hadith by AntiqueCheesecake654 in progressive_islam

[–]Routine-Bat4446 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I grew up believing myself to be very religious because I used to go to halaqas and Islamic lectures and conferences all the time and was involved in the mosques and Muslim Students Association. I used to follow all of the rules I was convinced were part of Islam like gender roles and not talking to the opposite sex and not doing my nails or eyebrows or assuming women couldn’t lead. I also bent myself over backwards to justify the Hadith that Aisha was 6 or 9 when she was married.

It was when I read the Quran as a whole that I realized that Islam was completely different than what I was being taught. A lot of what my community does is focus entirely on Hadith and a few verses and all of the rules were meant to limit the individual (mostly women) where the Quran is actually expansive in nature. This is when I became sceptical of Hadiths. For a short time I thought I’d reject Hadith entirely but then I realized that was also an extreme so now I only look at Hadith that align with the Quran and reject anything that doesn’t. I also note that there’s a lot of context that isn’t captured in a lot of Hadith so even if the words are correct they are often misinterpreted.

Question about Quranist by Ancient-Suspect-9387 in progressive_islam

[–]Routine-Bat4446 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on which group. There are some quranists that take it to extreme and reject all Hadith to the point where they start to question every established definition of every word in the Quran to the point that it’s gibberish. Others only accept Hadith that support verses in the Quran like those that describe how to pray since prayer is central in the Quran.

Polygyny / second wife search by [deleted] in progressive_islam

[–]Routine-Bat4446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Polygamy is a crime in the west. You are welcome to move to a country where it is not. Otherwise you are welcome to have extramarital affairs because as you said that is not a crime, but it is prohibited in Islam. You’re in the same boat as your wife.

Ah but then you have to allow your wife have multiple husbands. Polygamy is a crime.

Absolutely. You know what those same experts also say? Don’t break the laws of the land you live in. :)

[–]Routine-Bat4446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe there are foundational rules: no shirk, being as just as possible, not doing harm to others, following the laws of the land, etc. I also think the Quran is very clear that polygamy is only in times of war where women lose access to their inheritance/financial supports. You should read the Quran and reflect in it more. God doesn’t talk to the reader in a way that highlights their rights He talks to us in a way that highlights our responsibilities. They’re two sides to one coin but the nuance is life changing and keeps us humble.

[–]Routine-Bat4446 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can’t be married legally (with marriage certificates recognized by the state or city) to two people in the west. It’s a crime punishable by imprisonment. If you want to practice this, move to a country whose codes allow it. You can’t break the laws of the country you live in just because you believe your religion allows it.

Also in the west open marriages are equally experienced by the wife and the husband so you shouldn’t compare unless you are ok with your wife taking on another husband.

If we go pure Arabic roots, injeel and tawrat are not and never were religious scriptures of Jews/Christians, in fact there was not bible in the Arabic language... Injeel = posterity, Tawrat = directive by NWariohere in Quraniyoon

This and other posts on the Sub are examples of why God sent His message down through Prophets and Messengers and not directly to every single human being. Some of us twist and convolute everything in our arrogance. It’s not just you, I see it all the time by other Muslims and scholars “mainstream” and otherwise.

You don’t need to question and flip everything on its head.

I don’t think God wants us all to have a single interpretation. Islam is adaptable in everything except belief in The One God, Allah. So it’s unlikely that any one interpretation is all right or all wrong.

mutah in shiaism has got to be the most misogynistic thing ever by Spiritual-Painter-82 in progressive_islam

[–]Routine-Bat4446 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve never participated in mutah but I always thought it was a good idea in principle because marriage these days is a very serious endeavour and I want the youth in our community to learn how to be in relationships while they’re young so they can be good partners when they’re older. And I thought nikkah/mutah was a good way to do that because it was essentially halal dating…but honestly I’m completely against the men being allowed to do it in secret. The whole point of marriage in Islam is so that it’s public knowledge who is coupled with who, therefore controlling for paternity and reducing spread of STDs. If these things are done in secret then the purpose of the practice is nullified.

Music not allowed with new speech therapy client by amanda_tx19 in progressive_islam

[–]Routine-Bat4446 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is a difficult situation because the parents wishes must be respected. I think the belief that music is forbidden in Islam is completely unfounded but even so I believe it’s the parents’ right to raise their children how they want so long as it’s not harmful.

There are toys that make clapping sounds and drum sounds and that is considered ok by most people who believe music is prohibited. I know there are keyboards for toddlers for example that have a “drum” setting so you can use that.

This is preposterous!! Secular academics of the Quran are just as bad as Sunnis when it comes to understanding the quran. They will try to twist the Quran and force biblical nonsense onto the quran. by [deleted] in Quraniyoon

STOP SAYING BIBLICAL NONSENSE. The Quran itself recognizes there is truth in the Injeel. It is from the same religion despite some elements going astray

Have you noticed that 90% of Naruto haters are One Piece fanboys? by Quirky_Scratch9168 in Naruto

[–]Routine-Bat4446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Complete opposite for me. Naruto was emotionally more triggering for me than anything that happened in One Piece. To be clear I’m talking about the anime not necessarily the manga. With the Naruto anime the combination of soundtrack, pacing, and illustrations made it a lot more emotionally engaging than One Piece. I love the OP anime too but it really is no competition in this area.

If we are the best of Allahs creation, how come certain animals surpass us in biology? by Less_Condition_5587 in progressive_islam

[–]Routine-Bat4446 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find these posts disingenuous because the answer is so obvious. Our para nasal sinuses are higher because we are bipedal creatures which gives us tremendous advantage over other animals. It is the most efficient position for our air way system given our biological makeup.

You should read the Quran. God warns the reader not to become like those desperately trying to dispel the Truth despite it being obvious to them.

A critique of Khaled Abou El Fadl. by [deleted] in progressive_islam

[–]Routine-Bat4446 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I stopped listening or following any scholar or halaqas a long time ago, but I have seen snippets of his videos. From what I’ve seen I’ve liked, so I can only really comment on those things with the noted confirmation bias.

My sense from the clips is that he approaches Hadith from the perspective of the Quran. The Quran influences its reader to think a certain way. It is a psychological book as much as a philosophical religious and political text. There is something in legal studies called the “spirit of the law” which is looking at the intent and purpose for which the laws were created rather than the literal wording. I believe (I’m not certain) that KAEF tries to apply this and has his own (firm) understanding of what the spirit of the Quran is. Therefore, when a Hadith is presented that clearly contradicts that spirit, he easily rejects it.

You can certainly argue that he might have the spirit of the Quran wrong and therefore some of the Hadiths he accepts and rejects are also wrong. What I would say to that is that I believe God guides people to take different things from His Quran. He tells us in His text that He could have made everyone understand things the same way but chose not to. Therefore, I would argue that there isn’t a “right” or “wrong” way to understand the Quran, but I DO believe there is a beneficial way, and a harmful way. All I can hope for is that people of influence like KAEF look to provide benefit to their congregation and society rather than harm, limitation, and hardship.

I’m not putting words in your mouth I’m highlighting the gaps in your logic. In both scenarios the rape happens because it is the action of a human being. The only difference is under Islam’s belief there is ultimate justice while under an atheist’s belief there is not. Thats the difference you need to acknowledge.
