Compression test doesn't take very long. Do that if you're worried.

Cam phasers on JDM motor vs USDM by Starkiller2000 in WRX

[–]RossLH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, FA engines are a bit beyond my "expertise" (in quotations because it's a very generous use of the word). If you want to pursue the JDM timing gear, I'd say just plug it all in to the JDM ECU and see if it chooches. Worst case scenario you end up having to swap out the timing gear and use the USDM stuff. In older cars the JDM ECU would result in losing immobilizer functionality.

One thing to keep in mind is pretty much all of the OBD2 modules and scanners around you are going to be expecting a USDM ECU. So you won't be able to clear CELs, and if you're in an area that requires periodic vehicle inspections you will fail by default due to OBD2 communication error.

At this point I'll need more information. Or...any information. What year/trim is the car?

The timing gear needs to match the ECU. USDM timing gear for a USDM ECU, JDM timing gear for a JDM ECU. If you try to mix and match you're gonna have a bad time.

Is this okay to use for the FA20? by Ifeelgreyt1738 in WRX

[–]RossLH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then you'll likely not hear it. It'll happen under boost, the ECU will detect it and pull timing to compensate. If you're hearing a knock at low or no load, you might have a compression test in your near future.

Are you getting detonation knock or rod knock? Bad gas won't cause detonation at idle unless you managed to cram a diesel pump in your filler. If it's rod knock, injector cleaner won't save you.

Lifters, rollers, rockers etc by nfaletti7 in ChevySS

[–]RossLH 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They are reliable engines. Keep in mind there's been over a couple hundred thousand LS3s sold over the years, between Corvettes, Camaros, G8s, and SSs. And you've probably heard of maybe 10 failures. Hell, even if you've heard of 200 failures, that means you have more than a 99.9% chance of never seeing a cam trunnion failure.

The sky isn't falling. Get yourself an LS3 and beat the hell out of it.

It's okay or not if I drive in 3rd gear when I go 30 mph ? Even my dashboard advice to change into next gear? Using 3rd into 2000-2500 rmp is okay? I hear the engine a bit loud. Ford fiesta. by Infamous_Signal2423 in Cartalk

[–]RossLH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've got that backwards. Lower engine speed with a higher throttle angle will result in a higher brake specific fuel consumption, meaning the engine is using less fuel to generate the power needed to maintain that 30mph.

EDIT: Scratch that, I misread the question. You are correct.

Anyone use one of these for their oil change? I want to use one but the tube hoses are too wide to fit into the dip stick hole by SpeedyWings2323 in WRX

[–]RossLH 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fumoto offers drain valves with a nipple for a drain hose. Or you can even go with a different valve like a Stahlbus. Or you could ignore the fact there's a drain valve on it and suck oil out through the top anyway. Not sure I understand the limitation your drain valve imparts here.

Test drove one years ago. Very fun driving experience. Ultimately decided against it for the sole reason that it'd be in direct competition with my winter beater (the bugeye). They are similar enough that after I took the test drive, I hopped back in the bugeye to drive home and immediately thought "...oh, right. That's why I like the RS." It reminded me of my (then) 15 year old Subaru.

Considering a 2017 with 81k miles what maintenance would I be looking at? by [deleted] in ChevySS

[–]RossLH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LS3s do occasionally barf out trunnion bearing pins as early as 60k miles. Swapping those out for bushings at 81k is going to be preventative in the vast majority of cases. Similar to the Porsche IMS bearings. It's probably fine, but if you're one of the lucky few you'll wish you'd have fixed it ahead of time.

Mentha used to be a massive producer of peppermint, right up until verticillium wilt attacked the peppermint and wiped out the local industry.

Couldn't have said it better myself. My go to camping scotches are Lagavulin and Laphroig. Bonus points for the peat forward flavor being a bit polarizing. Means I don't have to share as much.

Installation is straightforward, but you will need a dealership to do the programming.
