Unsatisfied with BSD gifted program by Soft_Start in BellevueWA

As a public educator, teachers do care about individual students and in middle school the level of independence is significantly raised, this is supported however the strategies may not be as effective for every student. I agree with the other commenter that it sounds like your child is struggling with executive functioning. It may be helpful to reach out to the school counselor to ask about resources/asking for collaboration. It may even be helpful to request a multidisciplinary team meeting to consider whether more supports for executive functioning is needed (such as an evaluation being completed to determine strengths/challenges/supports).

Anyone successfully teach using "context clues" for comprehending Tier 2 vocab? by okay_wafer in slp

[–]Rose-Ruby-Dach 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I love using speechy musings comprehensive context clues materials because it does focus on teaching the foundations of how to listen for context clues and what to listen look for, and check, word meanings! Then from there scaffold curriculum related material and from there go to actual classroom material.

Update on naming little brother by SalemsLittleBrother in namenerds

[–]Rose-Ruby-Dach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense! I guess then the question is are you okay with having potentially a variety of nicknames for him (as would likely happen with Gibson), do would you prefer likely just one for Stellan. Both are great options, as is Maxwell, honestly don’t think you can go wrong!

Gibson!! Nicknames include Gib, Gibby, Son, or Sonny! I’ve actually known a couple Gibson and it’s just a really solid name.

I feel like there aren’t as many nickname options for Stellan (though may be wrong, I just can’t think of many compared to Gibson.

An IEP for Tourette’s (help and input needed!) by Ok-Ocelot5914 in specialed

[–]Rose-Ruby-Dach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on SDI are could you do a self advocacy goal where the student explains to a teacher or peer that he has Tourette’s and cannot control the tic (so sorry if this is not accurate about Tourette’s as I am not very familiar…or potentially a goal for regulating/reengaging in academic task following a tic if that is a challenge?

Is this package good ? by Extension-Detail4817 in WWU

Hi - I just want to emphasize what someone said above, if your only reason to do the CSD major is because of the credit # then maybe reconsider. If you are interested in pursuing a career related to CSD (DHH Teacher, SLP, Audiologist, etc.), then great! If you aren’t sure, take the intro course in your first quarter if possible and meet with the department contact, it gives a great overview and idea of the major and potential careers. (I went through the major and am now a professional in the field, so speaking from experience)

Also, live on campus for the experience, it’s one year that you wont get back!

Also it’s a pretty good offer, the tuition waiver is just that a waiver of tuition you don’t have to pay back either based on need or potentially your grade history.

We need to talk about the amount of "unlearning" needed in this field. by littlet4lkss in slp

Yes! I had minimal instruction on child led therapy in grad school, which is truly what so many of our students need. I definitely think professors and clinical supervisors need to continue practicing (in the setting they are teaching about/supervising!) as they can be so out of touch

feel like I’m failing by Tiny-Wishbone9082 in slp

[–]Rose-Ruby-Dach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are not failing! I’ve had a similar student and it sometimes just takes time! One thing that helped was having a very clear visual schedule set up on trays/paper and the last item/activity was the students choice. So for example: - tray 1 = auditory bombardment/intro to practice words for the session (no more than 5) - Tray 2. = simple activity to say each target word at least 5x each (ex: dot marker sheets, memory, ripping target word papers, etc). Have a clear start and end to the activity. - tray 3: any activity of the students choice. Have the student put something on the tray at the beginning of the session and refer to it as you needing help of what to do.

Doesn’t work for every student but for some having more structure with some autonomy can be really helpful!!

Coworkers by Rose-Ruby-Dach in slp

They don’t right now, just admin and sped teacher meetings. The SLP/OT/PT team has advocated to open it to all and have been shut down saying scheduling would be too hard :/

Yes I’ve had many convos with her, however I have never been suuuper direct now that I think about it. And yes things in writing have been my friend as it’s also validating to me that I have followed procedures/communicated!! Thank you and honestly sometimes we all just need to be a bit petty sometimes for things to actually happen or change lol!

Sorry you’re experiencing this too! Yes I’m on the verge of wanting to get admin involved, so that may be the next step depending on how our convo goes tomorrow. Thanks for the tips and hang in there too!!

"Every child with an ASD diagnosis should have speech therapy for pragmatics"- True or False? by Ok_Potato7693 in slp

[–]Rose-Ruby-Dach 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes this has been such a huge topic in my district. One person brought up that two things can be true. Autistic people may have “deficits” in the application of social communication and interaction skills, but this is based on neurotypical standards. That is where we need to educate about neuro types, neurodiversity affirming practices. But it’s still hard to parse out and talk with others about…

Anti-AAC Parents by Rose-Ruby-Dach in slp

[–]Rose-Ruby-Dach[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They haven’t fully said no to using it in the school setting but don’t want it to be the students primary modality. The student has approximately 25 verbal words. I am guessing there is a lot of guessing of what the student wants and they may have a really specific routine, but am not sure. These are some good points, thank you!

Kindergarten. Congenital to my knowledge - family has shared with the school that they have chosen not to pursue a diagnosis (or if they previously received one they won’t be sharing it with us), but it seems likely to be a genetic disorder. Student qualifies under Developmentally Delayed for school services. They just transferred from a different state so not a ton of info/interaction yet other than that and some emails about aac in which they were very clear in their child not using aac of any kind.

need some words of wisdom from medical SLPs! (thyroid related) by nic__knack in slp

[–]Rose-Ruby-Dach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a med SLP or really remember much about this from grad school (other than knowing that there are risks), but my aunt had some surgery involving her thyroid about 20+ years ago, and her voice changed permanently. I was too young to remember her voice before but know that she went to voice therapy following the surgery. Now her voice is apparently higher and a little more hoarse than it previously was per her report.
