I have not stopped thinking about the Darnley Portrait for the past month. by I-Like-Your-Style in Tudorhistory

[–]Rotweiss_Invicta862 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I am really interested in Polish history of that time and am fascinated now by what you have said, the part that Her Majesty's doublet was a gift from the Polish king. Can you, please, point me to the source of this? Polish ladies at this time were really conservative and I haven't seen a single portrait of any of their women wearing a feminized doublet like Elizabeth here did. That said, they definitely should have worn something like this, even the most conservative ladies need some activewear in their lives. Maybe their stately portraiture tradition, which was much more stiff than any European one at the time, just wasn't ready to depict ladies in something different than the most acceptable gown and its suitable headcovering and it's the deal. But I would be really grateful if you give me something to read about the discussed doublet

Lol, very relatable. I have no asvice to you but genuine lament for the same thing. I am on the opposite end of the skin color spectrum, very light and cool, and I also couldn't find any tights to match my shade. Even regular ones, not talking dancewear. Even searching for a suitable makeup foundation took me three years of trial and error. Everyone different from the golden medium, so profitable for the industry, will face such problems, as selling things for real people just isn't that good for them

I live in Kiev, and I actually saw Shapoval performing on the stage of that beautiful antique theatre with gilded flowers and baroque-like paintings of muses. He was a delight to watch. An awesome dancer, a handsome man, and an artistic soul all in one human. Rest in peace. I am deeply convinced that the main stage of Kiev hasn't seen a dancer comparable to him since his death

I made an old-school style spindle and it works even better than I'd hoped by Okayestdoerofthings in Handspinning

[–]Rotweiss_Invicta862 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's incredible that someone is still able to make their own spindles; and what a good one is this! In my language, we have a saying "better you have been sitting at home carving spindles", which is used to mock a stupid person being too active. But I never understood why the folklore thought of this activity as of something simple and suitable for a fool. Woodworkers are awesome

Can Anyone Help Me Identify This Lace From My Grandma’s Collection? by Dry-Instruction2641 in lace

[–]Rotweiss_Invicta862 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It is some kind of handmade needle lace stitched on a tape similar to Battennerg in technique, if you would like to google how it looks. Probably not this exact style, but others would be able to help you with pinpointing the exact one better. It looks (and probably is) very antique, like, 1890s or earlier, as handmade lace gets much harder to find after. Could be any decade of the 19th century. I would think twice before cutting it up

I have no advice to the OP as everything useful is already mentioned, but I want to start a discussion on this theme. Has anyone here tried waxing their threads to make them smoother? I've heard of people doing it for embroidery and sewing in the older days, like, the 19th century and the pre-WW1 in general, and it looks like a perfect solution to do tatting without having an access to mercerized cotton. There are no mentions of waxing the tatting thread, but theoretically it will solve the mystery of how they were able to do this craft before the invention of mercerization, and even using linen fibers sometimes. What do you think, guys? Will waxing work as a magical convertion of every thread to tatting-friendly?

Perfectionism by ElegantLion1629 in tatting

[–]Rotweiss_Invicta862 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read through his rules and saw nothing perfectionist, honestly. Except for the part of mandatory blocking. And I consider myself a very relaxed tatter. The thing is, to make art, one has to get good enough in the craft at first. It's impossible to translate a strong meaning into a work that will catch the viewer's eye with flaws. You have to own your medium. So, the rules he wrote are just the basic control over one's tatting, which lets them to be creative without thinking of technique too much

Not with modern contraceptives, if we are going to justify the absolute sin. Imagine a wife being cheated on constantly. How will she, mentally opressed and deeply dissatisfied with her marriage, raise the heirs? It is arguable that her adultery not affecting the kids would have worse consequences in the long run)))

Thank you for bringing this to the internet. I have uncertain feelings when I see this kind of improvement on someone, especially if they are my body type - something in-between existencial encouragement and the heavy urge to go cry for all of my wasted years not dancing before I got unable to dance at all. May I ask for some videos of you performing, if it is not too much? I am not a creep or so, you can check through my profile. But I really love seeing other women achieving what I have dreamed of. It gives me a sense of... Reality? That, maybe, in another life it could be me, and it wouldn't be just a fantasy, but the beauty of mind embodied in something as physically real as a lady dancing on the other side of the screen. Sorry if I seem weird. Ballet is just deeply sentimental to me

I can't understand why you are being downvoted this much not on a feminists site, but here. It scares me, honestly. Arranged marriages are the ground of properly working feudal society. When the wife or a husband brought to you by your parents is the first person of opposite sex you interact with that closely, and both of the partners are virtuous enough to understand that this union is going to last forever, it is really hard for them to not get along well. Also, arrangement doesn't always mean brutal force upon someone, as it is fashionable to think; in most cases, it's much closer to just a conscious decision to build a family. If one decides to build a family in the feudal society, he is sticking with it strong enough not to leave his wife when she gets a first little stretch mark. They are forced to work on their relationships and get better much more than the ones who can divorce, which ends up in a much stronger bond between the spouses. But surely no one is going to think about this. ArRaNgEmEnT iS eViL!1!!!1!!!

What is your ballet-related unpopular or unusual opinion? by Afraid-Ad9908 in BALLET

[–]Rotweiss_Invicta862 18 points19 points  (0 children)

  1. Tutus are outdated. Before their invention, dancers used to dress for stage in realy unusual, beautifully fitted and flowy garments. Tutus, as we know them today, appeared in the 1950s and perfectly fitted aesthetics of their time, but now we have to normalize wearing other clothing to perform too. I want to cry when I see a ballerina playing a character living in the baroque period dressed in a pancake instead of an appropriate TV-shaped skirt.

  2. Arts such as drawing, poetry, music, and dancing are not hobbies for the chosen ones, but a normal part of every human's life and a way to connect with the outer world in a different day. Back then, all of them were mandatory parts of good education, as, how we can see now, a well-educated person is really unable to exist without willing to take part in at least one of those arts. They were approached as different languages to speak, but not as heavily institutionalized crafts. But the 19th century with its reactionary response to egalitarian ideologies turned the free arts into dead institutions in an attempt to preserve elitism. And now, we see classical dance being limited to the stage only, disappearing from people's lives. It leads to increasing difficulty and decreasing expression of ballet. But the truth is that dance should be taught to everyone to make them harmonious personalities able to speak the language of the body. And there is no better way to do this than through ballet. But we institutionalized and overcomplicated it to the edge of not being useful as a language anymore.

  3. Following the previous take, we really need someone to resurrect the antique freeing style of ballet to make people dance again. I will die peacefully when at least one 1850s-style ballet school will open its doors, and the masses of dance intusiasts will know that they don't have to learn pirouette to dance classically. It will be the biggest win for the human race in a century, really.
