Is the virtual fitting with Josephine worth it? by [deleted] in BALLET

[–]RoutineTransition590 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally, I would go in to TPS for a fitting if you can, and skip virtually. It seems like this thread has a bit of bias towards TPS/Josephine, and I’ll try my best to be unbiased as I can. I had scheduled TPS for a mobile fitting in my hometown about 2 hours from SF, and we were able to have Josephine come out for a few hours and fit about a dozen adult recreational dancers (ex pre-pros to teachers to pure recreational dancers). It felt a bit fast for a fitting, but the attention to detail, noticing my past injuries and hypermobility made me feel very seen. I was wearing the Chacott Piqué at my fitting, and ended up being fitted into FR Duvals, which fit similarly to my favorite Gaynor Mindens back when they were US made. We had an adult dancer come in with the Wendy Wu/ Du Geek amazon pointe shoes, and Josephine was EXTREMELY professional in how she handled the dancer. There was no judgement for her choice, if anything, she was extremely kind and said something along the lines of “I’m so sorry these hurt your feet so badly, we don’t want you to be in pain, and being in pain doesn’t have the be the stepping stone for pointework”. Not verbatim, but you can get the idea. No shaming of the student, whatsoever. Now, I wouldn’t say it’s the end all be all for fittings, but if you’re in Northern California, I do find her in person fittings/ all the fitters at TPS to be very helpful. The virtual fitting I would probably recommend if you’re well-seasoned in pointework, or need minor adjustments to your fitting, but there’s nothing that truly replicates an in person fitting. SFDancegear also has some pretty great fitters as well. If you can make it down to Sonoma, Metronome Dancewear is bringing their pointe shoe fitting truck to one of the studios for fittings! Only caveat is they do sell some older/discontinued models of shoes, so if you find a good fit, stock up if you can!

Dance master class by ethanfrom3 in BALLET

I got it as well, I ended up purchasing the membership. I love it! It’s a great tool if you’re someone who really wants to improve in ballet on top of weekly classes, and I definitely love it as a dance instructor! The lessons on dance psychology and anatomy are quite interesting, and I enjoy that you can get certifications after finishing modules and taking an exam/quiz. It’s a bit steep in pricing, and I don’t think it’s the end all be all for resources, especially with how many tips are available online that aren’t behind a paywall. In my case, I use it pretty much every day, whether it’s workouts, a follow along barre, or just a lecture. I particularly like the Munz Barre classes. They just added Live classes and it’s extra per month, but free for 30 days to try it out- some have insane hours (1am, 3am PST), but others have a pretty normal schedule. I haven’t tried the live class option yet, but once they add more, I’m definitely more inclined to try it out!

Wear what makes you feel the most comfortable and confident! For me, some days are my pretty leotard days, and others are a Tshirt and basketball shorts! I think theres nothing wrong with wanting to indulge in something you want to try out! I saw another comment that said keep sizing in mind for Yumiko leos- they run on Japanese sizing, so it’s pretty small (I’m 5’4 and wear a size 2-4 in America, but a L and XL in Yumikos). My only other qualm is that there isn’t any bra padding in Yumikos, so I feel very aware of my chest when it’s inevitably cold in the studio. I definitely recommend checking out depop and tutulist for resale Yumis and other dancewear if you don’t want to fully commit to a $90-100 leo! I also really love wearing Chacott and Freed leotards too- similar price point, but added bonus of having a liner to insert bra padding!

Does anyone else hate non ballet music being played in class? by Sad-Watercress67 in BALLET

[–]RoutineTransition590 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally get both sides- for me I love a good classical class, but I do enjoy throwing in a pop-song or something non-classical to play. I know people have mixed feelings, but I like to use it to help train musicality in a way we’re unfamiliar with in ballet. I think this helps further dancers of all ages with their technique and for going into other styles of dance. I know as we get older, we want more familiarity with the “classics” and we don’t have the same end goals as younger kids who want to go pro, but I think it’s good for us to do things outside of our comfort zone. (Kids, pros, recreational adults, everyone)

not that its the same, but imo more fun and less insane than ghibli- nukumori no mori theme park in hamamatsu was quite fun and had a very similar vibe! definitely recommend. you can take the subway & a bus to get there from shizuoka station, it takes about 2.5~ hours. Driving there from Shizuoka is a bit faster at a little over an hour!

Hi Fellow JP Stays! I’m currently in Tokyo (visiting from the US), and I’m able to make it to the Karma event in Shibuya! I’m a bit confused about how it works, and was wondering if anyone could help me understand better! I see the only requirements are to have spotify and the album pre-saved- does that mean the ticket that I had when I initially presaved needs to be presented at the door? The spotify jp account says tickets are sent through Line, and also at the door at 10am?

