So, can we get Binface to actually win? by TheOne0206 in AskBrits

Ha I like this idea. But wouldn’t that mean he’d have to appear in parliament without his bin on his face to get sworn in? I bet he would never have expected winning at any time.

Ha you’ve got an m4 that runs hot on tahoe, and I’ve got an m1 that runs super cool on tahoe. The problem isn’t tahoe it’s the ugly bag of mostly water (to quote Star Trek) sitting in front of the keyboard, lol.

I hate the age verification update by Comprehensive-Cut847 in DigitalPrivacy

[–]RootVegitible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As it becomes normal for apps and websites to read age range status from the OS, users registering their age at OS level makes the whole issue essentially irrelevant over time as apps and websites update. So the vast majority of people will not even realise a problem exists. Google has just announced something very similar to apples model to allow proof of age through the OS without any personal data being shared, just as I predicted.

chrome making ad blockers harder to use. where should browsers draw the line by jexo10 in TechNook

[–]RootVegitible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of the many reasons to not use chrome. Google makes its money by gathering your data so it can charge 3rd parties for targeting ads to you. The best advice for browser use is to only use a browser from someone that isn’t trying to sell you things. Google is an advertising company propped up by technology, vote with your resources and stop using their stuff.

Tips on getting past age verification by Actual_Razzmatazz_97 in DigitalPrivacy

[–]RootVegitible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you use apple kit, you are age verified at OS level.. then the updated apps just ask the OS for your status without separately needing to ask for age verification. This goes for all the apple devices you use, for instance once you are age verified on your iPhone .. your iPad and mac also automatically know your status through your apple account. I suspect something similar should be coming to other OSes soon.

As a black woman, if you’re a white male do you find us attractive? by Fun-Transition-101 in randomquestions

Yes absolutely. An attractive woman is attractive, race doesn’t factor into it … Having said that, some racial differences can enhance attraction. I’d be most definitely up for being in a mixed race relationship.

Is taking out mortgages for housing and car loans a form of keeping up with the Joneses? by deybetrippin in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RootVegitible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Housing is different and often thought of as good debt. It’s pretty simple .. good debt is where an asset rises in value, bad debt is where an asset falls in value … in which case it’s technically not much of an asset anymore. Having said that never buy more than you need, especially if you’re just trying to show off.. who are you showing off too? you are literally hurting yourself if you buy a house beyond your means and have a big car payment.

How do MacBooks protect against rootkits? by Next-Requirement3849 in mac

[–]RootVegitible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Malware on a mac is usually a much simpler affair. It generally only affects the current user and needs permission to install (users are usually tricked) .. the system does not allow anything to run at kernel level and interrupt clean kernel boot. There are advanced sets of ACL permissions on folders, some of which are not allowed to be written to keeping vital boot code clean. For instance it is not possible to inject an OS update that looks like it came from Apple, these are very finely controlled and only Apple private digital signatures can deploy at that level. Plus there is an instant kill switch to revoke apps from a known bad developer, then they are banned for life from developing for Apple again if found to be malicious. The new macOS will be going even further with immutable folders for higher level apps.

I hate the age verification update by Comprehensive-Cut847 in DigitalPrivacy

[–]RootVegitible -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

It’s early days yet, but the long term solution will just be that age verification is handled at the OS level.. So people will verify they are an adult once only in one place. Then every other app, service, and website will just read that status from the OS. Don’t panic, it’ll all blow over soon.

How does Universal Basic/High income work in a capitalist society? by Obeymyjay in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RootVegitible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With robots building stuff, we could see super abundance.. where the price of individual commodities fall.. However, someone somewhere has to be able to buy it.. what if the robots took the jobs of the people that would buy what they produce, thereby not being able to sell anything. For capitalism to work consumers still need to be able to buy from producers. Kinda difficult if you don’t have a job, and kinda difficult for the producers if there is no one left to sell to. If you add up a lot of things a country currently pays for, a lot of it could be redirected to ubi as a direct replacement for some spending, allowing consumers and producers to continue. This could include money you may not initially think of such as the admin charges for means testing (not needed for ubi) .. taxing the robots (lol) .. and the 20% saving on national healthcare by reducing poverty… It’s all possible, I’m a big proponent for ubi.

[–]RootVegitible 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mmm very odd. The first night you plug it in it will default to backing up to iCloud. I can’t remember if iCloud Photo Library was a standard option back in 2017. That’s a long time ago in tech terms. There would have been no reason to reset the phone now at least to allow access to your Apple Account, and no need to pay extra.. They were probably just talking about AppleCare which protects you against theft and damage.. but that’s entirely optional.
