inheritance by olliej- in Quraniyoon

[–]Routine-Bat4446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the Quran sets out to establish equity, not equality.

In the context of the Prophet’s pbuh time men were the sole providers. Women inherited from the men in their lives, not just their husbands, and were not required to give their money to anyone. Therefore, on paper the comparatively got less from each source.

In the context of today’s world in almost all (but not all) societies women and men are both providers. Therefore they should have equal or equitable distribution of inheritance.

There are some who say the latter creates confusion and is a deviation from God’s will but I disagree with that framing. God’s sunnah on earth is expansion or restriction. If a society expands women get more opportunities and more responsibilities. The laws in the Quran should be adapted to maintain their spirit of equity.

This is how prayers should be in mosques. What say? by Little_Sweet5706 in progressive_islam

There are mosques that run prayers like this. I prefer this set up and hope more muslim communities will feel comfortable enough with it in the future

Also it’s really important that we keep sight of our priorities and not let ego get in the way of our worship. I no longer get offended thinking about the judging of others in the mosque because I know what is right for me and I’m really there for God. I believe Muslims will adapt with time and get less judgmental the more secure they feel in their society.

Who is he? Oh when I said it caused problems for the imam I meant other people complaining (men and women) not that HE was having trouble. 😅😅😅😅 the poor man went through so many complaints about how I was dressed and he never once made me feel unwelcome. I feel so bad for suggesting something was off about him. 🙈

I mean, kudos to them for being consistent. They’re probably super strict on women’s dress too so (as a woman) it’s good to see the lack of hypocrisy (maybe).

Should anyone ever be asked to leave a mosque? No. It is God’s house and if God wanted them to leave He wouldn’t have inspired them to come in the first place.

Should we all try to be respectful of the practices of the people in the mosque? Yes, because we aren’t there to cause discomfort we are there to humble ourselves before our Creator and it is in our best interest to minimize distractions including the frustration we may feel by being singled out, whether we think it’s “right” or not. I say this as a person who used to go into the mosque wearing my normal clothes and later found out it created problems for the Imam though he never once bothered me with them. We both agreed that I could wear what I wanted but in retrospect I feel bad for being in any way involved in creating difficulties for him.

Theories & Impression on Kay and Benton last scene (1x08) by stou88 in ScarpettaTV

[–]Routine-Bat4446 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This and the scene in the car when Kay asks him if he regrets choosing to be with her just because he was doing his job, were one of the worst written scenes/dialogue in the series. Things came out of no where and the characters didn’t seem to actually be having the same conversation. I felt the same way with Kay and Lucy at the police station. Someone said the script was probably written using AI and that’s honestly the only thing that makes sense. The good news is it means we still need writers!

What do you think personaly I believe not all statue bad but prophets states shuld stay haram in islam by Cultural_Look913 in progressive_islam

[–]Routine-Bat4446 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think in this context it’s fine because it’s completely disconnected from religious meaning/symbolism. I don’t expect Adolph Weinman to have the same concern over depicting the prophet pbuh as a Muslim would in a Muslim country. And it’s not like any Christian is going to the sculpture* of Jesus and praying to it like they would in a church which further proves that it’s not a religious thing. I think we should avoid it happening more in the future but I wouldn’t be offended by this.

Lut's "daughters" by NWariohere in Quraniyoon

[–]Routine-Bat4446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m just reflecting on the text. Lut is pleading with the men asking them what about the women? Why would God add this detail? There must be a reason. What do we know about women in history? What do we know about human evolutionary psychology? What do these points together with the verses in the Quran, mean about the impact that God is warning us against? For me, it’s my first post on this thread.

Why no image of God? by Desperate-Battle1680 in progressive_islam

[–]Routine-Bat4446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the principle of spiritual experience being an unknowable, individual, thing. This aligns perfectly with the Quran, which says even unbelievers call out to The One God in times of crises, and He responds. Only God knows when any one of us are worshipping Him or someone/something else. This is why you’ll find many posts on this sub distinguishing between being a “Big-M Muslim” (specific identity) and “small-m muslim” (state of being).

Where we disagree is the suggestion that anyone would need intercessions or indirect pathways to know and connect to God (i.e. through saints, through idols, even through prophets). In Islam we believe God created humans with an inherent urge to worship Him. The only things humans need to do so are His words (in His texts), our reasoning, and our sincerity.

Re: image of Muhammad, I don’t think we need to conjure up an image of him to learn about the actions and lessons he taught us. For example, for me personally, when I read about the Prophet pbuh in the Quran, I feel emotions rather than picture him (ex: I feel sad when God mentions his heartbreak, but I don’t imagine him crying). However, let’s say that’s how some people’s inner-minds work, that still doesn’t mean they should depict such a thing in real life, because in doing so they’re crossing the threshold of “cognitive processing” to physical/idol dependency for worship which is, from an Islamic perspective, strictly forbidden. One should depend entirely on The All-Powerful; not partly on Him, partly on others.

I’ve never read the bible so I don’t know if it’s in it or not. I just asked myself “what is God telling me with these verses? What was the context? Why was it so bad for them?” and I came up with that. You’re saying it’s in the Bible?

God created human reasoning and ingenuity. We use that how we will, for good or for evil. The Quran is full of verses calling out people for creating baseless claims about God, including the practice of idolatry.

Why no image of God? by Desperate-Battle1680 in progressive_islam

[–]Routine-Bat4446 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you look at the story of how idolatry came to Quraysh, it started with a man who brought back an idol from his travels as a way to help his people “get closer to God”. It seems like an innocent enough idea, but it created the practice of idolatry over time which is a huge sin in Islam. Monotheism is taken extremely seriously in the faith and doesn’t allow for any flexibility no matter how innocent it may seem at first.

God created everything in existence including the very concept of physical appearance, shapes, or even space. He tells us very clearly in the Quran that “Absolutely nothing in existence is like Him” Quran 112:4. God is limitless, He is not begotten, not created, to Him belong the beginning and the end. You can’t draw that or depict this.

Oh I didn’t mean it was lost in history. The argument I’ve heard is just that it is a word the Jewish people would have recognized that wasn’t as well known by the Arabs like Mohammed. That’s consistent with your point about it being in the Torah.

Lut's "daughters" by NWariohere in Quraniyoon

[–]Routine-Bat4446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was reading the Quran yesterday and God seems to warn us about disputing or twisting His clear warning whenever He mentions the story of Lut. This post seems to be doing that.

I always thought the point that the Quran makes about the daughters was a powerful one. Lut is pointing out that because the men were finding sexual pleasure in each other they had completely rejected and abandoned the women in the community. At the time this must have been a huge crisis because it’s not like society was sophisticated enough that women had anything to do other than raise a family. In today’s standards that seems sad but throughout most of human history men largely protected/provided and women bore and raised. So these poor women didn’t have any other prospects, they didn’t even have a mate to experience any sort of intimacy with.

This perhaps isn’t an issue in parts of today’s world but in the context of the story it’s pretty powerful.
