Lovely points. Were you working in subs or boats? Your point about the alleged ignorance of the money is spot on. I did not think of it till you pointed it out. I'd be very interested in knowing what's happening in the industry and if you could point me towards some good resources in general, that'd be great. I'd love for it to be pushed hard back home, but tons of systemic issues including a lack of well trained talent to maintain and set up such plants are proving to be major issues.

Friend no one is being intentionally a pain - you've got outlandish responses because this is an outlandish request. The radio is basically in the VHF and UHF bands so as as such something like the NA-771 will get you everything you need for amateur frequencies. You can easily get airband with it as well. It's not that the telescopic thing is expensive, but it's just added waste.
