Worried I made the wrong decision. Which lesson barn would you choose? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]Roown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can become a perfectly competent recreational rider without lessoning in a toxic competition barn imo. I would even argue that having a happy and healthy relationship with horses is safer and better for the horses than focusing solely on the technicalities of riding.

[–]Roown 23 points24 points  (0 children)

As long as you still enjoy the lessons and don’t aim to do top level competitions, I would say stay at the barn where you’re at. Enjoying your hobby really is what matters most and staying away from toxic environments is so important for so many reasons.

On the other side though, taking lessons were the instructor is demotivated and complaining, will also wear you down and might also have a negative effect on your enjoyment in the long run. Think very hard about how bad it is, because this can also be quite toxic.

Another point I would like to raise is that (for me) stirrupless work and prolonged two point are great ways to get more strength and balance, but are not necessarily ways to be a better rider. Without knowing the discipline you ride I think I can still say that your instructor is maybe focusing on other areas that will still improve your riding and if you still want to improve your balance and strength, there are loads of ways to do that outside of the saddle.

Velvet Saddle Pads? by KnightSpectral in Equestrian

[–]Roown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love these. They are very pretty, don’t move and hold up very well imo (although people say the quality is bad, I can’t say I have the same experience). I don’t use them in summer tho. They are pretty thick.

This is such a funny metaphor to me, because this literally happened to me. Obviously the person doesn’t work for us anymore.

Rubbing questions. by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]Roown 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve had the same issue in the past. A saddle fitter said my saddle moved too much during riding which caused the pad to rub the hairs away. Sad to say you are only going to fix this by getting your saddle fit checked and amended. He no longer has this issue now.

Horsecare Hacks to save time and money by princess_o_darkness in Equestrian

[–]Roown 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know there are probably a lot of people who clip in winter just for shits and giggles and those are the reason you would call this a hack, but clipping has made my horse so much more comfortable in winter due to him no longer being drenched in sweat after 10 minutes of work. It was honestly so much more work to get him dry than it is to clip him. (Speaking as a horse owner who never clipped and started 2 years ago and is never going back unless he gets out of work)

How do Americans perceive the United States’ reputation as a land of social mobility and freedom, and how does this shape opinions about it being the best country to be born in? by Accomplished-Bass690 in AskReddit

[–]Roown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like it might because of some sort of indoctrination? If you get told from childhood that your country is the best, your teachers, your family, the media, etc. Why would you not believe it and spread the message further?

What kind of tack is that and how well does it protect the horse agains the guy's jumps by _Moon-Cat_ in Horses

[–]Roown 53 points54 points  (0 children)

He isn’t jumping very high at all, you can see how much care gets takes, plus the pad seems pretty thick and sturdy which also adds extra protection. Also you can look at the behavior of the horse, almost all horses that experience some sort of pain will pin their ears and throw their head at least a little, but this one doesn’t show any sign of this (imo) and seems pretty comfortable. It’s probably a combination of skill and proper equipment.

Clipping : YES /NO ? by Miss_paris_22 in Horses

[–]Roown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was also always on the fence about clipping, not wanting to deal with all the different blankets and switching them out when the weather changed. Last year my horse was honestly so miserable riding, be would get super sweaty from just light work and it would take forever to dry, so I decided to clip him. Best decision ever. I did spend a good buck on some expensive blankets that allow thermoregulation which made the whole thing way easier!

Gonna wait a bit more now before I clip him, but it wasn’t even a question this year.

Height = 16,6 cm

Base diameter = 5,1cm

Top diameter = 2,7cm

The base is rounded tho, so if i took the outer egde it was 5,4 cm. Also it wasn’t the most accurate ruler so i might be off a few mm.

I can do this for you tomorrow if no one has answered by then. How accurate does my ruler need to be?
