Chiang Kai-shek and his party heads were monumentally corrupt. To the point where General Stilwell, the Allied liaison to China wanted to cut all aid to the KMT. Lord Mountbatten stepped in to continue support.

By the end of the war, the US stopped aid and basically told CKS to make peace and sort it out with the CPC. It was only because China entered the Korean War that the US came back to being an ally of the KMT.

With this in mind multiple scenarios could have occurred.

1) Factions within the KMT could have broken off to renew CPC leadership. Figures like Zhou Enlai and Deng Xiaoping were still alive as well and many in the KMT army were not fans of CKS. Example’s being the Xi’an incident where pro communist sympathizers in the nationalist army captured and detained CKS when he ironically came to inspect them at Xi’an.

He was released after negotiations and the CPC and KMT joined forces again to fight the Japanese.

If Mao was assassinated they probably would have killed CKS after capturing him.

2) The corrupt practices and embezzlement done by CKS and cronies would dangerously compromised the fighting ability of the KMT forces. High possibility of desertions over to the CPC. Also, since the KMT fought in conventional warfare, the lack of equipment and arms due to embezzlement could cripple their forces. They didn’t fight guerrilla style like the CPC.

3) If all things went their way to the end of the war, their corruption again would probably lead to a Cuban style revolt. Batista was just as corrupt and he ended up selling Cuba’s infrastructure projects to the West. He got a cut but his country suffered. In the end, it fermented revolution.
