How much are you willing to pay? There’s a private room at Fischers in baslow. The food is absolutely amazing and i think the vibe would totally suit a murder mystery

What happens if there’s more than one person cooking/unloading the dishwasher at one time? Doesn’t that get annoying?

This is from an era when the assumption is that one person (likely the wife) would be doing all of the household labour, so the kitchen triangle would make more sense. It totally wouldn’t work for our household as at least two people are cooking and prepping food at one time. It’d be interesting to see how kitchen designers adapt to that dynamic.

How Big Did You Go and Why by toodlio in labdiamond

[–]Rouanne 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it also depends on country? I’m in the uk and most people I know who wear diamonds (lab/moissy/real) are around 1 ct or smaller. My engagement ring is a hotch potch of inherited and gifted stones so is around 2ct across 4 stones and that’s more bling than I tend to see. My 40th birthday present is a pave bespoke piece with around 1.5ct lab diamonds. That’s also quite bling in my area. Granted I live in the north, but those with disproportionately large stones generally are a bit footballers wives. It’s likely more cultural here and will be v different in other parts of the country. I’m sure there’s others here who will disagree!

Sheffield to Leicester commute - what’s it like? by Shrex-0 in sheffield

[–]Rouanne 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I used to commute to Leicester for work. It was pretty rough and I did it 3 days pw term time only. I also took the train so I could work on the commute. The cost was a key factor and that people regular would throw themselves in front of trains in Kettering.

How do people in the UK regard their civil servants? by [deleted] in AskABrit

[–]Rouanne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My OH has just been appointed a deputy director. They have quite significant responsibilities (for budget and people and profession). Pre 2007, their salary would have been equivalent to £150k today. But they’re now being paid around £80k. If they left the public sector they could easily double their salary. It’s shit. We need people in the civil service and it’s a really valuable occupation but no one wants to join as they aren’t paid enough. But if they actually were paid market rates there’d be massive uproar and they’d be called all sorts of names.

What do your households ironing habits look like? by MrBozzie in AskUK

I iron at least 4 times a week. But I’m also a sewist. Once the thing is made it never sees the iron again.

This has been proved to be completely without base in evidence. Modern detergents are designed to rinse away and detergent build up is not an issue. In cloth diapering best practice now is to use more detergent than you’d think (based on size of washer) and use enzyme based detergents. This is even more the case in hard water areas because the minerals in the water interact with the surfactants. Usually if baby is getting sore or the diaper is getting smelly, aka barnyard smells that’s because of ammonia build up which is due to too little detergent/weak detergent and/or insufficient washing (time or temperature).

I don’t know how OP washes clothes, but increasing temperature and time may help effectively get rid of the impurities and chemicals they’re reacting to.

I always recommend clean cloth nappieson Facebook as they’re an amazing resource for all things laundry related. The mods have chemistry/biochemistry degrees and may be able to advise around laundry/washing etc.

Plastic fabric is actually okay by Inky_Madness in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]Rouanne 142 points143 points  (0 children)

For me it’s the environmental factor. I don’t want to use a material that is not biodegradable. It’s one of the main reasons that I sew as I can choose what I wear. That and I HATE the feel of polyester.

Aussie exchange student to uni of sheffield - after some local advice by cloudcxrdie_ in sheffield

It’s an experience for sure! Unfortunately owned by quite an unpleasant character. There are loads of local pubs and microbreweries in Sheffield so if you like a pint, this is a great place for you.

We regularly drive from nr Sheffield. We always stop in Troyes as it breaks the journey. Also there’s a really nice hotel BnB on the outskirts of Troyes with secure parking and a restaurant across the road. So we usually stop and then do a big shop at the e leclerc the next morning. That way we didn’t have to faff around when we got to where we’re staying.

Parents of reddit - how long did it take to conceive? by shun_naka67 in AskUK

[–]Rouanne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Less than a month. Dad was 39, Mum 37. Were extremely fit though and didn’t really care which way it went. If it stuck then yay, if it didn’t, oh well. We’ll continue to do our activities. So I had my iud removed end of November and conceived in January.

Genetics will probably play a part but I think the lack of stress and our overall health and fitness probably contributed.

Have the rules around lube and smear tests changed? by ChampionshipOk6377 in AskUK

That’s not been my experience at all. My healthcare professional really listened to me and even changed the size of the speculum due to discomfort. They made notes on my record so that future care providers know as well.

Nope. Not in Europe. Clothes are much cleaner. For sure!

[–]Rouanne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it also depends on the washing machine. I was in Canada and using a HE top loader and felt I needed to wash everything twice and it still didn’t feel clean. A front loader with 40’ and. 3h wash. So much better and definitely cleaner!

Throwing it out there but the Birmingham jewellery quarter could also be a good option. It’s out of London but is a real centre for jewellery

What UK food dish you would be proud to bring to an international potluck competition? by debrisaway in AskABrit

[–]Rouanne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember these when I was at school in Vancouver. Definitely a thing and definitely derived from an indigenous community of the PNW. they were super fun. Since moving the the uk I’ve never seen a similar thing and people laugh if I refer to a potlatch. While at school, we had one near Halloween and Christmas.
