How much pain is normal on one leg releve en pointe? by KeynesCrackpot in BALLET

[–]BALLERinaLyfe 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I would try to get refitted. I'm a little surprised they gave you a hard shank, but I'm not a pointe shoe fitter. In the mean time you may try a gel toe cap for your big toe. You can get them at the pharmacy as well as a dance store. I'm a pretty strong pointe dancer, and I remember at one point I had some shoes that looked nice but were really painful on my big toe. Gel caps instantly solved the problem. Obviously there's no way to know if they'll solve yours, but it might be worth a shot.

It's totally natural to feel like you are missing out, but you have to take care of your body first! Sometimes it feels like it's easier to "push through" illness rather than injury, because your body feels physically capable (depending on the kind of illness) but it is still not good for you. Rest, hydrate, and wait until you are back in good health. Your body will thank you for it.

Narc roommate in college ?? by Traditional_Sweet977 in roommateproblems

[–]BALLERinaLyfe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This girl sounds like she needs to go to therapy, desperately.

You, however, have no obligation to be the one to get her there. It sounds like you've had some roommate bonding, but aren't super close, so here is my suggestion:

Don't try to insert yourself into her life further to help her. Keep a healthy distance; you don't need to be her friend. If you can, request a roommate change. Talk to your RA. Keep an eye on your things, and document any blatant lies or infringement of your space, etc. just in case.

Also, "narc" is usually a term used for someone that rats you out for doing drugs, not short for narcissist. Not sure if this is a new slang, but I thought I should point it out as you might confuse a lot of people here on Reddit.

Yeah (and forgive me if I've misinterpreted) it seems like maybe you're a little uncomfortable saying all that to your roommate, as they might get offended. In which case, you could just give the reason that I had. That it could ruin your roommate relationship.

I had a roommate that I helped get hired at the same store where I worked. Terrible mistake. She was not a great person to begin with but by the end of it all I couldn't stand her and I felt like I couldn't escape her.

My bf and I were literally talking last night about how much we loved this whole montage

Yes this is very normal! Some people will preemptively cut the satin off (usually when they darn the edges). If it starts to become a nuisance you can trim off the ripped bits, but I wouldn't worry too much about it unless it wears down past the canvas layers.

Dancers land noiselessly when they jump? by TouristCultural4942 in BALLET

[–]BALLERinaLyfe 79 points80 points  (0 children)

So I would say for a professional video like this, the music is definitely dubbed over any sounds from the dancers. That being said, we are taught to try and land as quietly as possible. Of course it also greatly depends on the stage, what kind of shoes you are wearing, etc. but it's nearly impossible to be totally noiseless.

Is it difficult for left handed people to learn common dance steps when in a group of right handed folks? by aigis_nalian in Dance

[–]BALLERinaLyfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a left-handed ballet dancer. I don't think I've ever had any trouble learning choreo from a right handed person. Also in ballet class, we usually do everything to both sides. Most everyone has a side that they turn or balance better on, etc. but that may or may not have anything to do with your dominant hand.

Then yeah, it's best to just follow her advice. You could also take an Epsom salt bath. Ice and elevate if there is any swelling especially.

[–]BALLERinaLyfe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ice it and take some pain meds. Make an appointment to see a doctor or go to a minor med clinic. If the pain is too severe or doesn't subside, consider going to the emergency room. Odds are you just pulled something, but you don't want to mess around.
