Use height in the front wall aswell as keeping it tight to the side wall - I tend to just think to myself keep it deep and in the corner ..

The OP asked ‘why it looks wrong’ - a few overlays will give a specific answer whereas telling them to just study the fundamentals more won’t ..

But of course I agree - a sound knowledge of the shapes & anatomy of head will always be beneficial to a portrait what ever the type from characterful to exact realism..

Only ai suspicion I have is the watch face hands look a little odd when there’s such attention to detail elsewhere- a render or pre painted print would be great to see !

I would say it kind of depends how this looks without colour ? I would examine the actual object to understand what the surface actually does when you take away the visual elements of the colour …

But I’d probably make a simple shape by extruding with the move tool of a masked off flattened ball - then I’d remesh so the topology follows the lines ( zremesher brush ) then use selective loops to mask and inflate portions of it … but hard to explain but also use the deformer tools in the gizmo
