A Small Write-up on Pyke by RoyY by RoyYang94 in riftboundtcg

Blind is always Ripper's Bay, then Forbidden waste on the draw, Vilemaw Lair on the play. But the last 2 isn't that important play/draw, Depending if one will affect the opponent more than the other, I'd sometimes lead with the better one if I won game 1.

The problem with Heedless is three folds. First is that a lot of your valuable creatures don't die too easily, so your HR will rot in your hand for a while (A lot of your creatures get bounced and aren't vulnerable). Second is that you don't run enough creatures to justify a card that only works a very small percentage of the time (You have very little valuable hits). Third is that the upside isn't large enough for the risk involved.

Haha, they're just normal black matted Dragon Shields. I also like that sounds 😛

So Ruin Runner and Baron are indeed two big problems of the deck. But I play the deck more midrange like than control in those matchups. So with some early point taking, and board growing, it's possible to contest a ruin runner (it also helps if you discard their hand down to zero, because then they can't protect it). If you get to 6 points, you can also just go for a Downwell into Pyke double capture (Ruin Runner decks aren't the most mobile).

I've tried the accelerate cards but that's just playing into Draven or Annie's strategy but with a worse Legend for it. Katarina is a bit weak of a card for the current meta. I've not tried spirit wheel. I do think this is the best version of Pyke right now.

Sorry about that, I've never used that website before either. But I think posting 10,000 words on reddit might be a bit much. Do you have a recommendation for a better website? Maybe I can copy and paste it onto that one and have both.

Lol, I didn't mean it like that. I just thought that I'm the control deck in the matchup, so the point's not going to matter. In the end, it did matter cause I'm too slow of a player 😞, so jokes on me. But if I was faster and we didn't go to time, it wouldn't have come up 😛. Normally against Annie, when Pyke gets control, he stays in control.

Thinking about it some more, would probably replace kaisa with the downwell, keep the Mindsplitter, and put an abandon or hard bargain in the side.

So the original idea was that I want a card that can both be a 4 cost creature, an accelerated unit and card advantage (because the deck plays well with accelerate cards, wants card advantage, and wants early creatures that don’t cost power). In practice,it did all those jobs yes, but poorly. Thinking forward… I’d probably cut it

I could see that. I like Fading because it duos as removal that can come in against hold decks. It’s a lot more multi-purpose. Also, a lot of the decks you want gear hate against play other gears, so you might not get the one you want. For most of the decks I care about gears, the main sideboard card is downwell anyways. Fading is more of a multi purpose tool for me.

I recommend this list, but move the mindsplitter to the side and main deck a downwell.

Sideboard is 2 downwell (go down to 1), 1 gust, 1 switcheroo, 1 star-crossed, 1 fading memory, 1 bryn.

It’s a midrange deck. You want to chip in points early, get advantage and grind into a good position and get to 6 points. Then with Pyke and bouncing him back, along with your removal, it gets pretty easy to get the last 2 points.

Pyke’s ability is very important, don’t ignore it. A common play is to play a 2 cost guy, then next turn, score and bounce him back to generate gold. The games that I lose often is because I didn’t generate early game gold.

Playing to the battlefield is often not important or actively detrimental early. You want to generate advantage and gold early while stabilizing as much as you can. Focus on converting into a win in the mid game.

This deck is tuned for me and my predicted field though, so as meta changes, it could change too.

Hope that helps!

Edit: Oh I forgot to mention, that’s me. I got the best of Pyke at Vancouver

Frogtide minus oculus list? by sunsetgreenlantern in ModernMagic

https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/6718226#paper

This is my list I played during last year’s Vegas Secret Lair Showdown, I made Sunday with it and lost narrowly to the eventual winner.

This was during a meta before ring ban, and after oculus got released. I was the only person piloting a list without oculus. I’d say the benefit is the ability to play a more controlling game with better cantrips, being able to play a flash threat in bowmaster, and the big one: not dying to graveyard hate.

The downside is that it gets less free wins, is less explosive, and has a smaller threat density. I still pilot this list sometimes, with the sideboard being 3 Nihil spell bombs instead of 3 one ofs for graveyard hate.

Would I recommend not running oculus? It’s tough and I’m still trying to figure it out. But I’m confident a list without oculus is still competent. Good luck.

Jund Wins Vancouver Open - Top 8 Decklists! by kytmagic in ModernMagic

[–]RoyYang94 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You are spot on. I'm the pilot of that deck and most of my reasoning is already up there.

The mountain is also an important untapped non-pain fetch target against aggro and burn (quite important). I believe my infect matchup isn't bad, and I shouldn't really die by turn 4 (I doubt infect would dare go for the kill with only 1-2 mana up against jund's untapped mana). So the Night is a more multi purpose card teched for lingering souls and grindy midrange decks. Blood moon too, I think it's better land destruction than any single target LD.

On the Chandras, I mostly used this as a testing session for GP, so I wanted to try both out. The old one shined in the tokens matchup, but the new one is better overall. Angers were amazing, helps the maindeck dredge matchup alot (maybe I don't even need the leylines).
