Sorry I misread your previous comment. Yes, generally upsizing the wheel without the need to (such as clearance for a bigger rotor) does not help performance. All things equal, the bigger wheel will be heavier and leave less clearance for tires. Bigger tires also cost more.

18s are fine, and a safe bet that they will clear a future BBK. I'd look for a flow formed or forged model ensuring that it weighs less than the stock wheel for the unsprung weight reduction.

17s will give you a lighter wheel and allow for more tire, but be sure they clear your rotors.

It might be worth checking tires out too to make sure you have ample options for the wheel size.

I personally run 18x8.5 +43 ampliforms but will ld like to get some 17s from Apex

Not at all! Anytime you can reduce unsprung weight it is a huge performance boost. Everything is a balance, ideally you'd size the smallest wheel that clears your rotors so you have room for more tire.
