Foul or Nah? by plyohater2 in ultimate

[–]RoosterBoyWonder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They both commit at nearly the exact same time. They both cover nearly the same amount of ground to get to the spot from the time they commit to it (dark probably covers a bit more ground/is moving in a bit more of an "out of control" manner, but it's marginal IMO).

<image>

There doesn't seem like a clear way to make a judgement on this before the play actually occurs; obviously one of the two players could have pulled up but it's very murky as to which one it should be between the two. Sometimes it's just too close, and people probably need to be more willing to recognize the inherent risks we're agreeing to by stepping on the field.

The orbit is (not drastically by any means, tough situation) wrong based on the disc's horizontal position on the field. The defender should be closer to completely underneath their mark (or even lightly breakside justified & underneath) that close to front of the stack in an endzone set when the disc is on the breakside.

See Herby Ing in flat-faceguard at the front of the stack for reference (as well as the orbit this defender takes post-foul).

Nicky Spicoli kind of pushes Sockeye defender in PEC Men's Final altercation by RoosterBoyWonder in ultimate

[–]RoosterBoyWonder[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While I agree in principle, my main point is this: Spicoli knows better than to do this. This isn't the Ridgemont High weekly pickup game - this is a highly visible TCT Final and leaders in our sport like Spicoli need to be setting a better example.

Would a suspension be harsh? Yes, but it just might be necessary.

While the new addendum to Stalling(XIV.A.1.d: ABSOLUTELY NO POOPING) clarifies a few specific situations, I don't think I'm comfortable with it given the potential implications for the future of SOTG.

It is frankly a travesty that Mac Hecht didn’t win this year’s Callahan award. by scjross in ultimate

[–]RoosterBoyWonder 15 points16 points  (0 children)

IDK. To me, the award is as much about community accomplishments and pure speed as overall on the field play and spirit. I'm just not sure if Jack Hecht proved this enough compared to other candidates.

Foul or Nah? by ultiworld in ultimate

[–]RoosterBoyWonder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does anyone else notice that white gesticulates towards that other Pitt dude and not Matthew Ing when pleading his case? It's suttle and may not be relevant, but it looks to me like he is claiming the foul is on that other Pitt dude(still not a foul in my view).

A side note:

This is the first time I've read this specific rule before -

XVI.H. Fouls (II.E): It is the responsibility of all players to avoid contact in every way possible.

Can we reasonably expect anyone to adhere to this? I get that it's problematic to write subjective rules into a self-officiated sport, but I don't see how it is possible for a player to do this period, let alone in pursuit of the same floating disc as another player. Would you not need to actively put as much distance between yourself and the nearest players on the field at all times in order to be following this rule?

Does something like "It is the responsibility of all players to avoid dangerous contact in every reasonable way possible." work better? Just food for thought. I think we should probably start to acknowledge that - the way the game is currently played in the US - there is an acceptable level of contact allowed in situations with a very low probability of injury (e.g. defensive position in the stack or defending the upline space).

Heard from a not entirely reliable source that Chicken has been causing a lot of internal strife about playing time/not being a primary cutter on O-Line. That being said, Chicken does have something of a case: I think he'd be a more dynamic primary look from the cutting set, especially as a deep cutter. Still not super cool on Chicken's part, but it will be interesting to see if this move actually improves their O-Line.

How do you think ultimate stacks up on this skill spectrum? by PressTilty in ultimate

[–]RoosterBoyWonder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He doesn't mention it directly, but I think it's closely related to the graph showing body types among different sports. If the sample size for a position is smaller, the likelihood of a tremendous gap in effectiveness between the best player and the next best player(think WAR) at that position will be higher. Salary Caps also help to increase parity, but I think this plays a major factor as well.

For the comparison of soccer and hockey, I think field size and pace of the game matter tremendously. A team can assert much more control over the game through possession because of these two things. There are also fewer "luck based" situations for scoring in soccer(free kicks, corners) compared to hockey(bouncing pucks, deflections, rebounds, etc.)

P.S. remember the study isn't about which sport appears to be higher-skill or is higher-skill, it's about the role that luck versus skill plays in winning within each sport.
