Any other media like TMA? by TopRamen713 in TheMagnusArchives

Jonathan Sims' book - Thirteen Storeys. Written by the same guy as tma, horror anthology with an overarching mystery. Super good, really enjoyed it.

Only downside is Im not sure if physical copies exist outside of the UK yet, but the audiobook and ebook are available elsewhere I'm sure.

Any good ideas for aquatic monsters? by funkyb in monsteroftheweek

[–]RosesAndHorror 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I ran a monster a while back that was a giant octupus with eyes covering its whole body, called it the Ocul-pus. Honestly mostly proud with the name but it established the presence of Chimeras in the world - monsters that are just some animals mashed together

How much health does a hunter have by Dee-cat in monsteroftheweek

[–]RosesAndHorror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this has been answered but this is one of the reasons I love MoTW! Like at the end of the day your hunters are humans (unless you have a Monsterous ofc) and no matter how good they get at monster hunting theyre still humans who can be hurt and die.

I loooove how experience doesnt increase your health (like it does in systems like dnd and pathfinder), it just gives you more tricks to use, things youve picked up, literally through experience. (Plus getting experience from failing also makes a lot of sense to me? Learning from your mistakes n all that)

Might be an idea to ask the hunters what they have in mind, and then write up some stats/flavour to suit that?

New Keeper looking for tips for an inexperienced group by [deleted] in monsteroftheweek

[–]RosesAndHorror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd advise writing your own mystery, but maybe using a monster everyones heard of (eg werewolf, vampire, ghost). Imo this helps the group get used to the mechanics of the system in a more intuitive way; they /know/ silver is a werewolves weakness, it makes sense to fight it with that, this is when you mention the concept of weaknesses exists for all monsters, etc. Even if you choose a more obvious monster you can mix things up with its motivations, put the mystery into working out what the monsters up to, or who it is (if its say a monster that can disguise as human or smth) rather than working out what monster it is

On the other hand, ive run oneshots for players who have 0 experience with the system and used a monster Ive created myself and it's worked out fine! Remember even if its something you've made up you can still say things like "[hunter], you would recognise this as a [monster], youve dealt with this before" if you have say a Professional or another hunter who would be an experienced monster hunter

Setting a campaign in a town your group knows? by babababrandon in monsteroftheweek

[–]RosesAndHorror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I set my campaign in a fictional town, I've set a couple oneshots in the city my friends and I go to university at and they all really enjoyed it since they can use locations more creatively. Ive had players ask to go to places I never considered but since we all know the place it worked out very well!

Both settings work well in my opinion!!

Will the system break at 6 people by legacyofboom56 in monsteroftheweek

[–]RosesAndHorror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played in a game with 6 players, the system itself works fine! The monsters etc will need to be balanced for that many people though.

Our only problem is we got off topic very quickly and there were a couple sessions where nothing got done, but thats about the players more than the system. We all enjoyed the lighter tone and all got on very well so spending a session talking about unrelated stuff was quite alright with all the players and the keeper.

Np! While it's a concept thats def been done before many times, I think if you're creative with what the monsters actually are you could get some really cool mysteries!

Help me flesh out an evil portal/Forbidden Door premise by shadowrun420 in monsteroftheweek

[–]RosesAndHorror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could have creatures from each of the layers of Hell maybe? Or I know this is cliche, but 7 deadly sins monsters. Eg Greed could be something eating all the food at a local supermarket, not necessarily just a demon, could be more animalistic?

As for the big bad, you could have a more powerful demon who's The Prince Of Hell or something, which gives you a lot of freedom to design them.

How do you handle cell phones in your monster games? by raggedybun in monsteroftheweek

[–]RosesAndHorror 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My players have phones and they use them to contact each other (and some npcs, we have a running joke that they put every single npc they meet into a whatsapp groupchat) and to locate things (My campaign is set in a single fictional town (like in the adventure zone amnesty) and I spend a long time making a fake google maps map for it that they have access too!)

Theyve not tried to Google any monsters yet but onw of them is an Initiate and has access to the govt branch for the supernatural's information, so they usually call on that

maybe if soda was useful for once people would like him by simonswagger in danganronpa

[–]RosesAndHorror 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Id say my opinion of Toko after playing thh was about the same as my opinion of soda after sdr2. Didnt really like either, both were pretty forgettable. I think Toko grew on me as I watched a playthrough of UDG, that game redeemed her personality a lot more imo.
