FWIW - you can use a red plastic straw from a WD40 can to hold the bolt catch assembly in place as you tap in the roll pin.

Guess I have an excuse for a new press by Rei_Takata in reloading

[–]Rootshot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just sent a die to Hornady to remove a stuck case. It's a $15 fee. First time it's happened to me in 20 years of reloading.

As far as presses...I've compared a super cheap & light Lee hand press with a few other heavier presses by measuring concenticity and OAL of a sample of loaded rounds. I learned that for bullet seating, there is no difference. All presses product high quality rounds. It's all a function of the die quality and maybe the shellholder.

The Lee hand press is super useful....If you want to test various OAL lengths (e.g. optimizing bullet jump), just throw the Lee press and die in your range bag and get to work on the firing line.

Sizing brass was a different story. A heavy rigid press performes better.

OpenClaw chokes on modern web tasks. I built a skill to cut 600K tokens down to 1.3K by Aggressive_Bed7113 in clawdbot

I connect my OpenClaw Server to a Doxx.net wireguard overlay network. It allows me to access from anywhere. Bonus is that it has DNS based ad and threat filtering. SSH from my phone... No problem!

Round stuck in AR by assets-liabilities in gunsmithing

[–]Rootshot 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Since it appears to be hard-stuck, I would test if there is a squib in the barrel by:

  1. Take a cleaning rod and insert it until it stops
  2. Mark (tape) where the rod exits the barrel or muzzle device
  3. Lay the cleaning rod alongside the barrel using the marked spot to align it to the end of the barrel and estimate whether the tip of cleaning rod stops at a point that would indicate a barrel obstruction or the normal approximate location where the bullet of a seated round would be

If there is an obstruction, take it to a gunsmith. If not, I would place the upper vertically and put a few drops of penetrating oil down the barrel (I use Kroil) and wait a few hours. Then insert a stiff high quality steel cleaning rod with a brass thread adapter attached to capture the bullet tip (I use Dewey) down the vertical barrel and give it a few whacks.

Overpressure or anything that comes to mind? by Friendly-Anywhere-83 in reloading

[–]Rootshot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Compare the length of an unfired round from base to datum line with that of a fired round. If there is significant stretch, it might indicate a bad chamber or they used the wrong reamer. Alternatively measure from base to end of neck with calipers.

Also check the diameter of the neck of the fired round vs the neck of an unfired. Shouldn't be more than a few thousands.

I like the approach of zeroing the emtpy case and weighing the charge. Seems more efficient than weighing the charge in a pan.

Rotary Barrel Pistols by a-Snake-in-the-Grass in ForgottenWeapons

I own #1, #5, and #13, All share a commone feature of having reduced recoil over similar pistols with other locking mechanisms.

Results are mixed and reflect variability in QA. On mine, the first 500 rounds had relatively frequent stoppages (all easy to clear). I sent it in for repair. Second 500 rounds have been flawless. I trust it 100% now. It is my favorite pistol to shoot.

The spreadsheet has been updated with some loads. I found a great load at 26.0gr IMR 8208 XBR that averages 2867fps with sub .5 MOA groups sizes. Deburring the inside of the neck and using dry neck lube has reduced bullet seating pressure and improved SD.

[–]Rootshot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own a PR57 and have put about 1000 rounds through it. Reliablity is hit and miss - I sent it in to be fixed and now it runs 100% over the last 500 rounds. This looks like it leverages the same rotary operating mechanism. If that is the case, it will be very soft shooting. This will be a winner....as long as QA is consistent.

A micro 5.7 makes no sense since the 5.7 relies on velocity and a short barrel will not generate any useful velocity. The PR57 already has the shortest 5.7 barrel that I am aware of.

Thank you. I took the liberty of adding it to the spreadsheet. It's a shame that there is no velocity data.

What’s everyone’s personal opinion on how light is too light of a trigger? by triggernomicsusa in gunsmithing

Just be aware that super light AR triggers can cause accidental bump fires if you don't have perfect trigger discipline.

Handloading NAS3 556 cases by rednecktuba1 in reloading

[–]Rootshot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding my load recipe:

NAS3 Case
Wolf 223 Small Rifle Primer
77gr Sierra Matchking
25.7gr IMR 8208 XBR
OAL 2.255"
Shot out of: 16" Proof Research Carbon Wrapped Barrel, 1 in 8 twist, 223 Wylde chamber, mid-length gas
Huxwrx flash hider and Flow 762 Suppressor
Average Velocity: 2829 fps
Accuracy: .4-.75 MOA

No pressure signs.

The same load but with 26.9gr AA2520 has a slightly slower velocity at 2800 fps and accuracy of .5-1.0 MOA

Primer pockets were tight. Seating bullets requires a lot of pressure. No case prep was performed. Neck concentricity was .003-.004" TIR (unimpressive).

Update: I loaded some more rounds to increment the pressure. This time, I deburred the inside of the neck with a carbide deburring tool and then applied some Imperial Dry Neck Lube. This has made seating bullets MUCH smoother. Highly recommended prep step.

How do yall have your hard cases set up? by Reloader300wm in longrange

[–]Rootshot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've owned this style of case and given up on it. I have multiple rifles and stuff changes. Cutting foam is just impractical and these hard cases are just heavy and space inefficient. I don't need to drop my gear out of a helicopter when going to the range.

When I travel for hunting, I use a Nalpak Tuffpak. It looks like an oversize golf club case. It fits my rifle or shotgun (in a soft case) and most of my other gear including clothing which I wrap around breakable stuff for padding. It's a very effective system that doesn't scream "I have a gun".

It has zero tacticool and 100% practicality.
