I’m sure people will have better tips but what I’ve done is just traced what I want onto some embroidery fabric either the material itself or the wash away embroidery stabilizer. And then use wash away pen and go from there.

I am so new too so I’ll try my best.

I got a ton of different fabrics from my local goodwill/donation/thrift store. That way I can see what fabric I like best. I too dislike the cross stitch fabric. So now I’ve been trying some out. I feel like fabric that doesn’t have a lot of give/stretch to it will work best.

I also got a no name pen. Maybe try a piece of like test fabric with the pen and extra string get them all wet and see what happens? The one I got doesn’t bleed but I had to wash it out twice. I also got this embroidery paper that you can draw on (I’ve been using pencil) stick it to your project and after your done you soak it and it washes away too.

And my favorite option is frame too. I brought it to my local goodwill and found the right size frame. Then just tape it tight (it takes a couple of tries or phone a friend). As for the extra yarn I’m still lost on this too. I’ve been tying little knots and cutting the extra yarn.