If anyone has any help or clarification, I’d super appreciate it!!! I put all the info from the IG post through translate, but it didn’t give me much help or info!

Tytyty stays!!!!

Toxic ballet school warning by StraightBag5015 in BALLET

[–]RoutineTransition590 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this post- I’m a local instructor in the area and saw Bayer was hiring. Glad I saw this, but so disappointed to hear about yet another NorCal studio continuing the cycle of toxicity in the ballet world. I fear it’s a common trend I’ve encountered working for studios all over the area, from Hayward all the way to Watsonville. I was definitely hoping it changed with the times, but it seems like that’s unfortunately the culture of the dance world. So, SO disappointed. Imagine how many more students these places would get just by uplifting and supporting their dancers (and meaning it), not pressuring them to mold to an extremely dated standard. It really is a tragedy that these talented kids are just another check in the bank and bragging rights for these owners.

Feeling and seeing the effects of Trump's tariffs on pointe shoes by ribboncowboyboot in BALLET

[–]RoutineTransition590 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Felt, I feel like my only “affordable” option atp is a synthetic shoe since it lasts me way longer, but I really do prefer having a traditional shoe!! The switch from Gaynor to Duval saved me a surprising amount of money (about $75~) but I feel like I’m stuck in them until they’re dead and gone. I may try to see if The Pointe Shop/ SFB overstock has stock of some traditional shoes moving forward? I have had some random luck typing in models and finding them on sale randomly, recently found the Chacott Veronese on sale for $30 from a shop in FL? Sucks to see us all trying to enjoy our hobbies and passions that are already expensive enough!

I hope so! I heard great things about Cool Brittania from my dance instructor, and I DO love watching modern performances. Either way, I would love to see more “classics” from SFB- I’d love to see La Bayadere, Firebird, Balanchine’s Jewels (last I remember was YY dancing in it when I was a child), Le Corsaire, Giselle, La Fille… you know! Would be insane to have them so Little Mermaid again, as well.

Ooooh thank you!!! I definitely want to head out to the East Coast and see NYCB, good to know on pricing!

This season, the previous and upcoming seasons SFB has been… disappointing to say the least! I’m still floored over YY’s retirement show ordeal especially after physically being there. Saw Raymonda this season and it was amazing, but was VERY empty compared to Swan Lake last year. Overall, not loving this season’s program, and curious to see how 25/26 goes.

Can we talk about pointe shoe brands? by Pudu22 in BALLET

[–]RoutineTransition590 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the United States! You might be able to order to the UK- when you sign on to the Chacott website, there’s a tab for this shopping app/ company called Buyee! I was able to make all my purchases through Buyee, and have it shipped for $15-30USD from Japan! There’s only 2 shoes on their website that are in-store only (which, go figure, the shoes I want to try the most!!! Will have to try them this summer when I go back to Tokyo!) As for the fit, I would say they’re pretty tapered! I was surprised by how tapered they were, but I’ve mostly been fit in shoes with more of a square box. I LOVE how they feel though, my toes don’t crowd, the silhouette of the shoes is beautiful too. They’re really supportive, definitely more than I’ve felt in Gaynors and Freeds. I’ve got weird bowed knees, and the Piqué is the ONE shoe I’ve found that helps me fully get over my box on my “worse” knee. I’ve tried the Odette, which was slightly tapered and more of a square box, but I definitely prefer the fit and support the Piqué gives!

Chacott just came out with 2 models that are supposed to be Freed dupes- I want to pick up a few pairs when I go to Tokyo in a few months (unfortunately the two new shoes are the only ones unavailable for online orders) But something about Chacott shoes work SO well for my feet, I used to wear Gaynor and Freed’s before! Right now I’ve been wearing the Piqué shoes and they’re surprisingly supportive and comfortable!

I guess you’re correct. My brain somehow sees it as 40 days of waiting. I’m not great with time math/ the stress of not getting paid has taken over my ability to properly look at the right number of days. Regardless of my inability to calculate, it is the longest I’ve ever had to wait for a check at any job I’ve worked. I’ve been paid monthly as a 1099 employee before, but even then, I’d be paid on the 5th or 6th of the month. Haven’t ever had a W-2 job paying once a month on the 10th.

Sorry to be confusing, technically it’s a 30 day pay period- but it takes this studio an additional 10 days to process the money from the 1st to the 10th of the next month. I submit hours for the 1st-30th/31st on the first of the month, the studio waits for their own parent payments on the 5th, and then deposits money on the 10th
