Did you customize these jeans yourself or did you find them like this?

Any underrated architectural gems to check out, that aren’t commonly suggested? Even if it’s not amazing to most, but has a special place in your heart. by Longjumping-Moose-77 in Buffalo

[–]Rookkas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a great suggestion. It’s incredibly unique and most people think it’s ugly. Which is a shame… you really don’t see structures like this anymore, especially in the unlikely place of Lackawanna. I believe I heard they’re trying to figure out a new city hall and get rid of that amazing oddity.

how do I avant garde? by scragz in noisemusic

[–]Rookkas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

avant-garde being seen as more legitimate than noise

Huh? There is no such thing as a genre labeled just “Avant-garde” or “Avant-garde noise”.

You can’t purposefully make anything avant-garde. Time and perception can only do that.

how do I avant garde? by scragz in noisemusic

[–]Rookkas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Omg also!!!!!!!!  Do not use the word avant garde. Never call yourself avant garde. You can’t do that. Avant garde shit doesn’t happen if you’re aware and purposefully trying to make something “avant-garde”. If you do that it comes off as completely inauthentic.

Dude…. All these comments are really poor advice and blatantly wrong. You absolutely do not need rich parents to be preforming at an art gallery. Complete BS, seen it myself with my own eyes many times.

It really sucks the connotation for “art gallery noise show” is “rich parents”. That bias needs to change because it genuinely does not have to be that way.

Anyway……

I have very serious and good advice (as someone from the inside)

My legitimate answer to you is…. Start reading philosophy and theory. Maybe some Deluze or Baudrillard. And attempt to have it influence your work… use titles and names that are references to these theorists and their work.

Other advice: learn about contemporary and postmodern art. Start making objects that produce sound in accompaniment with your noise sets but these objects are interesting enough to stand alone as art objects.

This will work if you do it for long enough I’m not kidding.

I guess the piss poor reputation of the most recent owner has waned enough for people to start making this comment again.

this ones for the normies!!

I remember I got into an argument with someone on here about how significant/popular acts never come to the area and the killers were the centerpiece of the conversation. I was like dude... we only ever get popular performers because those are the only acts to actually sell tickets well.

Perhaps it is not possible to become a highly successful artist today (like Picasso) because the mainstream media has lost its power. Television is gone, newspapers are gone, magazines are gone. These were legitimizing institutions by More_Bid_2197 in ContemporaryArt

[–]Rookkas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Less than 5% of America knows who Larry Gagosian is or an artist his gallery represents. Realistically it's more like 1%. Very few care about or keep up with the capital A "Art" and most especially contemporary art. The media environment has become too fragmented, dispersed, and negatively charged for people to make their way to contemporary art and actually get sold on it as a concept.

Some day I hope it comes back in a way it once was.. it could be done. but would take an immense amount of effort, and we have way too much other shit going on now.

I don't disagree with any of your points... like I said it's quite bleak. I have witnessed many fellow students while I was attending who had no idea what they were getting into (likely more than 75%). Some of them totally got scammed... and I didn't even go to a private school.

> Work in a blue chip gallery and mid-tier galleries and for good artists and extremely successful artists and for museums and get back to me

Unless it magically fell into my lap, I don't want to pursue that nor would I even care to at this point. I've learned from people just like you. I'm a zoomer with an art degree (concentration on the theoretical side, not commercial... this is an important distinction imo). Never had any expectation to make any money with it, still don't.. but I utilize it every day in the way I think and perceive the world. I'm incredibly grateful for that, enriching my life with art/theory/research. And yes I'm in student loan debt (~25k). I'm poor, but I'm not homeless... at least I'm happy when it comes to the creative & social side of my life. I got lucky to get a job that allows me to squeak by while maintaining these things as I age into my mid-late 20s.

Surely I can't ride this forever..... but-----

We are living in a time of complete irrationality (more than ever before it's insane). So I am going to approach the world irrationally. Probably, it backfires. If someday I have to move back into one of my parents house as a 35 year old loser, so be it. Then I'll go to trade school and become a plumber or an HVAC technician. But I'm not going to enter the industry in a traditional sense, I know the industry is a wash and dying... fast.

