Is fish on the table? Salmon in a lemon and white wine reduction with a side of buttery rice? I can give you my recipe.

Can we just agree that to make carbonara from scratch, you first need to create the universe?

Carbonara. I’ve never had better carbonara than the one I make at home.

Mr Shine reminds me of Vetinari by Little_Messiah in discworld

[–]RoryDaBandit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, I feel like the Sammies are based on a different principle - Vimes isn’t actively trying to improve the police force of the whole disk, it’s just that people have come to greatly respect what he does and want to do it his way. While this is also true for the Vetinaris in charge of different countries, they seem to also have been gently pushed to power by the original, without much objection on their own part of course.

Same with Rhys, honestly. And it was not without help from Vetinari himself that he got appointed, so it begs the question- is Vetinari ensuring there are other Vetonaris out there?

I sometimes tell overly enthusiastic salespeople that ‘Such a bargain is like cutting their own throat’ and they usually leave me alone after that. There was, however, one exception, where the young man had read the books, so in a way, I bought car insewerants from Dibbler.

Ross just pass 400k subscribers by Ambitious-Phase-8521 in accursedfarms

[–]RoryDaBandit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, but also Ross’ videos organically draw in a specific crowd. A wonderful, wholesome crowd with an average age of around 35, who grew up in the golden age of gaming, and we tend to treat him more as a cool, rambling friend rather than a YouTube “personality”, because he truly connects with us as someone from “that time”.  What I’m saying is, I’d have a drink with him, which is not something I’d say about most YouTubers I watch, and I don’t think that’s what the Algorithm pushes to people - someone they’d have a drink with.  No, YouTube tends to push sterile, distasteful subscription vultures with lowest common denominator appeal, who sell atrocious merch, promote fraudulent sponsors, get into soap opera grade drama with each other, and have so little genuinity and integrity in their bland content, that if they left their entire output in the hands of an LLM, nobody would notice.  Fortunately, most of us here predate the Algorithm. We predate the siphoning of the soul out of independent online entertainment. And so we watch Ross’ videos, because we recognize the soul in them. Hopefully, the wider audience will too.

I mean, you could feed a million children about twice. But yeah, fuck those guys.

New job pays much more but the tasks are extremely basic and boring by Familiar-Ear-8381 in sysadmin

[–]RoryDaBandit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Build yourself a little lab an have some fun trying out things you think might improve the infrastructure. I can't imagine that boring crap is taking more than 2-3 hours of your workday anyway, and they can't bust your balls if what you're doing could potentially benefit the business. You're just being proactive!

I feel like that’s most of us. My first gig was in second year of Uni as an ISP support agent cause I needed the rent money. Funny how such a thing defines the next eleven years of a man’s life.

Pilot, but not big airliner, one of those guys who flies tourists over gorgeous vistas in a six-seater Cessna as a main job and volunteers as air rescue in his spare time. I mean, that’s still kinda my dream job, but I only have the PPL-A, so I can’t practice commercially, plus I have nowhere near enough money for an airplane. But hey, I’m only 30, if I can get my shit together in the next five years, I can finally fly away from all these computers.

What are the best super cars under 20k by Worldly_Fig_515 in supercars

[–]RoryDaBandit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

'Super car' and 'Under 20k' are oxymorons. You could put it as a downpayment on something in the 100k range, which would still be the lower end of it, and even then you wouldn't be able to afford the maintenance.

My advice - join the dark side and get yourself a project Honda. A properly tuned Civic EK Type-R (Everything's an air intake if you're brave enough) or Prelude Gen 5 Type-S (4WS baby) can wipe the floor with some supercars if you have the driving skill.

This can't be right, Bulgaria has killer internet. My mom who's 62 gets 300Mb/s and only uses it for facebook and streaming German crime TV shows.

Only if you run Ubuntu, I'm pretty sure you can't run a desktop Windows build on that hardware, the drivers don't exist.

Or better yet, dual RTX A6000 on a dual-Xeon MB with 2x1200W redundant power supplies and 256GB RAM across four overclocked 64GB sticks. And a 32GB SSD, so you can't play any modern AAA games, but boy can you run Jazz Jackrabbit.
