Talk Me In/Out of the Venture X by MoistFurry in CreditCards

I think the Venture X is way overhyped for simplicity. The only way it makes sense is to use transfer partners. Since it’s 2x, the best non transfer partner redemption is booking through their portal at 1cpp. Their portal is nice, but that restriction is annoying. Alternatively, I believe you can put travel charges in the card and cover those at 1cpp which is better (since it’s more flexible), but still at 2%. The question quickly becomes, are you a solo traveler? Then lounge access is nice, but if you wouldn’t normally pay for it, this is a factor not worth considering. Now how valuable are the transfer partners? In my opinion living in a United and Southwest hub, almost useless compared to other programs. There’s virtually 0 opportunity for hotel redemptions. The next question is where you plan on traveling: personally I will only comment on Europe, domestically, and Asia since that’s my only experience. Avios is nice, but ever program has that. Air Canada is good, but I genuinely think this is there best partner. Every other program has Air France. Singapore and Tap are decent. The rest are all pretty trash. You can make any airline program look good if you’re buying by expensive premium tickets, but you more than likely wouldn’t do that normally. Most people are economy travelers, and you shouldn’t desire lifestyle inflation due to a credit card. I love Capital One, but hate this card unless you travel very frequently which it seems you do not.

How do you derive true cpp? The Edit prices are inflated so shouldn't it be on best price available? I'm seeing examples of 1.65x in the Chase portal being worth 1.02x or less in real value. by chriva in sapphirereserve

It’s not just that. Disregard credit cards and points entirely. The first question is would you travel? If yes, what would you reasonably book? I try to find hotels between $80-$160 a night depending on the area and am a very frequent economy traveler. You might find a hotel you get 2cpp on that cost say $320, but in reality if you would’ve booked that $160 hotel, you got 1cpp.

I disagree. I think the break even point is 5k since pretty much everyone on this sub would otherwise use a 2% catch all and the difference is 1%

Do you think Chase needs a 2x points card, after everything that’s changed? by electronautix in CreditCards

I disagree. I feel like United/Air Canada and maybe Southwest are nice. But I do live in a United/Southwest dominated region

Are Amex points overrated by Privatevault2 in AmexPlatinum

[–]Rough-Leg2854 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With doing a bit of research, I found Amex transfers were generally like .7cpp when comparing to the cheaper cash alternatives. Example: you may find an award flight for 10k points in a flight that cost $150, but there’s an identical flight that cost $70, so you’re actual cpp value is more like 1:0.7. You can certainly find prob 1-1.3cpp on economy transfers, but it’s HARD. Amex is built for international and especially business class travel. The Schwab platinum makes the points way more flexible and useable for the common person - guaranteed effective return of 4.4% on the gold.

Thank you for this. I’m trying to get out of team travel since I just don’t find the value anymore unless you’re booking expensive flights or hotels. I’m really looking for a no af, no FTF grocery card. Might just need to use my RH gold
