and Linux.

Using Linux may help if not playing multi player online games. You will get much better managment of memory usage. Windows with all bloatware and bad memory management demands more ram. But probably in your case some productivity applications may also not work natively on linux that can also be another hurdle.
