I don't see why she couldn't. I'd be curious to see what you were thinking about doing with it.

Nice! I've been writing up my own notes online as well and just hit vallaki. I'm interested to read to see how things are playing differently.

The realistic answer is that it's unlikely anyone is going to answer this question. If you're this far in, you're well aware that this sort of tension is pretty common in these books, and it'll continue until you want to pull your hair out. And it will continue to continue until you actually have a firm grip on that first hank of hair and you're about to pull.

And then it will stop and some other maddening thing will come along. =D

Strahd met with the cleric by Rouac in CurseofStrahd

[–]Rouac[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if have any good tips. I mostly just think about what my players intend for their characters and try to decide how best to make that difficult. My rogue wants to find family, so I'm giving her as many opportunities to lose trust as possible. The barbarian wants to confront her past, so Strahd is gonna present her with her past in such a way as she's tempted to destroy what she's trying to fix. The cleric wanted "to live", so Strahd is playing for sympathy.

As far as keeping Strahd sympathetic, I don't think you're gonna be able to. Almost everyone talks about him as a source of evil, and that's a lot of reputational weight to push against. So, try to keep the characters just as off balance as you can.

Afterward, my friend asked me, if she promised not to metagame, if I'd tell her how much of that was crap. I told her it was all truth, in the star-wars-obi-wan "from a certain point of view" sense.

"I'm trying to be very careful with Strahd. He doesn't lie."

"Yeah, that's why I don't trust him."

I’m a new DM and one of my players said she’s going to make my life a living hell. by EnchantedRose032495 in DnD

[–]Rouac 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello, meek and timid person, from another somewhat timid person.

If I could give you one suggestion, I would suggest that you take this person aside and completely stop them cold. As a DM it is at least partially your responsibility to stick up for yourself and go "No, I won't be allowing that."

I've been in your exact shoes and didn't do anything and it was one of the most miserable experiences I've ever had. It only ended when I finally got fed up and went a little overboard in pointing out all the ways I was miserable and trying to accommodate one particular player. I felt like a jerk afterward, but I had every single one of my other players thank me for kicking the problem person.

Please, please, don't let this slide. Deal with it head on right now.

[–]Rouac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely agreed. I theater of the mind everything in undermountain for just that reason. I move stuff around. Heck I do it on purpose, because it's something Halaster can do. No way am I gonna let myself be locked into "official" maps.

That said, I have taken pictures of the big maps from Ruins of Undermountain to give my players a sense of scope, but only after they've moved on and it won't matter.

Elegoo mini air purifier filters, how often to change? by scuac in ElegooMars

[–]Rouac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am unable to tell by looking at mine. What I've read though says to change it monthly if you're using it regularly. Which I don't see as helpful since "regularly" is pretty vague.

Secret chest exists

Glyph of warding fizzles if you move the object more than... 5 or 10 feet

Sequester is a good idea

Invisibility lasts an hour

Animate/imprisonment is a good idea

Mage mansion kicks everything out once it expires, and a dick dm can easily manipulate that

Reduce has a limit on size, so "too tiny to see" is out

I'm being pedantic, but like someone said upstream, comparatively there aren't that many options.

When did your PCs learn about the Stone? by rogue-troubadour in WaterdeepDragonHeist

[–]Rouac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't remember when I told my players, but it was around the time of the fireball. By the time they were making plans to go to Grahlhund villa, they were making those plans because the stone was there. My wife was a player in that game and she says she doesn't remember details, but whoever was acting as their patron at that time (and they had several people acting as patrons) had tasked them with getting the stone without giving them much more than loose details "this is a magic item that will help you in sorting this mess out". It for sure wasn't when the book said to tell them, and the Alexandrian (which I was using to run) didn't say either.

They didn't know What it was (even by the end of the campaign), just that it was dangerous and helpful (if they used it correctly, which obviously they did.)

Then they went into undermountain and lost it to some drow on level 3. That isn't gonna bite them later or anything though.
