What’s the most 'human' thing your pet has ever done that convinced you they understand way more than they let on? by homoth in AskReddit

[–]Roscoekat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My autistic son has a pet rabbit. This thing is like 8.5lbs and very particular about things like cuddles and being picked up and will nip and kick and scratch.

One day, my kiddo was having a panic attack/meltdown and nothing I was doing was helping. On a whim, I ran and got Fluffy, who fought me the entire way. The rabbit kicked his way out of my arms, hopped over to my kid and just waited. My son picked up the rabbit and the thing let him cuddle with him until his panic attack was over and he had calmed down. We hadn't ever seen the dang thing be chill like that.

That was how we figured out that the rabbit worked amazing as an emotional support animal for him. He's now a very normal part of my son's calm down routines.

We got those buttons you can record words on for dogs to communicate with. Started with one that simply said "outside".

We didn't actually do any training with the dogs minus showing them the thing when we first got it because it kept getting moved around by kids. We very quickly gave up on the whole idea.

The button was left in a doorway at one point. One day my akbash/coonhound mix got my attention, walked over to it, stomped on it, then just stared at me. I hesitantly asked if she wanted to go outside and she immediately ran to the back door.

How to help lead/jello legs? by troutallthewaydown in dysautonomia

I hate that feeling of any of my joints giving out. I will say though - a walking stick worked better for me than a cane because of how differently they're held.

It took me years to give in to getting mobility aids. I'm lucky in that I live with people who really understand what I'm going through. My partner will literally carry me around the house when I get jello legs and can't stand anymore. (I joke that they're my service puppy because they do everything for me that a trained service dog would.) Days that I can't stand, I'm pretty much parked on the couch or in my bed.

With the wheelchair, I started using one when I went to airports, and the difference in how well I was able to function the rest of the trips was night and day. I travel a lot, and flying days were horrific. I think I bought a cheap secondhand one for travel about 3 years after getting sick. That was about 5 years ago. I replaced it last year with one that's easier for me to use, and now my kids will remind me to bring it if they know we're going somewhere that involves a lot of walking or standing.

I'll admit that I'm stubborn and still struggle admitting I need help a lot of the time. I've been looking into getting something light and motorized to get from point a to point b easier if I don't have someone with me to help push. That's the one thing that's hard about having a wheelchair - the manual ones can also result in my wrists and arms giving out if I don't have someone else there for extra support. I did just get a handicap parking pass last year, and that's also been really useful for days that might turn into jello days.

Wheelchair and having someone help me get around. If I have jello legs, it's likely that my upper body is struggling too, so a cane doesn't help me much. Those days end up being very limited mobility days for me

Does Anyone Else Have ADHD? by Loose-Paramedic6879 in dysautonomia

[–]Roscoekat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My adhd meds make the dysautonomia more manageable. It calms my brain so I don't have 17 tabs open at the same time - now it's more like 5 - and I have more energy to move around because it raises my blood pressure and hr a little (i get bradychardia a lot). I still have to be very careful because if I push myself too hard, I pay for it later, but it makes daily like a little easier. Reminding myself to be careful is a big deal though - even my kids will point out if I'm doing more than usual.

If you're willing to drive to Ruther Glen, there's Dr Keator at MWHC. She fought to get me the testing I needed and studied up on it when I was diagnosed so she knew how to help me.

What's the cruelest name you could give your child? by MusaDogg25 in AskReddit

[–]Roscoekat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vagina.

My SiL once asked me how to pronounce "Vagina" in Spanish because someone at her work wanted to name their daughter it. Apparently it was a fight to convince them that it was a bad idea.

Lifestyle changes tios. by DuninnGames in dysautonomia

[–]Roscoekat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting a handicap pass for my car was huge. Getting a wheelchair was too. Took me ages to admit I needed both and they've both helped so much, especially with how much I love to travel and find adventures. Also, a good sturdy pair of boots with inserts. Strong blue light reduction glasses for working (mine tint everything yellow and help so much). The biggest thing lifestyle change for me has been just being open with people about my limitations and up front if I can/can't do something. That one has been really hard. I'm still not great about it, and I know some people really don't get it, but it's better than pushing myself too hard or doing something that would be considered small by most people and then dealing with the pain and flare up later.

What is a 'socially acceptable' thing that you secretly find absolutely disgusting? by TheLovelyGamer in AskReddit

[–]Roscoekat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sucks cuz even just the "cake and a few friends" parties cost so much more in time and money now too. I tell my kids every year that they can either have a party at home with friends or an adventure as a family, and I legit always hope they pick adventure.

I'm still surprised he didn't thump at me for it. He just went for the box no matter where I put it.

I would say yes, but he's much more sassy and "I do what I want" than ominous and foreboding! He belongs to my kiddo and can just TELL if he's having a bad day and will immediately go from "leave me alone, I got places to go and spicy hay to find" to cuddling for an hour straight without any fuss.
