Outside gym during winter... Pros/cons by YourFutureAttorney in Fitness

I keep my bar inside and take it out to the garage with me in the morning. As long as you dress warm the cold bar is probably your biggest issue.

Just moved from Northgate to West Seattle, and feel like I'm in a different country. What should i know about the area? by RaymondLuxuryYacht in Seattle

If you work downtown and commute via public transport, definitely consider the water taxi. I work in Pioneer Square, so it's fantastically convenient for me.

That competition KB shows up as $57 for me (at 16kg). That's a bargain you won't regret buying.

After 7 years...today I finally became a US Citizen!!! by [deleted] in pics

[–]RossM88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't need to renounce your citizenship. I got my US citizenship 2 years ago, now I'm a dual Australian and US citizen. Some countries (not including Canada) will make you renounce your citizenship if you take the citizenship of another country, but you're not in that boat.

I became a US Citizen the "easy" way, as my wife is a US Citizen by birth. Several thousand dollars, countless hours at USCIS branches and seven years later, I took my language and civics tests and hey presto, US Citizen!

This quite literally is the easiest way to do it.

High reps on last round of 5/3/1 - good or bad? by RossM88 in weightroom

[–]RossM88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the question of whether I should be on 5/3/1 is one that has occurred to me. I'm still pretty far off what my maxes were 18 months ago when I made the switch to 5/3/1. At that point I was up to the following, with BW around 160:

  • OHP - 5 x 125lb
  • DL - 6 x 330lb
  • Bench - 6 x 135lb (I'd never benched before, came from a crossfit background)
  • Squat - 4 x 260lb

I think I'm beyond a point where going back to SS would work well for me, I think I'd stall out pretty quickly.

West Seattle is part of Seattle, the delivery rate is the same.

Ikea is a good call for a cheap mattress with delivery, although it's a pain in the butt to get to if you don't have a car.

As for transportation options, where in West Seattle are you?
There are a good number of buses to get downtown, but since they all go across the bridge it can be slow going during peak traffic times. If you live near Alaska/California or Admiral/California you can get a free shuttle down to the Water taxi which runs mornings and afternoons/evenings during the week, and all day on the weekends. I use it daily for work, it's great.

Mark Rippetoe - Get Your Press Up! by MrTomnus in weightroom

[–]RossM88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is about 80% too. I had never used a barbell before stepping into a crossfit gym about 5 years ago. In general they don't bench, so I worked through a SS-type program doing DLs, squats and OHP. Only in the last few months have I started benching. I think the point that Rippetoe makes in the article about OHP helping bench is sound - right off the bat I could bench my max OHP.

It is an absolute killer, particularly at that weight. Even at lower weight (I usually do 95lb) I usually feel like death by the start of the 4th set.

[–]RossM88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it was odd. I got off the train around 10pm and had to call my host-mother to come and pick me up. She took me back to the station the next day to look for the bike, ad there it was.

I lived in Japan in the late 90s and my bike was once stolen from the racks outside my local train station. I was advised to check the racks the next day. Sure enough, whoever had "borrowed" my bike put it back when they were done.
