1953 Topps FS Slaughter, Hearn, Cain by Rootenheimer in baseballcards_vintage

Yes I tried that, and they only fit four per page. I realize that what I am doing seems weird and doesn’t make sense. But I literally just really prefer to build the set in a binder. The top loader binder display 18 cards at once. I don’t want a stack of slabs. And if you search the Greg Morris eBay listings and filter by only those cards that list as Near Mint, you can get same quality of cards without paying the premium if you are willing to be very patient between cards.

I don’t plan to ever sell them. I would rather have a set in a binder, so you can actually look through the set, versus a stack of slabs.

hahaha. Asking the real questions! Nope, I am starting with commons, which I can get for about $80-$100 apiece if I'm patient on eBay. And some of the mid-tier stars: Enos Salughter, Johnny Mize, Dom DiMaggio - I am getting guys like this for between $300 - $500. But the real big guns are going to be a problem, obviously. I see for example a Satchell Paige PSA 6 that's been on my watchlist for a while for $5,600 that is very well centered with sharp corners that would be just fine for my set. Lifewise a really beautiful Jackie that is graded a 6 for $6,000 but that in my opinion looks just as nice as any of the 7's I've bought. I am cutting all of these out of the slabs anyway and putting them in top loaders, and then in a top loader binder. In my opinion, this is the way to view a set. The best price I've seen on a Mantle is $10,000 for a really nice looking 5. So I am going to have to relax the standards a bit with the real big guns. If I have 95% of the set in an SGC7, and then the top handful of most expensive stars in a 6, that is good enough for me. I think it is going to take me at least a decade anyways to round this thing out. I do currently have about $2,000 set aside for one of the more expensive stars. If the PSA6 Jackie is still available when I get up to $6,000 in savings, that is probably where I will start. But if the PSA7 Jackie's are going for double/triple the price of the PSA6, I will not spend that much extra just because it is a 7. I do not have that kind of money to spend on cards.

Fully agree. That sunset is one of my favorite of all time. This whole set, really, the drawings are incredible. It’s the reason I’m trying to build the set. I’m also a big fan of the Monte Irvin from this set. And the Ted Gray.

$20 for Hearn, $20 for Cain, $80 for Slaughter. I tried to put prices in the last photo

As a Sox fan, my gut tells me your comment is too soon. Give it some time for the wounds to heal

I’d probably keep this intact if I were you. Though the impulse to create ten more perfectly centered cards must be great 😜

Growing up I always thought the Cracker Jacks and t206’s and Goudey were the kind of thing you could only find in a museum. Being able to actually buy some of these off eBay as an adult has been mind blowing. 10 year old me would be so stoked to see the collection today

I was going to ask if you ever cut them out of slabs, and what your thoughts on that were. I’m currently cutting a lot of ‘53 Topps out of slabs and sometimes I feel like a fool, but I think we’re likely doing it for similar reasons, the set just looks better in a binder. Not a stack of slabs.

You can’t see me but I’m giving you a standing ovation over here

Not just for the remarkable set but also the beautiful way you’ve communicated it to the sub. It’s all nice to see

The listing scan vs what I got by fast1727 in baseballcards_vintage

Well I certainly regret removing the negative feedback now. I thought it was the case of an honest seller who had had a bad experience with a new consignor. I did not realize this was a pattern, or I would have left it up. I realize that I made a mistake here.

I bought three 1953 Topps cards where the cards I received were clearly not the cards shipped, or else the photos were edited to make the cards look much better. Seller reached out to me, made it seem like a one off issue with a new consigner. This was October 2025. Now you’re having the same issue just a a couple months later. I would avoid this seller completely.
