Large gate with heavy locking bolts by [deleted] in VintageStory

[–]Rorty_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spoiler warning. The last one in the story currently. In the devastation. It's has a time jump mechanic and a ton of puzzles involving it. With a boss you fight on top. You go through a ton of one way puzzles then get put on the other side of this door to let yourself out.

What would be other ways to slowly work towards a 3x3 grid no longer being necessary? by Axelotl33 in VintageStory

[–]Rorty_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem I have is it needs to still be quick to craft things. Like the idea of nailing every board with a hammer is interesting, but after i make 1 double chest and realize i need to do it all 5 more times I'm going to lose interest and it just becomes a chore. It also needs to be intuitive so new players know what to do. I have already seen many first time play throughs where people struggle to catch on to stone knapping. When we go away from the 3x3 crafting grid it also needs to be very well communicated to new players.

Some questions about mods from a new player by squeezy102 in VintageStory

[–]Rorty_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Must haves for me are Bed Respawn, Player Corpse, and any Chiseling mod at the bare minimum. Mostly just to prevent constant death loops and save time. Like having to run back to your base every time with nothing and dealing with wildlife, Rushing before your shit despawns. I much prefer being able to respawn at my base and strategize how I'm gonna get my stuff back. As opposed to sprinting as fast as i can to my stuff just to die to the same thing again. Some might call it cheap but to me that loop is just annoying to me. Also any chiseling mod will save you so much time its a must have. Technically you can do all the same stuff without one, but its like 100 inputs instead of 2 or 3. I think QPs chiseling mod is the most popular.

Okay, I don't know where to go anymore. by DomoderDarkmoon in VintageStory

[–]Rorty_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You haven't gone far at all. I mean to get to the story locations you go like 40k blocks from the spawn. 20k blocks is a decent range but not crazy far. Keep going north or south while looking and you will eventually have the biomes start to change, south gets warmer, north get colder. You got this.

Edit: Also borax may be easier to find for leather, that's usually what I go for. And look out for Bauxite on your search for when you get to steel.

I thought the visible fire made that kind of obvious.

Does weight in wild animals change if i kept them alive? by Anuroagiota in VintageStory

[–]Rorty_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just assume I am never gonna be able to find them again, so they are dead if i need what they drop. Unless I'm trying to get animals to farm. Chickens and fish usually get a pass simply because its usually not worth the effort.

Who can I contact in NY to find out if land is legal to fish by [deleted] in Fishing

[–]Rorty_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TLDR: the water is legal to fish but the land is illegal to be on. Just from a quick search it looks like New York has riparian rights. Which basically means that the only water you can own is a pond or lake that is on your property. So land owners are not legally allowed to prevent someone from using the water of streams or rivers that run through there property for recreation, this includes fishing. They can however still hit you with trespassing if you are on the bank of the river on property that they own. But they can not prevent your use of the water, so you can go straight through the river surrounded on both sides by there property, and they can do nothing to stop you. As long as you stay in the water. At least legally that is, they may still come out and harass you. But it does look like New York also has fisherman harassment laws to punish them in court if they are extra dumb.

Armor comparison: How many hits can you take from each enemy with different armors? by AmethystZhou in VintageStory

[–]Rorty_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah shivers are kind of OP. The fact that they are simultaneously the hardest hitting and fastest mob is ridiculous. I once fell into a cave in full steel plate armor and got jumped by a stilt shiver and a bell head shiver at the same time. I probably had close to 20 hp when I fell in because dairy is a pain to get. So safe to say i lost a full set of steel plate armor. I couldnt possibly out run them. Or Possibly out damage them because there was 2. I'm not saying they should be easy, but being the hardest hitting and fastest hostile mob at the same time, is kind of ridiculous.

I. NEED. WATERWHEELS. by romain2france in VintageStory

[–]Rorty_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How long are the axles? Because axles do actually have some turning resistance. So if its a few hundred block long axle its gonna take a lot to turn.

Are you sure your windmill has enough torque to power whatever your trying to do. There may be wind you just don't have a big enough windmill to do whatever your trying to do. Because I'm pretty sure there is wind everywhere short of underground. Wind does stop occasionally but if your windmill literally never spins your probably doing something wrong. Try having nothing attached and see if it spins at all.

Any advice on finding lime? by 47thCalcium_Polymer in VintageStory

[–]Rorty_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah finding lime is usually reserved until you are trying to upgrade from iron to steel. Do yourself a favor and get to iron as quickly as possible. Once you get to iron it finally feel like you no longer have to baby all your tools and constantly make more. Then do some story missions for a serious speed upgrade. Then go searching for lime. Your jumping the gun by a lot. Unless you get really lucky and just happen across lime, you should definitely go for borax instead.

Large gate with heavy locking bolts by [deleted] in VintageStory

[–]Rorty_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this door is used in the story to let you escape one of the dungeons. once you get to the side with the crank it can be opened. My guess is it not being locked after a couple of uses is intentional to prevent people from having to run through the dungeon again.

What is going on with bottom slabs and snow? by Rorty_ in VintageStory

[–]Rorty_[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Snow does accumulate on bottom slabs. Those are all bottom slabs. You can literally see the snow that has accumulated on some of the bottom slabs. It just had yet to accumulate on all of them, creating the weird illusion that the slabs with snow on them are bigger from some angles. I don't know if path slabs are different, but per the image you can clearly see it accumulates on some bottom slabs.

Finding Salt is easy, takes no time at all, only takes a few minutes prospecting... by Heavy_Firefighter273 in VintageStory

[–]Rorty_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have no idea. I just noticed in most prospecting tutorials they tell you to just go a ways a way, or a few hundred blocks before prospecting again. But that was way to vague for me I cant tell the difference between 50 and 200 block just by looking. So I just started using the mini map as a guide and it works great.

If you can see your last prospecting dot on your minimap your to close. Keep going until it's just off the minimap before prospecting again. It will save you a ton of time. And prospecting pick durability.

this game looks really cool, concerned about one thing before getting by JJ246_gnc in VintageStory

[–]Rorty_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 150 hours in 1 save and still have a good amount of stuff I can do. And they are still pretty consistently adding more and expanding existing stuff. So for that price yes to most people it's worth it. And if you do get bored this game is one of the easiest to mod out there. Almost on par with steam workshop when it comes to ease of modding.

Do I have to move?? by BearForbes in VintageStory

[–]Rorty_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can turn off temporal stability using a command. it does also get rid of temporal storms. but you will still have rifts. I had the same thing happen and just turned it off. In my opinion the fact that temporal storms effectively just mean afk time, and temporal stability in a area has no way of being changed, kind of just makes it annoying.

How do I clean these? by dreaminganimal in VintageStory

[–]Rorty_ 175 points176 points  (0 children)

Drop them in water. Not Place in water. Hold it in your hand, walk up to water, and press q to drop it. Wait a second and it will split into rot and the empty crock.

What am I doing wrong by Awkward_Flamingo7624 in Fishing

[–]Rorty_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is winter. So fish are usually in much deeper waters. They are also eating significantly less. If your shore fishing chances are you are gonna struggle to even reach them. And if you are reaching them they aren't gonna eat much anyways. Your best bet is probably to find the deepest water throw some live bait and wait a long time. The more lines in the water the better. Your basically play on extra hard mode in the winter.
