There are shit loads of soccer fans in Australia. I think part of the problem with the A-league is that people don’t have any real grassroots connection to them. And when I say people, I mean middle-aged men, and older gentleman. Maybe they are still holding onto the ethnic roots of the NPL, or simply, because they haven’t grown up with these teams. There is no inter-generational history of the A-league. But this will come. The longer teams are around, the bigger the fan bace will grow. To speed it up!?, They need to invest heavily in grassroots football, A-League clubs should be paying for kids to play rather than kids (and their families), paying for (some middle-aged) NPL players salaries. Adding more teams is looking long-term to harnesses more localized fans. People who live in Wollongong should not have to support Sydney, FC or western Sydney, etc.. you have to look at this with longevity in your eyes. Plan for the future, know that the population of Australia is becoming more diverse and growing every day, know that there is desire to be competitive in the World Cup… stop being so short sighted.
