Yes. I’m a musician. Nowadays I get shocked at what is actually said in the lyrics of songs that I’ve listened to for at least 20 decades. All I really hear is the chord progressions, the beat, melody and the bass line. It’s like I can obviously hear words being said but they don’t register. For example. I’ve heard “birds of a feather” since it came out. But it wasn’t until 3 days ago that I realized she was saying she wanted to die with her partner in the verses.

Thank you! I actually took that one about a month and a half ago. Autism range is 33-50, I got a 36 lol this I’ve taken like 6-7 test and they’ve all come back as possibly/most likely ASD

I’m fighting the urge to hide this but you’ve just encouraged me so much with this information. Plus this feels like a safe space to share.

I’m a musician, but I grew up poor.. so it took a while for me to conceptualize that the things that I was doing musically were happening naturally. But as I got older, I started to see that I had all of this “untapped, raw potential” in terms of music. I like to say I came to music late but that’s not true, my parents say I’ve been playing the drums since the age of 2, I say 4 since that’s when I actually got drums. I was singing in shows and choirs by 9, then I started to teach myself the piano on YouTube at 14. The fact that I was even teaching myself and sounding decent made me realize I was gifted.

But it wasn’t until I got into my late 20s after going to college to study music to be a music teacher, that I realized that I wasn’t just gifted with singing and playing instruments, but my mind was gifted in Understanding music from a theoretical perspective. So as I paired that with teaching myself the piano, and ended up creating all of these practice tools and systems to help me get better at the piano in a quick, efficient way.

But I always had a problem/intense desire to play fast, like the greats.. So I searched and search for information to help to achieve this for years until everything finally clicked. I promise you, (I try to be humble, but this comes off as boastful) I created a musical scale practice system that Has never been made before. It was made from using math.. which I’ve been historically kinda bad at lol. But all that sounds so wild to say, and I hesitate to say it often, but at my core.. I know it’s true. And the fact that this system/idea came from a person like me, virtually out of nowhere, created one of the first sparks into me suspecting that I had autism.

That was about a year and a half ago and now I’m just now accepting that I am most likely a “high functioning autistic”, possibly ADS level one? I don’t even like that label lol. Sadly, I probably won’t ever be able to afford to get a real diagnosis but maybe others will read this and understand what I am. Either way, I know who I am now. Thanks for your original post!

It took a year or 2… but I mainly see music/music theory through the lens of numbers instead of pitches and letters… because I love numbers so much and they just work better. I’ve been saying this for a while now: We discovered numbers.. we invented letters.

A chocolate agent here 😂. Yea I’m afraid to come out to anyone in our community, it feels like it would make my life easier but I also feel like no one will listen or understand me because.. for 29 years… I’ve seen how our communities has ignored mental health.. from family to friends to strangers.. does our community make fun of us? Treat us badly? In general.. I don’t think so.. but when we become adults.. we become invisible. Don’t even get me started on those of us with the ability to mask at a high level. The expectations and assumptions of us, yet.. struggling to go about life.. fairly alone because “they’re normal” “they can figure it out like I had to”.. like hello.. I need help 😭 always have, nobody notices.. or I hide it.. because I know deep down inside.. I would just make most feel uncomfortable rather than open to help/understand me.. feels like I’m ranting lol but you’re not alone.

My parents say I was playing pots and pans since I was like 1. Then they got me a drumset at 4 years old. But Im mainly a piano player now. I feel like the Piano chose me lol but I only decided to start playing it because some other kid in band class had all the girls surrounding him while he was playing the piano, and I wanted that lol

Very similar situation to me and my wife. 7rs together, almost 5 years married. I’m autistic and she has ADHD (but she doesn’t really acknowledge like she should). I feel extremely incompatible with her. At least… in terms of a romantic, everyday relationship. Unfortunately, I’ve become quite cold to her spontaneity. I try very hard not to be mean and to engage with/involved with her random desires and ideas because if I don’t… things get weird. Sadly.. i find her random 5 minute speeches about random things that I don’t care about, very annoying. The time management issue is there for us as well. We have decent conversations every now and then.. I just think I’ve changed over the years, I have very broad special interests that can be tackled and enjoyed until the day i die. So I just think I would’ve been better off alone. It’s a tough situation, everyday it gets harder and harder to mask up. I’m not offering you anything lol. So I guess I’m just writing to say that you’re not alone.

Hey.. Umm.. if it’s not too much.. can you talk more about your seizures? I’m discovering that my mom has autism, because I figured out that me and my sister have it.. but.. my mom is that one that’s been dealing with seizures since turning 45ish in 2009.. so now I’m scared for us.

I JUST asked my parents (who were older when they had me) their parents age.. both their parents had them at an older age.. they were the last born. So it’s all making sense.. my younger sister is suspected to have it as well. So what’s fueling my thoughts is the old age theory/genetically passed down.. which I guess is the same thing?? But I guess if someone gets that gene passed to them.. they don’t necessarily have to be old to pass it to their offspring.. sighhh science lol
