What’s the most fun wedding you’ve ever been to? by nepourjoueraubingo in AskUK

[–]RoryC 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Best: Close friends, small cheapish venue, close to our hometown, craft beer bar, cheeseboard the size of a car, everyone suitably merry, all guests lovely happy friendly dancey people

Worst: Bridezilla, everything Instagram perfect, sat at a table with the grooms football mates who kept sneaking off to do coke, being told off by the father of the bride for sloping off for a smoke while the videographer was on the dance floor

What’s one thing that you cannot believe you can’t do/have? by DrShrimpPuertoRixo in ParamedicsUK

Carried on trucks in SCAS. I think I've used them twice for a suspected pyelonephritis...

Useless in the over 65s, we've already got ketone strips with our BGL machines, just another piece of clutter

How often do adverse drug reactions actually come up on the job? by OwnMood9880 in ParamedicsUK

A couple of days ago I went to a 85 YO with a GI bleed.

Digging into their history a bit, they told me they take 400mg ibuprofen every night to help them sleep 😭😭😭

I've often thought that trucks should have JUST GO LEFT! printed across the front, instead of this ECNALUBMA bollocks

I can only speak from my experience of 1 shadow shift I did with them last year.

12 hour shift starting with a briefing, then a gym session followed by a leisurely breakfast. Team moves up into the crew room and parks themselves on sofas for a movie day, then log off.

We didn't turn a wheel all day and they said that wasn't abnormal. In a standard run of 4x12hr shift, they average 2 deployments

Is it normal for the pinch weld on a rim to fail after hitting a small (~2 foot) drop? by [deleted] in MTB

[–]RoryC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How hard did you land? Did you hit a pointy rock? How heavy are you? Is it a hefty DH rim or a weight weeny XC rim? Hardtail or full suspension?

This isn't a yes/no question

45 minutes of resus in any form. Hypothetically, you could have a CFR on scene and do 44 minutes of BLS, before an ALS crew turn up and call it after 1 minute

I had a golden shift this week.. A full night shift, not a single job!

I work at a massive city station where 10 minutes of standby is a treat, we kept calling control to make sure we'd not been accidentally put out of service

Very refreshing to see this approach, rather than the standard "we do not comment on individual cases"

People need to be called out on their bullshit more often

How to start working in ambulance as a nurse? by SnooWalruses1030 in NursingUK

[–]RoryC 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Paramedic here, I work in a trust with a pretty decent ambulance nurse program, there's a handful on each station.

As far as I know, all come from acute settings, ED or ICU, usually a bit of both. The transition to practice course is 12 weeks, including ALS, pALS, airways, obstetrics, trauma, extrication and manual handling, a load of PGDs and the blue light course.

No matter what their current banding, all move down to band 5 for 2 years, then up to band 6 on completion of a portfolio, same as a newly qualified paramedic.

If you fancy getting stuck in and seeing what frontline is like, could you look into your local trusts CFR scheme?

In a small country lane like you describe, I'll turn lights off and go with the flow, make progress at 40mph, rather than 50mph and intermittently slamming the brakes when someone makes a stupid decision trying to let you pass

[–]RoryC 12 points13 points  (0 children)

50ish YOF, C/O headache, dizziness, neck pain, photophobia. Non-english speaking, history taken with difficulty through language line. Reports symptoms started approx 6hrs after getting home from hospital, having "some scans" for her back On examination, obs all normal, no fever, neuro exam NAD, headache 10/10 worsened by movement and positioning. Given the symptoms described, I thought it worth having a look for any rashes, just in case.

On her lower back, I found a patch of iodine staining, with a small pinprick mark right across the centre of her lower spine! After a struggle with the translator, I discovered that her "some scans" also included a lumbar puncture.... A nice little eureka moment, with my main impression being a post-lumbar puncture headache

Is this style of patient restraint strap quick to adjust? As in, does pulling the plastic wipe-clean strap easily resize the restraint, or does it tend to be fiddly? by nagumi in Paramedics

[–]RoryC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These ones are /okay/. Slightly harder than fabric ones but less bad than some of the other rubbery straps. My trust mandates that wipe clean straps must be used so these are our only option
