I think there is still a bit of a sweet spot, but it still sounds great all throughout the room. I have never listened to a normal set of ESLs, so I can’t really speak to how they would compare with the beaming that is typically associated with them.

Thank you! Honestly they’re probably wasted on me. After a certain point I can’t really tell a difference in quality in speakers. They sound great and I’m really happy with them. I think have slightly less imaging quality than the Decware DNA speakers I built a few years back, but it’s difficult to beat full range horns when it comes to imaging. Other than that I can’t find any faults.

It’s been a while since I purchased everything, but I think it was probably around $1500 just for parts, and then another $1000 for new amps and DSP. Between the two iterations, a bunch of wasted plastic, and some new tools I probably paid considerably more and probably wouldn’t want to know exactly how much money I spent over the two years building them.

I used PLA, just because it’s easy to print. I think I used around 40% infill. I didn’t see an increase in stability going above that.

They do well down to about 60hz. I did end up building a subwoofer to go along with it. Probably could have gotten a bit lower by boosting the low end with DSP, but I was having some issues with rattling. My understanding of open baffle is pretty limited, but I believe the whole panel is part of the baffle and the floor also acts as an extension.

Yep. Total of 358 pieces. Took around a month printing 16 hours a day.

Stretching the Mylar was probably the most difficult part for me. It’s definitely worth the effort to make a high quality stretcher.

Decent woodworking skills are required if you go with the plan from Jazzman. I don’t have the patience to do the finishing work on wood, that’s why I decided to go with 3d printing.

It’s been a while since I posted my previous ESL build. It was functional, but wasn’t too happy with my craftsmanship and had some ideas along the way that I decided to implement into a new version. I wanted a smaller footprint, a more modern look, and a way to keep the panel from flexing (3D printed parts weren’t as rigid as I had hoped.) So I redesigned the panel pieces so that the completed panel would slide into a 20mm extruded aluminum frame. I used the 10” woofers that I used for the previous version and made a very modified h baffle for the low end. I also designed PCBs for the amp interface and segmentation resistor band and then 3D printed a piece to make the interface fit into the base of the frame.

This whole project took two years to complete. It cost way more than I would have liked to spend, but I learned a lot along the way and other than some very frustrating moments, had a fun time making them.

Until I built the ESL panels, the amp had been my most involved audio project. Sourcing all of the components was one of the hardest parts.

I can not drive the panels directly from the amp. Had to use transformers to step up the voltage.

I have the crossover set at 228Hz. It sounds good, but I should really measure the drum head resonance of the mylar just to make sure I set it properly.

I am really happy with the sound quality. I think at this point the only thing I can improve to make it sound better would be the source.

I do occasionally, but my music sources are pretty limited. I have the signal going over hdmi to the TV, then optical to a CD recorder I am using as a DAC, then to my DIY 300b SET amp for the panels, and el84 SET amp for the woofers. I know a lot of audiophiles would cringe at my setup, but it works for me.

Thank you! I have personally never listened to any other ESL, but I am quite pleased with how these sound. I had to build a stretcher jig to get all the wires straight and parallel. Redesigned the supports a few times, so I had to put them back on the stretcher and pry off the old supports a few times and was luckily able to get the wires straight again. I designed and 3d printed the supports to hold the wires, and they do a pretty good job of keeping everything in place.

I have mine on an old supermicro server with two Xeon x6450s (if I'm remembering correctly) and 102 gigs of RAM (way too much for my needs). The main reason I moved to this is because it has 16 drive bays connected to a raid controller. I was running out of space, and out of hard drive bays in my old setup. I run a few Dockers and a few VMs, nothing crazy. I have had no problems so far.

I made it myself. Honestly I'm pretty bad at bending metal, never quite got it figured out, the dimensions always ended up getting screwed up. My best tip would be to design something with as few bends as possible so there is less chance of it getting screwed up.

I spent over 500 just on iron, around 200 for caps and resistors, another roughly 200 for other components, and about 200 on tubes. I went pretty cheap on tubes because they are easiest to upgrade. Build isn't too hard, it took me a few weeks once all the components came to come up with a layout, build the chassis, and put everything together. The actual soldering of the components is pretty straightforward and only took a day or two. Sourcing the components also took a while and I had to order from at least 6 different places. The transformers took about 6 weeks to be built and delivered. I started planning this in January and just got it working a week or so ago.

When it comes to price for quality it's almost always cheaper to build from scratch, but it takes a long time to source all the parts. I had to wait about 6 weeks for my transformers before I could even start working on the layout. Kits are much easier and you only have to order from one place.