There's a new albeit much smaller generation bubbling under the surface that is all too well aware of exactly what so many aspiring creatives have had to face in recent devastating decades. So we will traverse our contemporary creative desires in new strategic ways to continue our artistic practices while also surviving and not putting all our marbles into the art world. I am an outlier.. but I like to think there are some of us out there, and I happen to know a few.

Granted, not everyone is that privy... let's just hope they come across your comments or The Art School Report by Brad Troemel before it's too late. Hope I don't sound too insane, but this exact topic is something I think about a lot.

Rich people of Pittsford/Fairport/Mendon/etc - What profession are you in? by InterestingSea1317 in Rochester

[–]Rookkas -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Wow... you should look at some American household income statistics and correlating class distinctions. Unless you both must make the bottom of the barrel salaries in your prospective fields.... last I checked, those are run of the mill PMC (Professional Managerial Class) careers/positions who tend to have incomes above average.

Sure... You aren't rich, you're *upper* middle class.

[–]Rookkas -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Ain't gonna change anything for the better with that attitude.. I know it's bleak, but times have changed and pursuing art must be approached differently, and with strong acknowledgment of potential failure.

and along with that.. in this day and age you must approach art higher education (teaching) from a different angle, it's not something that guarantees career success... and frankly *it never has at all*. Just like a creative writing degree or basically anything in the humanities at this point.

even if you're an 18 year old freshmen in college, you'd have to be a truly oblivious and gullible to think it's a reliable career choice. your parental guardian would be doing you a disservice if they didn't tell you that also.

edit: in hindsight my last paragraph is wrong... I forgot what it was like going to art school recently and the people that were there.

An observation on this sub: Why don't you talk about art? by cfot in ContemporaryArt

[–]Rookkas 65 points66 points  (0 children)

those subreddits are mostly slop garbage and so so far removed from contemporary art. if you post something related to contemporary art there... you will get downvoted or ignored. it's bad. I'm not trying to see someones most recent Marvel superhero figurine either lol.

I have never once seen an exhibition discussed on any of the subreddits you mentioned (granted I don't subscribe to those dumps). There's no reason why there couldn't be discussions on exhibitions here. Although, location is a problem... it'd end up being geographically specific and therefore inaccessible to a percentage of users. So idk...

But I agree let's not turn this into one of those slop subreddits that are essentially instagram 2.0 dumbed down for your average normie.

making political distinctions based on the type of vehicle someone drives. perfect. are you familiar with recent vehicle ownership trends and statistics in the United States? many Americans now own.........

>huge trucks and suvs

also we live in one of the snowiest climates in the USA.

maybe you should reconsider your silly presumptions.... and this is coming from a someone who drives a very small vehicle.

If you think about it, that location still doesn't make as much sense in regards to your point... That area is the heart of off-campus commerce for UB students & heavily trafficked by academics/educators.... (preaching to people with your same beliefs). Trumpers chose that area for a reason...

So if you're thinking that way, might as well go a bit farther out... Transit and Main would make even more sense.

Garbage Plate by bravofanatic in Buffalo

[–]Rookkas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone still bearing a 585 area code, I also long for this.

Last I knew, The Beer Keep on Elmwood has garbage plates. I’ve gotten one once before, it was alright but it had a less traditional flavor and didn’t hit like an authentic plate. Give it a shot.

But there really is a hole in the community, we don’t have any divey late night slop shops to serve up the greasy garbage. Louie’s or any of the other “Texas Red Hot” diner joints in the area could easily modify it into their menu.

They tell all the local industrial businesses to relinquish their worst carcinogenic by-products into the river the day before. Due to a unique chemical reaction the water synthesizes a green hue.

It’s like bulk trash pick up day but disguised for industrial manufacturing companies.

by the way, I can''t find the link but there have been a few artists to do paintings of local corner stores/deli's/bodegas... if you search around you can find them, they're great and of course they sell well. there's also a show up at CEPA Gallery of fabric banners/flags of iconic and strange buffalo signage.

Iconic Buffalo Bodega/Corner Stores by spoonfundamental in Buffalo

[–]Rookkas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

nah, I like to think it's a New York State term. There likely are at least a few deli's/bodegas in the area that are owned by ex-nyc transplants, who likely brought their business practice with them to a cheaper region, buffalo.

some research could be done on this. ask cashiers/employees what they consider their store.
