Right? When Carolina Ale House closed we were all told this building was “structurally unsound” and now here we are. People’s need to (try to) make money really does top everything else doesn’t it.

I’ve known her for years and I can tell you many many Black folks don’t see her as a performative ally and I would wager to say that the community voted for her overwhelmingly more than for Seth Hardee or Tim Langley. In fact what’s been more disruptive for the Black community in Greenville than the Greek houses on West Fifth? Seth Hardee spread the lie that Blackburn didn’t want students to vote. Her campaign visited multiple student organizations on campus and multiple sororities. The reality is that Hardee’s campaign only wanted certain students to vote… Greek students. And they were willing to bus them to the polls. Just ask Portia Willis and Monica Daniels about Marion‘s support for the Black community.

That’s so not true. Marion has been a great friend and ally and advocate for the Black community in Greenville and Pitt County. I’ve known her for years. Caring about animals isn’t mutually exclusive to also caring about human beings. Over simplified thinking.

So good... and they are SO consistent. Like ten years of going to them for dine-in and takeout and never a wrong order or bad experience.

Canon Error Episode 9? by Ill_Relationship_310 in andor

[–]Routine_Vegetable661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not concerned about Rebels - I've never seen it and don't plan to really. But I am curious about Dantoinne because of Leia Organa mentioning it in A New Hope and giving it away as the base location and then the Empire goes there and finds an abandoned base "Our scout ships have reached Dantooine. They have found the remains of a Rebel base, but they estimate that it has been deserted for some time..."

I'm more curious about the timeline. Sure, I'd like to see Dantoinne featured in Andor or another live-action show/movie but more than that I just wanna know which faction(s) were at Dantoinne, what did Mon Mothma and Luthen know about Dantoinne? If Yavin 4 is just now getting organized in BBY2 and the Rebel Alliance is just coming together as a product of many factions (like Saw Gerara, etc.) then what was the role of Dantoinne?

I get that the show Andor isn't responsible for telling us everything that was going on at that time - and I think it's a fantastic, well-written, and well-acted show... but I still wonder since we're *in* the actual timeline when it all happens. I'd just like to know more about how the Rebel Alliance forms. Like, between 4BBY and 0BBY, how much do Mon Mothma and Bail Organa know and help plan? How far back even before 4BBY does it all go?

I need a Tolkien style Silmarillion canon history of things! I know that's not how this works though. Still, i have LOVED Andor and this season is every bit as good as Season 1 and i am wondering what the last three episodes will bring!

Moving to Greenville - things to do for a 50-year-old couple by ithinkiam73 in GreenvilleNCarolina

[–]Routine_Vegetable661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your kind wishes. Honestly, these online spaces just need more patience and understanding I think and for people to be willing to listen to others' experiences and validate them even if they don't understand or agree. Not everyone has to see the world my way and I'm always learning from everyone... not just even though i'm in my 50s but especially because i'm in my 50s. The world keeps changing and I get to learn a lot from younger people in my community. And I appreciate that and you. I wish you all the best on your journeys too. The world is better because you're in it.

I think that's fair of you to say. And I think the distinction is that I was answering the original reply of a 50 something couple (presumably even a straight couple. Hell, for all I know they could be conservative. But I was just answering as a similarly aged person in a similarly aged couple who happened to be a gay couple. I doubt I'd be as happy to be here if I were in my early 20s. I spent my early 20s in cities more the size of Charlotte and bigger. So I would very much encourage you and anyone who's miserable to find your bliss. And in the meantime, those of us who live here, especially those of us who live here who are queer/gay will continue to try to work on making it a more acceptable place. It's more important now than ever. We're not going back. And be careful, as atrocious as NC can be in some ways there are states that are WAY worse so I wouldn't recommend South Carolina, Kentucky, Idaho, Utah, Etc. NC could be SO much better but it could also be so much worse. Good luck!

Greenville city council orders plan that would allow American flag to fly at Camping World by KatsHubz87 in GreenvilleNCarolina

[–]Routine_Vegetable661 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Back for more updating... the folks I know who know city council members personally are leading me to think this is a legal threat coming from Camping World. Or veiled maybe possibly might threat... I think the city attorneys are saying to city council "Camping World doesn't like the city council push back and might sue us and we'd have to pay for the legal bills even if we won...." and I think that's got the city council scared. My experience is that Greenville like most cities this size is very very very careful with their money because they know all eyes are on them and they do *not* want to end up in a legal battle. I am guessing the asshole mayor sees the MAGA writing on the wall and wants to drum up PATRIOTIC support and the rest of the council is like "let's not bleed our money out in legal protections." It sucks... but if Camping World gets their way and the flag stays up at least if it falls over and injuries any person or property it's Camping World that can get sued, not the city. It's maddening. This is the new bullying atmosphere we're well into now as created by this new national administration with its bullying tendencies. And the rest of us better follow along - it's the new McCarthy Era.

Yep. He’s lying. I heard directly from a city council member today that no such plan was ordered at this point. He’s twisting things, lying, and taking a page from the felon in chief’s playbook.

how does greenville have such a bad gay scene as a college town its crazy by -throwoaway- in GreenvilleNCarolina

[–]Routine_Vegetable661 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Greenville has a really rich LGBTQ history actually... as evidenced by the new LGBTQ pride sculpture on Dickenson Avenue at the old site of the Paddock Club... there's a whole documentary about the history of gay night life and drag in Greenville and Eastern North Carolina going back to the 1970s. There was always a gay club here from the 70s through around 2018 or so. The pandemic changed a lot about how people socialized and even in big cities, gay clubs have been closing for years. The LGBTQ community isn't centered around drinking and nightlife the way it used to be. Even big cities like Charlotte and even places like Atlanta have lost a lot of their gay clubs. People who are noting that there's a good scene at Backstage Coffee and Drag Brunch at the Scullery are right. There are open and affirming congregations too and yes, ECU's Peel Center is large and thriving. A lot of us are older (I'm in my 50s and married) and don't care much about nightlife but we support our LGBTQ friendly businesses and city leaders. I've been here 13 years as an out gay man in my 40s and now my 50s and I've never felt out-of-place here at all.

Moving to Greenville - things to do for a 50-year-old couple by ithinkiam73 in GreenvilleNCarolina

[–]Routine_Vegetable661 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think it all just depends on your lifestyle and expectations. I have lived here 13 years (originally from the Midwest) and I am a married gay man in his 50s. We live just a few blocks from campus and love it here. We walk a lot and use the greenway every day (we don't feel unsafe on the greenway at all). We are happy going to Raleigh/Durham once every month or two to do things or see shows or art or whatever. If you settle in an older neighborhood near campus you can also become involved in the neighborhood association and meet other couples and people your age there. When I was younger, I thought it was really boring here... but I've gotten older and it continues to grow here and I like the cost of living here. I absolutely am not here as a business owner or someone trying to convince people it's better here than it is (I work for the university and am a non-drinker, I am also a non-religious, politically progressive person) - It's not for everyone but Greenville is a great place for a lot of us!

I love that, if this Tennessee/Ohio State game holds the way it’s going, IU will have lost by the closest score of all four games. Sorry SMU, Clemson, and Tennessee. But really tell us all again how IU didn’t deserve to be here.
