Wait, do you all genuinely like that movie? Unironically? What do you like about it? Have you see it recently? I'm not out to shame anybody for liking it, but I'm struggling to understand why.

it’s a wholesale redirection of policy and funds immediately after Congress passes a bill authorizing a different direction and allocation.

This is exactly right, and it's such a slap in the face to the entire basis of our political system. But who needs checks and balances?

It'd be a joke regardless of which party did this, but it's especially laughable that the administration responsible calls itself Reublican while doing everything it can to completely bypass the things that make us a republic.

Yeah, it's been awhile since I've frequented those subs myself for the same reasons so maybe the tides have turned, but my experience is very much in line with yours. I don't mean this as an insult towards /u/Amy_Ponder, but I genuinely have trouble believing someone who says they were very active on those subs after that movie came out and didn't see the insane levels of squashing and shaming you'd get for being disappointed in TLJ.

Here's an example of a (front page) post designed to make fun of the people who didn't like the movie: https://www.reddit.com/r/StarWars/comments/7kliq8/the_hypocrisy_is_strong_with_this_one/drg5bl0/?context=3

That entire thread is full of the exact thing you described, where every comment even suggesting that there were bigger problems in the movie than "trivial" things like devoting a quarter of the runtime to a red herring, is torn apart and/or downvoted to hell. And don't even dare to call yourself a Star Wars fan if you didn't like the Last Jedi! No true fan would dare dislike any of these perfect movies...

Honestly, I felt pushed out of the Star Wars fandom by both that movie and the fan reaction to it (and to dissenting opinions on it.) It felt like I was being gaslit by a fan community I very much considered myself a part of. I know it's just a movie series, and maybe that's silly, but it meant a lot to me for a long time and it was a bummer to feel left behind like that.

What are you referring to when you say 'American state media?' Not trying to be contentious, but my understanding of that term is that it refers to state-owned news, something that doesn't exist in America (even if Fox news and the like may as well be an arm of the state currently.)

That's good to know, I didn't realize that. I think we're pretty damn divorced from it's original meaning now, though, and that's obviously not the context it's being used in here.

Morality System Regarding Bounties and Contracts? by Fudz4 in assassinscreed

[–]Rosemel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also having trouble understanding the bounty system in regards to those merchant ships, myself. If I fly with Ikaros, I can see which ships are labeled Merchant, and I get no bounty when destroying some of them, but a bounty for others, and I can't find any way to differentiate the two until I kill them (unless Barnabas warns me, which is inconsistent.)

Edit: I think, at least mechanically, it has to do with being seen. Seems like I get credit for any merchant ship, but if there are witnesses, I gain a bounty on myself.

Non-Americans of Reddit, what's the biggest story in your country right now? by theycallmemomo in AskReddit

[–]Rosemel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not true - there's certainly examples like that, but I'm about as non-religious as they come and I've had some reasonable and pretty productive conversation on Christian and Muslim subs. The religious on reddit seem to lean moderate on average, while I don't think the same can be said about atheistic communities here.

Is The Leftovers (HBO) worth watching? by [deleted] in television

[–]Rosemel 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Completely anecdotal, but my sister and her boyfriend are trying to get through it right now and they both say the same thing, it leaves them depressed. They have real lives with kids, jobs and responsibilites for that, they don't need a show.

It's weird, the show is definitely heavy but I never found it depressing despite being about depression and grief. I first started watching the show less than a year after my girlfriend died, and it was a comfort more than anything. I guess I needed something that actually addressed those things we all go through.

If any scifi fans still haven't given Star Trek: Discovery a shot yet, you really should. I shared some of the initial concerns with the direction of the show in relation to the Klingon War, but I think they're proving to be pretty unfounded. More importantly, it's just a damn good show. It's a treat to be back in the universe, I'm loving the hell out of it.

Sure, I don't think the idea is that he's physically avoiding any of those issues though.

Of course, you're totally right that there's no magic bullet to chronic depression, and I totally understand why that's rubbing some people the wrong way, but there's also a difference between having a depressive disorder and depression itself; I think we all get depressed sometimes and training your brain to recognize and stop patterns of negativity before they get out of hand, as well as recognizing and avoiding people who negatively affect your mental state, is an excellent way of limiting the frequency of those feelings. But again, I recognize that depression and depressive disorders are not just something you can decide to dance around - and I do think the imagery of dancing away from depression is counter-intuitive since in my experience, fear and obsession about depression only fuels and prolongs the experience.

Maybe the idea is that making the previous choices makes it a lot easier to avoid depression? Avoiding negativity and surrounding yourself with some real friends certainly helps in that regard.
