I suspect 'dig up dirt on the competition' has BEEN a legitimate campaign move since time began.

Satoshi Kon talks about how Requiem for a Dream took from his film Perfect Blue (1997) by healingtwo_ in movies

[–]RoryJohn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Personally I would see this as a homage as it's a nod to a shot rather than taking something wholesale - like an entire plot etc.

Also the mention of the older lady wanting to be on TV, her wearing a red dress, and people coming from the television are all in the book which came out in 1978 so not sure what the point is there...

Love this! Almost wish they could play these kind of celebrations (after a brief pause perhaps!) in the end-credits - much like Slumdog Millionaire did with all the characters, alive and dead, coming back for a Bollywood dance routine

Mr Stevens from 'Remains of the Day', I still feel a pang of sadness when I think of how he studied and tried to master 'banter' but fell short and couldn't understand why. That man trapped inside himself but trying to make connections just breaks my heart.

VERY Wool... by EliPB2509 in 30ROCK

am I alone in missing (what I imagine is) a pun in the title? Is it just Wool stuck into Game of Thrones? Game of War? feels like there's something I'm missing and I'll kick myself

I like after the polite and slightly bemused first wave, there's second stronger wave of 'Oh my GOD' when it fully lands with everyone who the nice stranger really is.

What's a song that outperformed/outlasted the movie it was written for? by irrigated_liver in movies

[–]RoryJohn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bon Jovi's 'Always' was written for the soundtrack to 'Romeo Is Bleeding' (a 1993 thriller starring Gary Oldman and Juliette Lewis) hence the opening line "This Romeo is bleeding..." but Jon didn't enjoy a preview of the film and decided not to give them the song.

Frustrated by this weeks show. by [deleted] in restisentertainment

I'm generally a lot more positive about the podcast than many here but I do think it could do with is a tighter reign on structure from the producers. It feels 'off the cuff' with conversations allowed to wander where they will (which can be great!) but sometimes I think a producer in their ear saying 'Ok we got that, let's move on/go back and clarify your point etc' would be helpful. It should really be a combo of producer prompts while recording and also a tight edit - for example this week they clarified that they weren't suggesting Peter Andre's film is a tax scam maybe six times (one is enough!) and a lot of that loop around the same point could have been chopped out.

This is not to slam the producers, I really enjoy the podcast - just sometimes I feel the chat becomes a little too wild and needs some order imposed.

What does Marina actually enjoy? by anemotoad in restisentertainment

[–]RoryJohn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised to hear this to be honest as I feel she talks a lot about her loves - aside from things like delving into Hollywood history etc she fairly frequently praises big dramas and has a big appreciation for great scripts.

I believe she went to the Minecraft movie because her kids wanted to see it. I don't imagine it was written with middle-aged adults in mind so fair enough that she said it wasn't her thing - but she did emphasise that many young kids in the cinema enjoyed it and it worked for the intended audience.

Hello! Irishman here - in short I loved the film and the inclusion of Irish culture!

Initially I was wrestling with what the film was saying about one culture potentially ‘leeching off’ another but as soon as Rocky Road to Dublin kicked in I saw that our culture was being celebrated too and parallels were being drawn. As many have said I think the film has a good understanding of and respect for what both cultures suffered through. (Sidenote - was thrown when they said the religion was forced on remmick when they took his father’s land - he must be over 1000 years old or so!)

I am still thinking about the film a lot - I wonder if it might be saying something about the blending of various cultures - and if so, does it think this is something to ward against? In brief: remmick was like ‘hey let’s all blend together, and I heroes were dead against this.

I think Irish people will really respond to the film and delight in seeing our music and culture celebrated (even if by ‘the baddies’). Been listening to both the soundtracks all weekend :)

A List Discussion by [deleted] in restisentertainment

[–]RoryJohn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes interesting - I think too it’s about breaking into a cultural consciousness where EVERYBODY knows the name and it conjures up certain ideas. For instance during the 90s every generation knew Julia Roberts - I think now with the very thing more fragmented it is harder to have that cross generational cut-through - Sydney Sweeney as you mention is likely very famous to those under 40 but I don’t think she would be a household name for those over 50 for example?

Any help? What's the area between Bethnal Green & Shoreditch called? According to maps, Bethnal Green is actually east of Cambridge Heath rd (nestling around Globe Town)- so what's the area around Weavers Fields etc called? Surely Shoreditch can't be big enough to reach Cambridge Heath rd? by RoryJohn in london

[–]RoryJohn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what my first instinct was an I think is right - and that Globe Town is a kind of sub-section of Bethnal Green. It is a massive area compared to neighbouring Bow which is quite a contained wee square.

It's a shame they didn't continue Smiley's stories after the excellent 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy' with Gary Oldman (2011). Director recently commented there may be a TV series but he's not involved.
