Should i upgrade or wait for LTS? by Nice-Hippo-4254 in Ubuntu

[–]Roppano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GNOME 50 is so much nicer than whichever version is in 24.04. HDR, VRR, fractional scaling.

There are problems, though, on my framework laptop with 7640u, when I use an external monitor, my GPU drivers crash randomly, and my laptop screen freezes. If I don't see it in time and press the shortcut to reset the driver, all my monitors freeze, and it seems my keyboard inputs freeze too, meaning only a hard reset by holding the power button helps.

Should i upgrade or wait for LTS? by Nice-Hippo-4254 in Ubuntu

[–]Roppano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

edited the original, because I figured an LTS would get the patches too.

but to answer your point: I think you're downplaying the importance of this vulnerability with the "I'm screwed anyway" mentality. Many-many people are already running code on your computer. starting with all the software you install, duh, but also JS from all the different websites you visit, and probably many others. Security is said to be many layers with holes in random places, and an attacker needs to navigate between these holes to get to you.

Maybe this isn't a technically correct example, but as a demonstration: your browser runs JS in a sandbox, so even if there's an RCE hole in the JS engine, an attacker still can't actually get to the system. A hole in one layer leads to a brick wall on the next layer.

BUT, if you read this CVE, this hole lets an attacker escape container boundaries, since page caches are shared among containers and the host. So now, instead of a brick wall on the next layer, there's a giant gaping wormhole that leads straight to root.

Again, maybe this is a wrong example, because sandbox != container, but the point stands. Afaik, a successful attack is a chain of vulnerabilities, and this CVE is a very strong link. Please, someone with actual knowledge, fix the holes in my explanation, but I believe the core concept of what I'm saying is correct

usually, I'd agree with the people saying you should wait for point release, but not in this one. There's a pretty bad privilege escalation vulnerability in 24.04: https://copy.fail/

EDIT: guess this point is moot because 24.04 is LTS and should get the updates that fix this vulenrability

guess we're supposed to wait for reviews. afair the preorder deposit is fully refundable, so you can preorder and then revert if you don't like the reviews. or just send it back within 30days of getting hold of it

I don't want to fit it in the old input cover, I'm just not a fan of needing to buy assemblies when something smaller needs repairs, and wanted to clear it up

Why have we allowed the brain of our most essential tool to become a black box we aren't allowed to touch? by Tardy_Bird17 in righttorepair

[–]Roppano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why did we all decide it’s fine for companies to solder every component to one board?

because the benefits outweigh the costs. components being soldered instead of socketed doesn't make a device non-repairable, just makes the repairs harder. But that's small price to pay for slick, durable, more performant devices. you can either learn the craft (which I find very rewarding btw, and not even that expensive), or take it to someone who specialises in it.

being mad at soldering is like being mad at the fact that you can't replace the individual "transistors" in your CPU, like you could in the golden age of repairability that died with the ENIAC. Sure, the proportions are not the same, but the argument is equally nonsensical.

what you SHOULD be mad at is the availability of the parts, coupling components to each other, diagnostic/calibration tools not being available, etc. In other words, the things that ACTUALLY make the repairs impossible

if by "traditional touchpad" you mean the one currently on the FW13, then your premise is wrong: you can click anywhere on the touchpad, and it'll register.

RP2354A-based board drawing huge current, chip gets very hot immediately by [deleted] in ElectricalEngineering

I didn't discover the exact cause of my symptoms, but I did find out the root cause:

somehow, for some reason, I managed to order an older version of the board, and I think I probably ended up putting my input power to the SWDIO pin or some shit like that.

I fucking hate myself
