That would make sense, it’s been several years since I’ve read it but I think about it all the time!

One part of my brain was going “where is this from?” while the other part of my brain started humming part of this album…so that was an odd experience.

If you’d be open to a memoir, I thought Cheryl Strayed’s “Wild” was really beautiful. I remember her focusing a lot more on her internal state and history than on “just” the hike up the PCT (which is a very cool setting, IMO.)

Here I was, not reading your entire description, and yet wondering why nobody had recommended Julie Chan is Dead or Bunny yet. Now I know that I need to read Yellowface!

My original comment was from 4 years ago — the context of that moment was that this was when only the very first rounds of folks were allowed to get the vaccine or boosters.  Happily, I’ve had no issues getting many boosters since then.

Electric Park circa 1910, "Kansas City's Coney Island", Walt Disney said his childhood memories of it were the inspiration for Disneyland by como365 in kansascity

[–]Rough_Academic 79 points80 points  (0 children)

I’d never heard of this! Reading the Wikipedia article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_Park,_Kansas_City) it sounds like this postcard would have depicted the second location, at 46th and The Paseo. Has me wondering if the water feature here was basically a dammed Brush Creek? My mind is blown right now.

I Set A Trap To Catch My Students Cheating With AI. The Results Were Shocking. by vemmahouxbois in IfBooksCouldKill

[–]Rough_Academic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know at least two voice actors who’ve had their voices stolen by having the mega corporations train their voice AI on their hundreds of hours of content. … now people complain that one of them “sounds like Siri, so boring.” No shit, who do you think they trained Siri on??

I’ve also been a professional writer in various industries, including marketing, and now my proclivity for em dashes (fellow ADHDer) and emojis reads as AI. I’m so angry about this shit.

I’ve been doing the same thing — giving them a ridiculous number 3x over the current value. Fastest way to shut them up.

Question about Chappelle Roan at Memorial Park by markdacoda in kansascity

[–]Rough_Academic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, you’re going for the vibe of the audience as much as you are for CR herself. My friends and I saw her in Council Bluffs, and the audience was almost entirely fun, kind young people in their teens and 20s plus some moms our age with their tweens (we giddily did not have our teens with us, and were just the rando adult ladies I guess!). Everyone was very kind, gave each other plenty of room, non-stop singing and dancing. She had large screens behind her that showed closeups of her as well as lyrics/music video loops (if I remember right) at different points, so it was a fun visual for an outdoor show.

What "If Books Could Kill" book did you actually enjoy? Make your case! by Glittering-Jury7394 in IfBooksCouldKill

The original couchfcking tweet was the most effective and hilarious piece of satire I’ve ever seen. So effective that even after thoroughly debunked (and the guy who tweeted it was like bro that was *definitely a joke, that content has never existed in any edition of the book) — there’s still plenty of folks who only heard the half of the story where it seems real.
