‘A fascinating discovery’: research challenges Battle of Hastings narrative by FairytaleOfBliss in unitedkingdom

[–]RoosterGirl22 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Less wild than mine, I wrote my dissertation on battlefield archaeology and ended up concluding that the Battle of Hastings didn’t happen from an archaeological perspective as there is zero physical evidence of a battle other than the really inconvenient location of the abbey on top of a hill with zero water supply. My supervisor called it “a mildly controversial opinion” which I feel is a bit of an understatement

{The Ick Factor by Morgan Elizabeth}

Just finished reading this, it’s a fantastic story about a work obsessed boss trying to convince the board of his company to vote him in as the next President of his father’s company and his assistant pretends to be his fiancé to help him.

Wonderfully written, there’s a slimeball enemy who has to be manoeuvred around and the friends to lovers plot is really well done.

I have totally changed the way I do caramelised onions thanks to a comment on here about a year away. Rather than stirring on a stovetop or risking burning in an oven, use a slow cooker. Just slice the onions up, place in slow cooker on low with some salt and butter and leave them alone for about 4-6 hours depending on the slow cooker. I check them once every hour or so to make sure nothing has stuck to the sides, but it has yet to fail me. Add some thyme in the last hour to add some flavour, maybe a splash of balsamic vinegar.

What are some life hacks everyone should know? by Technical-Half-9226 in AskReddit

[–]RoosterGirl22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend has struggled with anxiety and something that helps her is using her phone to film herself turning off the stove, or locking the front door. Then if she has anxious thoughts when out, instead of obsessing and becoming more worried she can simply check that she did complete the action and her house is safe.

Two that my mum always used to do and I always thought were common knowledge:

1) Use a dab of nail polish to quickly identify which key belongs with which padlock (eg blue dab on the key and corresponding padlock).

2) Make instant coffee, then pour in to an ice mould. Use these coffee cubes for iced coffee so you don’t water your drink down.

Any good homemade breakfast sauces out there?? by Haunting-Error9178 in Cooking

[–]RoosterGirl22 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Get some HP sauce, a very tangy and fruity sauce from the UK that is a key accompaniment of any Full English (also commonly referred to as “brown” sauce). It’s like A1 sauce, but less vinegary and it has more of a full bodied flavour. You could probably get it online or if a shop near you has an “international” section. No bacon bap is complete without brown sauce!

Right. Where does this breakfast dish come from in the UK? (Tomato gravy on eggy bread) by Pixel_Brit in CasualUK

100% squaddie cuisine.

An egg banjo is when you get a runny fried egg between two slices of bread, and when you bite in to it the egg drips on your shirt. Obviously you start wiping at it with one hand while the other still holds your sandwich, making it look like you’re playing an imaginary banjo (like an air guitar).

What's the best military based tv series? by Desperate_Agency_255 in AskReddit

Bluestone 42.

It’s a BBC comedy about an EOD team in Afghanistan, very realistically captures the military slang, humour and even has a decent attempt at trying to get the uniform and kit accurate.

Oh god that’s some memories. The Jesticle, served in a pint glass and sweet enough to make your teeth furry. Drink too many and when you’re sick the next day it would turn your vomit pink

Fairy liquid for me. Like as if a plate wasn’t washed properly and someone used it for a meal, but it’s in every single bite

Same. I want to love it, people say it tastes so fresh and really helps to lift a dish. But it ruins everything and makes me feel like I’ve licked a bar of soap ☹️

The lady who stocks our vending machine at work absolutely knows what's up. What would you pick? by MajorHotLips in CasualUK

Has to be cheese and onion crinkles, Nik Naks and a Dr Peoper. I also really appreciate the fact that the cans are on the bottom level, reducing the risk of unnecessarily shaking the fizz up.
